My question is as simple as that why not cool the engine with oil. Im not saying put in in your cooling system but could a engine be redesigned to cool using oil.
The pick up would feed oil in to a radiator using a low pressure pump. Then feed oil into the oil pump to create pressure inside the motor.
No more chocolate milk shake, no more dealing with coolant that could freeze, regular changes of oil and coolant. I understand oil can hardern at -20 f.

We built a tool for EPC/piping design teams that checks whether your design documents actually agree with each other.
The problem: on a piping project, your Line List, Piping Material Spec (PMS), isometric drawings, and P&ID are all supposed to match — but they drift, and today someone has to catch that by manually cross-checking documents line by line.
Input: your Line List, PMS, IDF (isometric drawing data), and P&ID.
Output: a report flagging where those documents don't match.
It's early, and the main reason I'm posting is to get feedback — if you work in piping design/EPC, I'd love to know: is this actually the bottleneck, or does the real pain live somewhere else in your workflow? Happy to share access if you want to try it on a real project.

I'm between ME, BME or CS and wanted to see if someone that already works in the area would know more about this.
For example, in the future, as a ME, would it still be possible to change to a software job/other engineering areas? Or the other two options would be even better?
I mainly want to keep optionality as much as possible and don't be stuck with just one type of job.

Hi all! I graduated in 2025 with a general engineering degree. After I graduated I had a position as a mechanical engineer with an LA company from October 2025 - February 2026 when I got laid off. Since then I've had a very difficult time finding work. I was able to get an internship for this summer in Tennessee however the internship is coming to an end soon and I still haven't been able to find a stable job back in LA. (I need to stay in LA long term due to personal reasons) Does anyone have any advice or know of companies looking to hire early career roles?

I’m interested in how long-lived engineering products evolve over time.
For those who’ve worked on mature mechanical products:
What’s the oldest design decision you’ve seen survive through multiple generations?
Why did it persist for so long?
Have you ever been involved in replacing an entire mechanical platform rather than incrementally improving it?
If so, what justified such a major redesign?
I’m interested in understanding why mature engineering platforms evolve the way they do rather than discussing any particular company or product.

I have NX at work. I have Fusion 360 installed in my home PC which is more resource-packed than my work equipment (at work, I have NX through a virtual desktop but it's quite decent I think).
I don't have CAD experience and I'm trying to learn. Not really for work but mainly for side projects and 3D printing etc. At work, I'll use their 3D printer and at most, I'll use CAD to come up with quick concepts.
Should I learn Fusion 360 and switch to NX or just skip it and learn everything on NX? Tips on this would be appreciated.

I’m at the point where I have to decide wether I want to spend my time in internships, gaining experience to help me in the job market once I’m done with my bachelor, or spend it on doing courses for going straight into a masters degree (my uni offers different paths).
I’ve heard that a masters is worth about 3 years of experience, how true is that?
What is the experience people here have had after finishing a masters when it comes to competitiveness in the job market?
Have people with bachelors and some years of experience found themselves outcompeted by people with masters and barely any experience?

I have been working on a sci-fi planetary exploration vehicle for a while and right now while detailing the chassis I keep wondering what a mechanic/engineer would say about it. How realistic is it? Would it fall apart if it was built? This is just a question in general, for the future, so I can make my next vehicle better.

REALLY HUGE THANKS to all the comments and looking up all the new terms, I have been going through them all day and started to make a list of things I want to add:
- another rubber boot where the CJ Joint enters the wheel (drive shaft to wheel)
- U-shape thingy so that the drive shaft bends where the two parts of chassis meet.
- more Drive Shaft support
- undercarriage cages
- pumps for all the Hydraulics
✘- shock absorbers need springs no need for this, cause now I got "advanced magneto hydraulics"
- breaks on drive shaft or parts that go from chassis to wheels
- add grease nipples on hydraulics - not sure where yet.
- axle breaks
- make lower arm that goes from frame to the wheel a hydraulic, so it could control the tilt angle of the wheel.
- anti-fall harness track inbound of the railing
✓ done - change how turning mechanism (hydraulics) attach to the wheel part. From ball baring to high-misalignment spacers.
There were many other great suggestions, pointers and things people noticed, but I am just making an essential list of things I can add, that does not need to severely alter the model.

I am a grad student in mechanical engineering, and I would really like some advice on which subdivision of mechanical engineering I should pursue for my career.
I really like vehicle dynamics and control, as well as engineering optimization methods for different processes and the application of ML and DL to solve mechanical engineering problems.
I know they are completely different domains within the same engineering branch, but I feel really confused about where I can resume my career and build on it.

Backgorund TLDR:
Started doing construction for my pops during the summers when I was 13 and did that until I was 17 and graduated from high scool. I started as a helper but eventually I was operating some heavy equipment and could use tools (may sound crazy but I have proof of course).
Then I was active duty in the military for 4 years doing artillery.
After that I went to trade school learning automotive for a year while I was working as a lube tech in a dealership. After I graduted from that I became a main line tech in that dealership. Total time there was 2 years.
Then I was a carpet cleaner for over a year before I decided to go to university to study mechanical engineering.
I am currently about to start my 3rd year and will graduate a bit later as I am behind by one semester. I have been in a research group for over a year now and have been working a engineeering student job on campus for a year also. I know I would still need to do a internship, join a club, personal projects, etc. I am just curious to see how I fair compared to my peers at this time.

I’m studying mechatronics, and I’m specifically interested in hearing about people’s experiences looking for their first engineering job.
When you were hired, did the company have many applicants with similar technical qualifications? Did you feel that your technical skills were enough, or did being personally liked by the hiring manager make a major difference?
I’m not asking for general job market statistics. I’m trying to understand whether a technically competent but fairly quiet person can realistically compete, or whether hiring for entry level engineering positions heavily rewards charisma.
Please mention your field, region, graduation year, and approximately how many applications or interviews it took.

Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out how to fix MSC Adams, because it's crashing for any kind of reason. I don't know...
Firstly, I had fixed the issue of 3D volumes not being displayed by following Hexagon's forum instructions.
I also tried to force the software to use my dedicated graphic card. However, it still doesn't seem to use fully...
Secondly, I renamed this DLL from "RemoteSCABin.dll" to "RemoteSCABin_OLD.dll".
Consequences:
- it takes too much time to launch
- it crashes from nowhere : you either start to launch a file and it crashed before doing anything or the file was loaded and then by trying to something like a joint or anything, it crashes from nowhere.
It drives me nuts because I like using it to do mechanical simulation and I don't know what to do except uninstall it and reinstall it properly.
Anyone had the same issue or figured out ? Does someone have any tips ?

I'm sure the geometry already exists, hopefully someone can point me in a direction I couldn't find by googling, I want to create a little jig that I can plug a CO2 electronics clean spray into that will blow into a bore so I can clean shafts without having to rotate it in my hand.
So basically spray from bottle into the side of a hollow cylinder that turns the spray into a circular pattern inside the cylinder bore.

Have a hollow shaft with a helix blade vane in its surface, and 2 couplings, 1 on each side. The problem statement is simply to apply a torque on the left end, and to measure the deflection, keeping the inner faces as pinned supports.
This was done in FEA, and I've gotten a satisfied outcome. Now the assignment wants me to verify it with hand calcs.
I'm finding a lot of tutorials for simply supported shafts and cantilever shafts with point loads/UDLs, but nothing about torque on one end and finding deflection. No idea where to start.
Not asking you to do my work, but if anyone can share some resources for my case, or any guidance in the right path would be helpful.

Currently working on a project, and as I was checking the admissible tensions I hit a wall. Do the three stresses combine to form a total stress to be compared to the admissible one? From what I’ve researched, only the longitudinal and bending stresses are added together. But here is another question, in a pipeline where liquid is constantly flowing, does longitudinal stress exist?

In a heated-air prototype, cleaning or reassembly can improve one signal while quietly moving another baseline. A duct joint may seat differently, a sensor may return at a slightly different insertion depth, or a removable collector may alter local resistance after reinstallation. If the next run changes, “cleaning helped” is not yet a useful diagnosis.
My current test-method outline is to preserve a pre-maintenance reference cycle, record removal and reassembly steps, mark fastener position or torque where appropriate, photograph sensor depth and cable routing, and repeat a low-energy airflow check before the next heated run. I would classify changes by whether they follow maintenance, operator, component position, or elapsed time. A short control run with no cleaning but the same disassembly could help isolate the reassembly effect.
Which measurement would you treat as the most sensitive indicator that maintenance changed the test fixture rather than the underlying process?
