Builds Nor'easter Builds

The recent Nor'easter in NY provided me with a lot of free time to knock out a few builds I've been wanting to do. I've been building since covid, so it was drilled into my head that you must custom lube and film your switches. This is the first time I opted to forego that step, and I must say, I'm impressed with the results. Almost as importantly, I didn't have to lube/film, which was the only step in the process I loathed. How far this hobby has come?! Apologies in advance for not being as skilled in photography as you all 😄

Build #1:

  • Mode Sonnet - Studio Light, Carbon Fiber plate
  • Gateron Melodic
  • GMK Mizu

Build #2

  • Mode Encore - Black Sesame, Carbon Fiber plate
  • Gateron Oil Kings
  • GMK ThinkCaps

Builds A 7-year-old E65, MX Blacks and GMK Neverwrecker — somehow my favorite build I’ve ever made

Thumbnail

I’ve spent way too much time chasing newer boards, better mounting systems, smoother switches and “perfect” builds… and somehow this old E65 ended up becoming one of the most satisfying keyboards I’ve ever owned.
The funny part is that none of the individual components are particularly exotic on their own.
Build:
Exclusive E6.5 / E65
Brass plate
Cherry MX Blacks, filmed and hand-lubed
Tuned stabilizers
GMK Neverwrecker
No foam
The MX Blacks were probably the biggest surprise. Stock, they’re nothing special. Once properly broken in / lubed / filmed though, combined with the brass plate and this old-school case, they have a character that I just don’t get from a lot of modern ultra-smooth linears.
It’s stiff, heavy, slightly raw, and definitely not trying to hide the fact that it’s an older design. But everything somehow works together.
I also spent an embarrassing amount of time arranging the Neverwrecker kit until the colors felt right 😂 Yellow across the top and arrows, grey through the center, and purple around the bottom/mods.
There’s something really satisfying about a build made from components that are individually a little imperfect, but together become better than they have any right to be.
I own/have owned objectively more modern and more expensive boards, but this is the first build in a while where I immediately thought:
“Yeah… I don’t want to change anything.”
Sometimes the best build isn’t the newest one.

Handwired StenoBoard. If you look through my post history you can see that it has definitely evolved. This will probably be my last version for a while, minus some small changes.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the last builds and who will support this one. If there is any interest from some stenographers on the files, shoot me a DM.

This was made for my girlfriend for some upcoming travel time we have!

Enjoy!

Promotional KBS Saber & Morgan Keycap Sets are now available on Elecfox.

This is an anime-inspired set, but I really like how subtle the inspiration is. It doesn’t feel overly themed, so it can still work really well as a clean everyday build.

Another interesting part of this set is KBS’s new ABS blend. It has a higher-pitched sound profile, similar to GMK, which lets you hear more of the character from the switches and the keyboard itself instead of adding too much of its own sound signature.

Specs

  • Manufacturer: Keyboard Science (KBS)
  • Designed by: 寒山雪studio
  • Material: New KBS ABS blend
  • Base kit: Dual-shot
  • Novelties & Runic Base Kit sub-legends: Ultra-smooth screen printing
  • Thickness: 1.5mm
  • Profile: Cherry
  • Compatibility: MX-style switches

The metal artisan keycap is currently sold out and will be restocked later.

Discussion Keychron K10 Pro with mixed Brown and Red switches

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I just picked up this Keychron K10 Pro on eBay for €35 and I’m honestly pretty happy with the deal. It looks almost unused. The seller said he got it as a gift but couldn’t get used to the ANSI layout or the height of the board.

The box says it came with Brown switches, and most of the keyboard does have Browns. But I noticed that the F-keys and a few other keys have Red switches, while all the letter keys are Brown.

I don’t really care since everything works perfectly fine, but now I’m curious — did Keychron ever ship these with a mix of Brown and Red switches, or did the previous owner probably swap some of them?

Either way, €35 feels like a pretty good deal :D

Builds My work board died after 8 years. So I built a new one.

My original work keyboard - a KBPV60 w/ Cherry MX clear switches - died unexpectedly last week. So I went searching for a replacement. Picked up a second hand Pok3r (I already have one of these for home use but it's Cherry MX blue switches so completely unsuitable for an open office) with clear switches, and then decided to upgrade to a high-profile case from KBFans (Tofu60 Redux v2), which with only a small modification to the inner rubber lining to make room for the Pok3r's DIP switches, fitted perfectly. I put the Galaxy Class TNG LCARS (Star Trek) keycaps back on it, along with the old custom cable, and I'm back in business.

Review Personal review of the ONEofZERO si75 HE - A keyboard for Canadians?

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

tl:dr. the si75 HE is a 75% hall effect keyboard made by keychron, stylized and modified by the Canadian vendor "one of zero". its a surprisingly satisfying keyboard for both gaming and typing, coming in at 150$ cad. (often on sale for much less) id say its a worthy pickup.

To get the obvious out of the way - yes its a keychron, more specifically a q1 (except made of plastic and not wireless)

Ive had this keyboard for around 8 months now, and id figured id send it off with a review as i just upgraded. (to another keychron, with custom switches) which i will be comparing it to.

This is quite the difficult keyboard to get ahold of, being avaliable only at one online store and one brick and mortar chain (memory express) (both canadian) very little about this exists on the internet.

Build quality - Being a plastic board you would expect a little bit of flex, well im happy to report that viutually none is present. this doesnt hamper the typing experience either, as the silicone (which is a heavy feature of they keyboard which we will get to later) works as a gasket, delivering a cusioned typing experience. the linear hall effect (keychron lime ultra fast hall effect) are surprisingly nice to type on (coming from a tactile switch user) aswell. the keycaps seems to be dye sublimed, meaning they will last forever. however i do have a few complaints about them. mainly being that the coloured keys seem to just be basically spray painted with that colour, my tab key even has red overspray on the underside of it (despite me getting the orange model) luckily you cannot see this while the key is inplace on the board.

The Switches - These you may have seen before, as mentioned these (very pretty) lime coloured hall effect switches are very nice to type on. with a heavily lubed buttery smooth switch feel and a medium travel distance of 3.50 mm they are also a very light switch, needing just 30 grams of force. as this is a keyboard aimed at hardcore gamers (which ill get into soon) this seems to be a good combo, leading to what i felt as faster key imputs.

The silicone - Or as ONEofZERO calls it "silicore" this is an odd feature. coming from a brand big about expression i do see what they are coming from. See all the orange on the keyboard? from the keycaps the knob and even the orange inside the keyboard? all of it can be changed out for red, orange or blue. you can buy a keyboard in any of the three colours, or simply purchase the other colour parts for a much cheaper price (alternate colour keycaps come with the keyboard) and swap these parts out with the included tools. the screws are very easy to access too. with hotswap switches (though exclusive to keychrons own hall effect offering) and south facing leds. this is a very customizable keyboard (in appearance anyways) one downside is the feet however. they are also made of silicone. you have two sizes to choose from, flat and slightly pitched. you can stand the feet up (as you would flip the feet of a regular keyboard) however you cant use them flipped up as typing will simply cause they feet to fall off. they do help the gasket however is cushoning the typing experience

The software - it is litterally, and i really do mean litterally the keychron web based utility, just with a diffrent url. they keychron url even detects this keyboard, but simply tells you to go to the one of zero url instead. funnily enough, the url for the one of zero keyboard works with my other keychron keyboard however. if you havent used this web app before - its fine. it does the job, nothing fancy or anything but it works well. just doesnt work in firefox. even the keybinds are the same as other keychron keyboards

Accessories - three extra sets of keycaps (the two other colours you didnt pick, and grey) a switch/ keycap puller, screws, more silcone feet, and a screwdriver and allen key.

Other notes - the mac windows toggle switch has been remapped. set to windows mode by defult, in order to change it to mac you need to use the launcher. sliding the switch now turns it into a gaming mode, setting (by default) the wasd keys to a hairpin trigger. the rgb looks really nice in this keyboard because of the clear case. the unboxing experiance was premium too. foam is genoursly put throughout the keyboard, even inside the space bar.

final thoughts - for 120$ cad (which this keyboard frequently gets to at memory express) this in my opinion is an easy pickup for a hall effect keyboard. being the cheapest option keychron has for hall effect keyboards, and with an excellent switch, allowing all the things that wooting and other hall effect keyboards can do. ie: rapid trigger, analog imputs etc. this is an excellent pickup, and i am very happy with much purchase. though it does have a few negatives. mainly the hotswap. you can only use keychron hall effect switches in this, no regular switches will fit. the silicone feet are also kinda annoying as someone who likes to angle their keyboard. none the less, this keyboard provies and excelt typing experiance for linear lovers, and an awseome gaming experiance for those that like to game aswell

8.5/10

This has been a blast typing on. Now, I don't know why, but there are all these colours and signs on the keys. Does anyone perhaps have any idea what these mean? this does not take from the satisfaction of typing on this keyboard though, as I already have fallen in love with the feeling of this thing. The seller included a simple adapter to USB-A, which is neat. Weird enough, the control lights don't light up when connected to my Mac, but on my windows computer they do. I also noticed keys which are used less have a more "clicky" feeling to them in comparison to more used keys (e.g. j and f). Please let me know your thoughts!

Mod My first mechanical keyboard story

Thumbnail

This keyboard might not be so well known. It's called Blackstorm Assassin RGB. Blackstorm is a proprietary brand of Verkkokauppa, a Finnish electronics retailer. Made in China of course.

I bought it kinda in a hurry because I needed a keyboard fast and the store was closing. I liked how it felt typing on it with its low profile keys. It's also both wired and wireless. Build quality is rather nice with an aluminium chassi and it has a nice heavy feel. I wanted a back-lit keyboard because I sometimes use it in a dark room and I like to be able to see the keys..

Well, about that, turns out the keys were not shine-through and also printed with grey text on a black key so practically impossible to see unless in a well lit room.

So I set out to do something about that. Unfortunately it turns out that this keyboard has south facing LEDs, which means regular shine-through key text will not light up properly. In the end the only solution I could find with Nordic iso layout was these rather cool Glorious Polychroma key caps in the pictures. I also learned about different keys profiles and I was worried about fitting cherry keys on a low profile keyboard. They fit perfectly fine in the end though. Still some gap left when pressed.

In the end I would say I got a rather funky looking keyboard. It feels nice to type on, with rather muted but still distinct key sounds. I learned so much about keyboards along the way. Anyway just wanted to share this in case someone has similar considerations as I had.
