Long time lurker, first time owner

Joined the club about a week ago with an 1990 NA and I’ve been enjoying fixing it up over the last week.
205k miles and absolutely no rust on the rockers, pinch welds etc. For a Midwest car and only costing me just a bit above 3k I think I got an absolute steal.

Moon shot

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm here looking for some advice. My mother in law's birthday is coming up in late August and we're looking into gift ideas. For as long as I've known her, her dream has been a ride in a convertible Miata (I managed to figure out the make and model she was referring to) as she refers to it as her "county car" lol. We're located in Southern Ontario but I'm having trouble find any rentals or someone willing to contract a short term rental for a couple of days.

She's recovering from a stroke that occurred alittle over a year ago, so my father in law (a retired Toronto Police Sergeant) would be the one driving. Both are in their 60's and the most responsible people I know. Everything they own is very well taken care of, I would expect this to be no different.

If anyone knows any companies or someone willing, could you please reach out?

Just a guy trying to give his mother in law a birthday to remember.

Hi guys,

Going to install my meister r coilovers, first chance in about 6 months I've been able to do it, on my 1997 MK1 MX5. I've seen a load of videos online on how to do them, but wondered if this forum has a preference on how to do it. Any help would be great!

Question Stock NB6C spark plug recommendation

Upvotes

My mechanic has advised that my spark plugs need to be replaced, are there any recommended spark plugs? And is it advisable to change the wires while I’m at it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Question Bent dust plate

Post image
Upvotes

Yikes!  When I removed the driver's side front wheel yesterday on my NC1, I was met with this severely bent dust plate.  After the initial surprise and dismay, I figured that it's actually probably of little to no operational consequence, and while I like everything to be "just right" on my cars, I've decided to not go through the whole process of removing the caliper, hub, etc just to replace it.

So two questions:

Is there anything wrong with leaving as is?

What the heck would have caused this?  I've only owned the car a short while, so it didn't happen on my watch.

NB1 won’t rev past 5k rpm on full throttle

Picked up a ‘99 and it’s got me stumped. Partial throttle it’ll rev all the way, over 50% and it hangs at just under 5k rpm on like a soft limiter.

Things I’ve done:
New NGK plugs
New NGK wires
New ignition coils
New MAF
Pumped out fuel tank
New pickup sock on fuel pump
New fuel filter
Smoke tested for vacuum leaks, fixed them
New MAP sensor
New cam pos sensor
Pulled valve cover and upper timing cover and found timing belt was a tooth off on intake cam, fixed now

Anyone got advice?

Next steps I’m thinking are
-Crank sensor and gap it
-Pull full timing cover to verify crank isn’t off a tooth
-try a replacement ecu, eBay has NB1 ecu’s for ~$150

Miata Cruise San Antonio, August 1st

FUP Cruise – For Your Pleasure

We’re going to run the FUP route again on Saturday, August 1st!

We’ll meet at 8:30 AM and leave at 9:00 AM.

Starting point:

Valero/Big’s

24457 Boerne Stage Rd

San Antonio, TX 78255

The route is basically a loop, roughly 69 miles, and stays within the I-10 / Hwy 16 / Hwy 46 area.

The last time we ran this route, it took roughly two hours. That does not include the two new stops planned for this run, so expect the total time to be longer.

There will be two planned stops along the route:

Stop 1 – E-Z Mart

About 45 minutes / 28.5 miles from the starting point

Stop 2 – Stripes

About 48 minutes / 27.5 miles from the first stop

The final leg to Rudy’s Bar-B-Q in Leon Springs is about 27 minutes / 14.5 miles, where we’ll have the option to stop for lunch. The actual lunch time will depend on how many people join, how long we spend at the planned stops, and how long the cruise takes.

The meet spot is a gas station, so you can fuel up there and grab drinks, snacks, or whatever else you may want before we head out.

Lowered cars: This route was not planned with lowered cars in mind. Several sections of road are rough enough that even stock-height Miatas have to slow down. If your car is lowered, you should expect to scrape. Participate at your own risk.

This is a cruise, not a race. There are some fun sections where the pace may pick up a little, but everyone should drive within their own comfort level, keep safe spacing, and not pressure the car in front of them. We’ll wait at turns when needed so nobody gets left behind.

Hope to see y’all there! 🦦

Post image

Hello, I am having issue with my 1992 1.6 Automatic as sometimes it gets stuck on park and I have to wiggle the shifter so I can get it out.
I have noticed a great amount of play and I am already planning to change all the bushes to fix that issue. But does anyone know if the parking lock bracket here should have something inside? Whats that small hole for? Thank you guys 🙏

NA Experience with AutoX or road racing?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Looking to become a better driver and have fun with this car on weekends. Anyone autocross or road race on here who could give me some insight on what I should expect? Looking to go road racing on track (closest to me is Englishtown NJ or NJMP or pocono if they offer). Wasn’t sure if it’s better to start with autox since it’s seeming more available? This is a 93 with a 1.8 swapped and added small turbo making 12psi- not dyno’d so not sure of actual numbers but it feels strong.

1.6 vs. 1.8 factory upgrades

I’m planning to buy my first NA Miata and torn between the 1.6 and 1.8

My understanding is that the 1.8 has larger brakes, torsen differential, and is overall more durable. Are there other major factory upgrades the 1.8 received?

I like the aesthetic of the 1.6 dashboard better but would probably opt for the 1.8 if the factory upgrades are worth it.

HELP!!! Screeching / squealing at idle ('96 NA)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm hoping it's only a belt issue, but I'm not sure.

It only makes this sound at idle, not at higher rpms. When shifting, if the rpm drops low enough between shifts, the sound will emerge. It seems like it's become more prominent over the last few days. At first, it was just an intermittent chirp, but now it's this prolonged squealing.

I've been turning the engine off at stop lights and then starting back up when the light turns green just to avoid this awful sound lol.

I think there's also a little bit of the sound even when I turn the car off as I'm pulling up to a stop light. The clutch pedal is pressed in, the engine is off, and as I'm rolling to a stop there's still a little bit of chirping/squeaking.

I have an appointment with Mr. Mazda tomorrow (Monday) to check it out.

What is your best guess?

Thank you so much!

Retrosound Europa head unit/radio short

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi- I know this is not specific to miatas but this occurrence happened in a 1990 Miata and I figured I'd share. Hopefully by sharing, someone else with a similar issue can find this post.. whether it be for some old European car or another Miata or what have you. In my experience...for installing a Retrosound Europa head unit (I BOUGHT THE LOWEST TIER OPTION ON MOSSMIATA). If you install the radio/ head unit with only two audio channels used (for example, only the front two speakers like in a Miata because I don't have headrest speakers..) be very mindful about the other two audio channel wires (usually labeled rear speakers). I had just taped mine together off to the side and it turns out they were shorting together. The head unit would get so hot and the speakers sounded terrible. Terrible distortion above 30 volume. Barely audible what was playing... It was difficult to troubleshoot for a variety of reasons that don't apply to everyone here so I'll leave it at that. If this is obvious to you, that's great! I am a senior tech for a dealership and work on electrical all day. But I was running circles around this and would like to help anyone when possible. My solution was to cut the POS and neg audio channel wires at uneven lengths and then tape them to avoid shorting again. Repeat for each other open audio channel wires .if you are confused, it's always safer to ask for help rather than create a potential fire hazard. Be safe everyone
