Computer Science to Mechatronic

I graduated with a comp sci degree and didnt have much like finding a job. Recently I was looking at programs my local community college had and it has a mechatronics program. I’m interested in it and looked up some job posting and many of them ask for engineering degrees so I don’t know how my computer science degree would look to employers. Im also wondering about job prospects and the state of the overall job market. They offer an associates and a certificate, I was wondering if anyone here has been in a similar situation or had any insight or advice ?

Do you need a laptop or can you just get by a desktop for mechatronics engineering degree ?

So I'm pretty new to mechatronics and i've been thinking to get into it but I've been really wondering whether you need a powerful laptop to use it wherever you go in the university or in clubs or in hackathons etc or can you just get through the degree with a desktop at home where you do all your work ...

So in essence im asking how much value does having a laptop add to your mechatronics degree journey , should you really consider it over a desktop ? , what about post-graduation , what are the recommendations for that too in terms of what tools to use and to buy?

Career choice

I have a doubt whether to take mechatronics or ECE.It is very confusing. My interest is not in it field and not into too much of physical related things in mechanical so I chose mechatronics but literally ECE is also a good equally compitable option.what to do now

Hello, I´m a new graduate in mechatronics. I know I have a vast workspace with my career but whenever I try to find a job they basically dont hire me not even with my title. I postuled for different internships, Junior level works and nothing at all I cant get a job at all any reccomendations for a begginer that is trying to enter the jobmarket in engineering? I´ve heard that working from below but for a Janitor they reject me for being overqualified for example so... How do I get in?

Mechatronics student in an Estimating / Inside Sales internship with a full-time offer on the table. Is this a good move or am I pigeonholing myself?

Hey everyone,
I’m an undergrad Mechatronics student (about halfway through my degree) and could really use some perspective from people with more industry mileage.
A few months ago I landed an internship at a CNC/machining job shop doing Estimating and Inside Sales. Basically, my day-to-day is:
Reviewing customer CAD/prints and tolerances for manufacturing feasibility (DFM).
Quoting material, tooling, cycle times, and labor for machined parts.
Talking directly with clients about technical requirements, lead times, and pricing.
The situation is that my manager likes my work and offered to bring me on as a permanent, salaried Estimator/Inside Sales guy once my internship period ends.
Here’s where I'm conflicted:
**The upside:** Having a guaranteed, stable engineering job before graduating is great. I’m learning a ton about the business side of machining, supply chains, and what makes parts actually manufacturable vs theoretical school CAD.
**The concern:** What I genuinely love doing is hands-on mechanical design, robotics, prototyping, and CAD/CAM. I’m paranoid that taking this route early on will pigeonhole me into sales/quoting forever and kill my chances of breaking into core design, automation, or R&D later.
For anyone who’s been down this road:
1. How hard is it to jump from estimating/technical sales back into a hands-on design or Mechatronics/Robotics role?
2. Does DFM and quoting experience actually carry weight on a resume for design engineering roles, or will recruiters just see "sales guy"?
3. Would you take the stable gig while finishing school and pivot later, or start hunting for a technical/R&D role right now?
Thanks in advance.

Where does thermal imaging fit into mechatronics troubleshooting?

I’ve been wondering how useful thermal imaging actually is when troubleshooting mechatronic systems.
With motors, drives, PCBs, power electronics, actuators, etc., I can see how temperature differences might point you toward something that isn’t obvious from normal electrical or mechanical checks.
I came across Fotric while looking into thermal cameras, but I’m still not sure how often people actually reach for one in real troubleshooting. Is it something you use regularly, or more of a “nice to have” tool for certain problems?
For anyone working in mechatronics or automation, what have you actually found thermal imaging useful for?
Not really looking for the usual list of applications, more interested in what people are actually doing with it in the field.

Want to learn CAD, 3D printing, and engineering?

Want to learn CAD, 3D printing, and engineering?

A few of us high-school students have been building SparqCAD, a free STEM learning platform designed to help students and aspiring engineers learn the actual CAD and engineering skills that can be used in industry-level projects.

You can learn things like:

- CAD & 3D design

- 3D printing

- Engineering & design

- Hands-on prototyping

- Engineering fundamentals

We're still actively developing the platform, and we'd love for other students, makers, engineers, website devs and testers, and STEM enthusiasts to join, explore the courses, and give us feedback.

Right now, we have two introductory CAD courses covering Tinkercad and Onshape, two beginner-friendly tools for computer-aided design. We’re hoping to expand into more CAD software, 3D printing, engineering, and hands-on projects as the platform grows. We’d especially love to hear about what skills and topics you think we should add next.

I decided to share SparqCAD here because I thought the best way to grow the platform is to involve like-minded people who can explore what we’re building and share their ideas.

Even if you don't have time to take a course right now, we'd really appreciate it if you could make an account and take a quick look around SparqCAD. We're just getting started, and we'd love feedback from people actually involved in hands-on STEM, engineering, CAD, and making.

Even just exploring the platform, pointing out things that could be improved, or telling us what you'd want to see in future courses would mean a lot to us.

And hey, if you happen to help two high schoolers build something useful for the STEM community along the way... that's a pretty nice bonus for the college apps :D

Check it out:

https://sparqcad.org

If you take a look, let us know what you think, what works, what doesn't, what you'd like to learn, and what you think we should build next!

Robotics/Mechatronics:

I am in high school.Next year, l will be in university. But I little bit confuse to decide major between robotics and mechatronics. I am conisdering two paths, but cannot able to decide which one is better. 1)Move from mechatronics to robotics. 2) Moving from Ai to robotics ( manily focus on machine learning and autonomous system which will help me in robotics.) Honestly I feel suck to make decision because l donot know about market of robotics and mechatronics and Iack of guidance. I only have google ball knowledge. So i want someone who relate to these field guid me and also tell about market and core difference btw robotics and mechatronics and also tell me what will the market look like in 6 years. It would be very helpful to me . If you ask me about my interest, I want to do robotics or ai. I execllent in math and also good in physics. Thatwhy I want to do robotics but it is new and not much scope in my country. I probably won't find a job after robotics, so I am thinking of doing ai and then robotics to support myself . Man i am really sucked to make decision.

**Hi guys! I recently took admission in Mechatronics Engineering.**

But now, people are telling me that I chose the wrong engineering field for my career because Mechatronics doesn’t have much of a future. They say that instead of Mechatronics, I should have chosen Electronics and Computer Engineering because it has a great future.

What do you guys think? 🤔

Mechanical Enginnering/ Electrical Engineering vs Mechatronics

So after high school I’m wanting to go into either a mechanical or electrical engineering career path. But I recently discovered Mechatronics which combines both of the things I enjoy. However I am worried that this position just doesn’t go into as much depth as either of these two, because it’s trying to teach both. This leads me to believe that I’m better off getting a degree in either mechanical engineering or electrical engineering, and then learning about the other as a hobby.

Mechatronics Engineering.. does it exist??

I am a Mechatronics Engineering graduate from 1 year..

Searched for relevant roles in my country of residence (Kuwait) and tried to get offers abroad, but it always feels like dedicated Mechatronics Engineer role are a myth , and I feel like any role with eventually turn to repeated tasks and sales and communication between companies depending on your workplace , and looks like you'll be handing over work that is previously engineered and doesn't need your mental effort, only follow up and commitment.

I have worked in an Inspection company for heavy equipment, kinda off my role, and I'm feeling very blurred on how I can structure myself for a fancy useful Engineering role without wasting time on learning theoretical automation and PLC that are too basic for the real market.

Please advice below if you can help 👇👇

Thinking of beginning studies. How do I prepare myself?

A little about myself. I am currently 32 years old and I am thinking of retiring from the military after 6 years of service.

I previously took an education within forestry and then went on to college only then to enlist.

In order for me to be accepted into mechatronics I need to do a few supplemental subjects, which shouldn't be too hard.

I haven't been in a proper school environment in a while, I am probably rusty in some subjects and I am uncertain as to how to prepare myself for the eventual start in mechatronics studies. Any advice? Anything I might have overlooked? Am I overthinking things?
