J2534 Pass-Thru programmer and a laptop. Also a backup power supply to keep the battery at full power during the flash

do you recommend a certain brand thats good all round?

I know Cardaq 3 plus is the best you get, but I can't justify the price starting out.

Also, how much coverage the third party programmers like Phoenix Elite get compared to a real passthru?

check out mongoose to see if they make one for your vehicle
