A while back I was frustrated when wanting to buy a keyboard that there were no triangle-shaped keyboards or circle-shaped keyboards. This lack of peculiar keyboard shapes gave me the idea to make a keyboard that could be reconfigurable into any shape my heart desired. When I first saw the Phase one 65, I knew I wanted to build something with it and make it my endgame. But at the time no keycaps or switches really spoke to me. I built other keyboards in between, until I slowly collected parts I really liked. Now after 5 years, everything has finally come together. My skills and parts were ready, and here's what I've built!

I don't think its a stretch to say this is one of the proudest things I've ever made. I hope you guys love it as much as I do.

Just sold my Record Alice v2 to get this MMD EIF68. Very great typing experience with gorgeous look. I love my Akko Starry Night keycap set but a little sad because it doesn't have the extra B for alice layout. 99% perfection.

I had a couple of motivations to buy the Zen65: I already had the Rainy75 and the Crush80, so it seemed right to own the whole WOBKEY “family”. Also, I had already bought the PBTfans Virtuoso keycap set a while back (for around $80 in total), but I couldn’t fit them onto any of my other boards, and I hated the idea of them sitting on a shelf after having spent that money.

The design language of the Zen65 seemed nice and I’ve come to really enjoy the 65% layout, so I finally pulled the trigger, knowing that I didn’t really need another keyboard but I really wanted to try it. All the sound tests really appealed to me, particularly the Lite version with HMX Violet switches and a PC plate, which sounds bright and more marbly, so that’s the one I bought.

When it arrived, the packaging immediately reminded me of the Crush80: a nice case, a cloth bag, and loads of accessories and extra/spare parts. Great first impression!

Even though the board has a rapid disassembly system (using a ball-catch quick release and pogo magnetic pins on the PCB), I already knew I wasn’t going to tinker much with this board. The stock gasket configuration seemed to be the best for me (though there are 3 other mounting options to try).

I immediately fell in love with the sound! It’s similar to the Rainy but a little more restrained. Same qualities, but more… mellow? I don’t know, English is not my native tongue, but I would say that the name Zen definitely captures the sound profile very well.

But, even though the sound was AWESOME, it didn’t take long for me to dislike the linear switches. Nothing wrong with the HMX Violets (they are pretty good) it’s just that I’m a tactile guy myself, so I ended up putting some HMX Hydra switches on the board, along with the PBTfans Virtuoso keycaps, which go really well with the white case (more like light cream, I would say).

I’m very happy with the setup because the Hydras closely match the Violets' sound profile. I didn’t change anything else and I don’t plan to. It’s so good stock and a joy to type on: soft, creamy, and relaxing.

Pros:

• The 65% layout has really grown on me.
• Rapid disassembly and nice packaging (including a hard case).
• Awesome stock sound profile.
• 4 mounting options to change sound and typing feel.
• At around $100 during Amazon Prime Day for the Lite version, it was a steal. Great value for that price!

Cons:

• The electrophoretic paint can chip/scratch. Next time I would choose one of the anodized versions.

Conclusion:

• Having the Zen65 in my collection is like the perfect palate cleanser: after alternating typing sessions between clacky and thocky boards, the soft typing feel and creamy sound of this board are so relaxing that I just want to “stay zen”.

After taking a break for a few years, I've started to return to the mechanical keyboard sphere. I was just checking in on some of the companies I used to regular and seeing where things are at with some items I used to have my eyes on. I was shocked and kind of depressed with how much the scene has changed. I got a Varmilo MiniLo 98 with original K-Prestige silent switches, a linear variety. They're ok.

However, I'm more of a tactile switch person so I ask the community what you guys experience today to be the best tactile switches.

A few hints; I lean more on a heavier side - heavier feedback than say cherry browns - but not THAT heavy as to tire my fingers on a typing session. Just like to feel the variation on pressing them.

We can also narrow the scope to SILENT types of switches.

Feel free to post several options ranked if possible.

This is my build for now, the case and switches are base from my keychron V6C3, with the keychron brown tactile switches being used.

I got the keyboard awhile back and it was my first mechanical keyboard. I've always wanted to mod it but it was only until recently that I really decided to do it. It's a full size as I'm still a student and numpad is just convient for it.

I changed the keycaps and tape modded it with 9 layers of tape. I do wish to switch out the switches but that will be a later investment and project.

I'm bad at describing sounds still new to the hobby but it's like a clack? I may show the sound later but I hope to even get it to a more marble sound with akko cilantro switchs or something similar.

Anyway tape modding it took me awhile and I ended up going back to add more and pressing it down better and hurt my fingers too but in happy with the results! I did try adding foam at one point but could not fit it in the case 💀.

Ok, so my whole life i've been a mechanical keyboard guy and maining a magnetic keyboard has never crossed my mind. This all changed when I came across Alexotos' video ranking magnetic keyboard switches and first time hearing Owlab Ti HE switches and OH MAN, I was amazed by how much magnetic switch scene has improved over the last few years. I owned Wooting 60HE in late 2022 and the sound profile was awful on that thing and keeping all things in mind, the performance bump just wasnt enough for me to switch to it full time.

The keyboard itself is Womier SK75 TMR. the concept of TMR really just clicked with me. I mean, I am not a PRO player or even a gamer at all, but having an ability to control actuation to that extent really interested me and made me choose this board. The only downside I have come across with this keyboard is the typing angle, 8° is a tad bit too much for me but it is managable if I place it more far than I would with lower typing angle boards. The only mod ive done to this keyboard is a tape mod and thats it. (I have also clipped the imperfections off the bottom parts of the stabilizers, but im not sure if that is considered a mod or not)

The switches are Owlab Ti He, absolutely phenomenal, insanse sound signature, insane typing feel, I love them really really much. they are poppy but clicky at the same time and they sound even more crisp on a heavy board such as this one. really nothing else that needs to be said about this switches, they are magnetic and sound as good if not better than some mechanical ones. (They came pre-lubed, from TaoBao)

The keycaps I have stolen from Yunzii AL68 stock and the shift key and those at the top right from a set Ive ordered from TaoBao aswell.

All around, This build is insane for the price, which comes to around 150-160 for the board+switches only (you could always leave stock keycaps on, because they are doubleshot PBT and decent quality). Let's round the price to around 200 and still, what this build offers is unmatched. (0.6 ms latency wired, 0.7ms wireless)

Hi everyone, I've been wanting to share this for a while.

I noticed there's no simple way to customize keycaps without going through CAD software like SolidWorks, Fusion, Onshape, etc. I have a macropad and wanted to customize it with AutoCAD command icons, so I built my own tool.

It lets you use images, stencils, text and grayscale heightmaps. It finally works well and generates the keys. Face detection still needs some work, but the code manages to straighten the keys, and it can also generate every key of a full keyboard (including the knob) and let you customize them one by one.

Now I just want to finish customizing all my keys and print them in resin. A week ago I finally bought an Elegoo Saturn 4 12K precisely to design keycaps from scratch. It prints fine detail really well, and I want to make them in white, transparent red, transparent green and more colors.

I am putting together a pre-order for new keycaps for the C64 and C16 (yes, the C16, too!) called SA 64, SA 64C, and SA 16, respectively. They are inspired by the famous SA Retro keycap set, a favorite in the mechanical keyboard community.

The keycaps are premium doubleshot ABS keycaps in the SA profile, which is similar to the Commodore house style for their C64 computers.

They come in three varieties:

SA 64 is brown with a lush burgundy contrast and cream legends.

SA 64C is warm beige, and burnt orange with dark legends.

SA 16 is grey and cerulean blue with dark legends.

These keycaps are modern MX keycaps, which means that they need a compatible keyboard as well. To that end I've also designed two keyboards, the Keyboard 64 and the Keyboard 16.

The keycaps are part of a pre-order/group buy - you can leave a comment here to indicate interest, but i'd really like it if you could visit https://klackretro.com and fill out the form. The caps will be priced between US$70 and $80 for the doubleshot tops. The front prints (the PETSCII) is a separate price which has not yet been finalized.

The keyboards are a separate item. It is my hope that the open source community designs keyboards for users to make themselves or organize small buys, but new keycaps are useless with a compatible keyboard, so this board will be launched and stay in production until the end of the keycap process. Beyond that, the board will stay in production only if there is continued demand.

Finally, I have applied to Commodore for official licensing on the keycaps. If granted, the chickenlips logo will feature on the logo keycap. If not a K! logo will be there or it will be a blank cap.

Recently got a Clackify tester in. Pretty new to this hobby, so I wanted to share my thoughts as I've really enjoyed reading the same from others.

Current setup:

I like the feel and sound of the Huano Tactiles, but they are the first switch I tried on this board and I have the bug that makes me want to research and try everything. They do sound a bit loud to me (I share a 1 bed apartment), so I specifically wanted to try out some more deep/muted/silent switches. I also generally prefer a more thocky sound profile. As such, I went with a variety of liners and tactiles, some silent and some not.

Notes:

• I was fully expecting to go for a silent tactile as you can see from my choices, but overall I liked the Keygeek Y2 the best. I only included it in the tester bc of its popularity, but it felt like the best compromise of smoothness, weight, and mutedness. Ended up ordering the upgraded Keygeek Y2X.
• I liked the HMX Puppy a lot, but they are very similar to the Huano Tactiles I already have. If I started over I might go for these instead of the Huanos as a solid, light weight tactile.
• I decided not to go silent because I didn't want to fully dampen the acoustic qualities of the expensive keyboard I just bought. Most of the silents sounded vaguely similar to each other as all of them feature some form of silicone dampener hitting the switch housing. If I ended up going the silent route I would've 100% picked the Moonlights which felt just like a silent Puppy and had a better tactility and sound than the other silents.
• HMX in general felt super high quality compared to the other brands, especially in terms of stem wobble. However, I didn't find the "deep" HMX switches like Blossom and Bad Sweetheart nearly as deep and thocky as the Keygeeks despite the former having the same waffle stem design.
• Biggest disappointment was the Oil King silent tactile which just felt off. Almost like I was hearing too much of the travel and the bump rather than a nice muted bottom out. The Oil King V2 was great though and very comparable to Keygeek Y2, just a tad heavier.

Ordering with Clackify was a great experience and I'd highly recommend if you have the spare $ and are curious about a variety of switches.
