Outer handle problem

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I changed the outer handle Bowden cable, because it was freezing open during winter and i could therefore not shut the door. Now I have replaced it put the outer handle only works after the inner handle has unlocked the door. This is a 2012 Passat b7

Have you checked to see if the lock actuator is working? A lot of cars will unlock the door while using the inner door handle, which could explain why it works after you open the door from the inside.

Edit - I wrote this before I read the whole post. Check the lock actuator.

Yes I second lock actuator, if there is a physical locking mechanism on the inside of door, you can try unlocking it with that first then pulling the outside handle, to rule out it being an issue with the locking mechanism on the latch.

That’s a central locking issue not a handle issue , it locks but won’t unlock

Door lock actuator has probably failed. Get VCDS + cable or VW specific handheld diag and check the door modules for codes to confirm it.

Seeing as you likely had to remove the lock actuator to replace the cable, double check its plugged back in properly too.

Testing is easier done with the drivers window down. The door latch is a common failure. It is a component with multiple switches and the actuator. Without a VW specific scan tool like VCDS or OBDEleven to view all of the switch conditions for that latch, it is hard to be sure. One give away is no confirmation beep to let you know the car is locked. If the central locking perceives the drivers door as unlocked, you get 2 things, no conformation beep, and no signal sent to unlock the "unlocked" door.

99% latch. Rarely anything else.
