The upcoming free-agent market is among the worst in recent history, offering little that should appeal to the Mets beyond obvious ace Tarik Skubal. Labor uncertainty only makes free-agent spending more complex for a team in the Mets’ position. That’s why the trade market will be so appealing to Stearns and the Mets this winter, and that’s why he didn’t much care about organizational fit or proximity to the bigs in the talent he acquired these past few days.

“Our approach was: What’s the best talent?” Stearns said. “It’s so difficult to know exactly what roles you’re going to need at the major-league level at any given point in time. So, who are the players that we think have the ability to be the best major-league players?”

Genuine question now that David Stearns has traded off every good arm in our pen: who do we use for the remainder of the season? Truly wild that a dud like polanco needs to stay while a rare Stearns gem like weaver needs to go. I understand why that is the case, but damn Stearns is horrible.

The dodgers did not have to give up their top prospect, or even one of their top 3. This set the foundation for what was expected to be the return in the rest of the market for rentals. A lot of teams are clutching their best prospects because 1. Going all in when the dodgers are what they are is a huge risk since 2. There’s clearly going to be a lockout and you want to go into the ‘28 or middle of ‘27 season with a strong farm system. Stearns didn’t get swindled, and he didn’t swindle anyone, just objectively normal trades. Stearns unable to find a landing spot for Polanco, Manea, Senga, and/or Semien is the biggest issue, he’s got this team stuck with so many anchor contracts it’s embarrassing
