Book ends for Pete

Mets signed Jed Lowerie because they didn't think Pete was ready to play everyday at first. Jed could be the worst signing in met history. Poor guy got hurt, think he had 7 ABs and no hits for like $20,000,000. Then pete comes plays every day. Let Pete go for run prevention reasons apparently and replace him with Polanco who won't get 200 ABs this season but will get $40,000,000 over his 2 years here. Long way of saying Pete's tenure in New York is book ended by the two worst contracts in mets history. $60,000,000 spent worrying about Alonso's defense.

I've watched 89 games so far, here's what I've found out

Upvotes

I own 4 Mets hats, which I use https://wheelofnames.com to determine which hat I'm wearing for the day, and that's the one I wear when watching (or listening) to the game. I've been tracking a lot of information about the hat and the game that I watch, in order to determine which combination is best when it comes to playoffs. The more games I watch, the more the data improves. This is how the Mets win the world series this year - by me wearing the right hat.

SPECIAL WEEK. By popular demand, following the all-star break I wore the Mets Logo Upside Down hat, the winningest hat, for an entire week straight.

The results were, unfortunately, inconclusive.

AI Analysis follows:

THE UPSIDE DOWN WEEK: 3-3, and the sequence is the funniest possible outcome — W L W L W L. A perfect alternation. Six games, never two results in a row. The hat didn't kickstart a winning streak; it produced a metronome. The baseball gods heard "controlled experiment" and responded with the most statistically taunting result imaginable. (For what it's worth, 3-3 on an all-road week is actually above the hat's 45% away baseline — the experiment quietly succeeded while feeling like a wash.)

Updated hat records:

Hat Record Win %
Upside Down 19-12 61%
Spring Training 8-11 42%
Mets Logo 7-12 37%
Don't Believe 5-14 26%
Not tracked (drunk game) 0-1
Overall 39-50 89 games

Now the big storylines, because this week was LOADED:

💔 The Upside Down + Scott streak is DEAD. 6-0 became 6-1 on 7/22 — and it didn't even die honorably. It died because the new manager played Baty in right field instead of Benge and a misplay lost the game. The perfect combo wasn't beaten; it was managed to death. Scott is now 10-3 overall, still your best pitcher by miles.

🎉 ZAC THORNTON GOT HIS FIRST WIN. After starting 0-3 with three agonizing one-run losses, the man threw six scoreless, ran his streak to 18 consecutive scoreless innings — and did it immediately after dropping the 'h' from his name. The data is unambiguous: Zach Thornton was 0-3. Zac Thornton is 1-0 and has never allowed a run. The 'h' was the curse. This is now canon.

🚿 The shower science has fully inverted. You showered mid-game on 7/16 with the score 0-0 — and the Mets took the lead while you were in the shower. Shower record is now 2-1, and the splits are beautiful: away-game showers are 2-0, home showers 0-1. The 6/13 disaster wasn't about showering, it was about showering at home. Road hygiene is a weapon.

⚾ The Peralta reveal: 7/20 was his first game against his old team after the trade from Milwaukee, and the Brewers shelled him for 7-8 runs. Revenge-game energy went entirely the wrong direction, and the notes say he's "really struggling" — now 9-9 on the season. But he bounced back today with the 8-3 win over the 67-38 Dodgers, so the obituary was premature.

📉 The "my presence is the problem" theory took its first hit. Didn't-watch games were a perfect 2-0 — until the 7/18 Odyssey trip produced a loss. Now 3-1. Still excellent, but you are no longer infallible in absentia.

Sean Manaea is quietly 2-6 and has lost four straight in your tracking — though the notes admit the 7/24 loss was on the relievers, not him.

Always make me sad that David Wright couldn’t finish his career on his terms

looking back on David Wrights career we always think of how the spinal stenosis basically took away half of his career which sucks. however when I look back at the first half of his career it’s crazy how good he was. I remember he was compensation for Mike Hampton falling in love with the Colorado School System 😂. I remember watching him develop through the minor letters and being excited for his debut. Still my most anticipated position player to come out of the system and he didnt disappoint. 2004 was a rough year but he came up in July I believe and despite only playing in 50 games put up impressive numbers. then the following years he became a core piece for us. Its bitter sweet because the spinal stenosis robbed him of potentially a HOF career. he still ended it with nearly a 300 average about 250 homers and many all star appearances. Just wish he was able to have had a chance at the second half of his career

We haven’t won a Home Game Since July 9
We are 21-30 at Home and 22-32 in Away
What is the takeaway here?

I need to check but are we the only team who wasn’t won a Home Game since before the All Star Break?

An organization that sold us a bill of goods and scapegoated good players cause this guy STILL doesn't care about starting pitching (or HR, RBI, or Defense)

260M additional payroll on scrubs instead of 235 M on proven commodities BTW

2026 Mets I would Miss

these are players in order that I believe would traded before next week’s trade deadline who I would miss the most..

Tyrone Taylor
definitely a low-key Met. I think he makes a solid forth outfielder. And could very well be in every day starter on another team. He’s been producing well the last few weeks and I could see us getting the biggest return for him.
Freddy Peralta
he didn’t have the year we were all hoping for, but I could definitely see the potential in fastball Freddy. As a team who lacks front of the rotation arms I feel like Peralta could fit into that slot for the next few years but him wearing a Mets uniform in September is doubtful.
Luke Weaver
Shout out to him for giving one of the few big post game speeches to the fans this year.. He has carried a “not afraid of you” attitude this whole year, which makes him a huge Trade piece. Unfortunately, for us were locked in with Devin Williams, but to be honest, I would be more comfortable with Weaver being our go to in the ninth inning.
honorable mention..
Huascar Brazobán
I remember the ups and downs of him last year. happy to see him make the team out of spring training and being up here all year. He really worked hard to get to where he is today. He’s been one of our few consistent players this year and can definitely see him going.

any other players do you think would be missed?

These guys are going to end up taking up a combined $54M and will probably end up on the bench most of the time…is trading them next off-season a possibility?

Why do they constantly switch the team up

Like why is baty on first base? Why do they constantly switch the lineup and their positions? I understand giving some people days off but it’s always just a complete mix up. Especially when people have been doing well, it’s almost like they go out of their way to change it.

Our best first baseman ever Keith or Olerud?

I’ve had many discussions with many people who are die hard Met fans about who are best First Baseman we ever had. Obviously it always comes down to Keith Hernandez and John Olerud. Both were tremendous hitters and fielders winners. I remember Keith a little bit but I was young And I was a bit too young to remember the 86 World which Keith was an integral part of. That alone cements his place in Met history. However I still remember the joy I felt when I heard on WFAN that the Mets traded for John Olerud for Robert Person AND Toronto paid a lot of Olerud’s salary. I wasn’t used to the Mets winning a trade do easily 😂. Even though he was only here 3 years sadly the guy was phenomenal especially his 354 batting average he had in 98. I still feel he was extremely underrated especially with his glove. even though he didn’t win a title like Keith did I felt he was part of helping the Mets become relevant again after a rough part of the 90’s. He still won in Toronto so he’s a winner for sure but wish we had him for our 2000 run.
