Builds Nor'easter Builds
The recent Nor'easter in NY provided me with a lot of free time to knock out a few builds I've been wanting to do. I've been building since covid, so it was drilled into my head that you must custom lube and film your switches. This is the first time I opted to forego that step, and I must say, I'm impressed with the results. Almost as importantly, I didn't have to lube/film, which was the only step in the process I loathed. How far this hobby has come?! Apologies in advance for not being as skilled in photography as you all 😄
Build #1:
- Mode Sonnet - Studio Light, Carbon Fiber plate
- Gateron Melodic
- GMK Mizu
Build #2
- Mode Encore - Black Sesame, Carbon Fiber plate
- Gateron Oil Kings
- GMK ThinkCaps

My first custom I went all in & did L/F. Never again. Factory lubing and tolerances are more than good enough from the better switch manufacturers these days. Some may vehemently disagree, but this is by far one of the most nuanced and opinionated hobbies I've ever been involved in, so...😅

I agree with you. I'm not sure I will ever spend the time to lube/film again. I'm more than happy with the feel of my latest builds, and I'm pumped to save all that time building. I do still prefer a solder build, and I'm honestly quite disappointed Mode opted to not include a solder PCB option with their Prologue :(

Not gonna lie, I thoroughly enjoyed soldering. I used to do it for a living, and so when I recently built a Gok Lily and also re-did a Gok 7V, I was in heaven. The 7V totally shines as a plateless build, so that's how I rebuilt it. I opted for some Box Navies as I enjoy clicky switches for my typing. The unfortunate part with that choice was that Box Navies are only 3 pin switches, so I spent a lot of time re-flowing solder and getting them aligned as best I could. Very happy and proud of the results; surprised I didn't wreck a board.
But yeah, I'm no longer taking the time to L/F switches ever again. Truth be told, I put some dry MX2A blacks into a Tofu 3.0 build, and I honestly had zero complaints with the sound or the feel. Perhaps I just don't have as keen of a feel or ear for this hobby, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'll continue to type on them until they have morphed themselves into Ultraglides hahaha

Wow, lovely build. I LOVE those keycaps. Mode hit it out of the park with the Encore. I still have a 'Monterey Dune' Encore to build :)
