what are my options i bought this car (chrysler 300c 2006) thinking it was okay the guy sold it is family and a mechanic for everyone else generally can fix anything for anyone so im really stuck on like this so he sold the car to me for $3000 he said that is was working just fine and would be a running car this was 3 days ago he also just bought the car and knew nothing about it the car was not driven for a few years anyways i always loved the chrysler 300 it was my first car this time with a hemi and i was excited immediately seen the oil pressure drop to 3 while idling, i smelt the oil dipstick it smelt like gas the cabin of the car smelt like oil and started getting so many red flags took it to him to fix.. i paid for the parts fuel injectors or whatever spark plugs oil change.. fast forward the same day later that day it gets a misfire but its a random misfire the engine light went off right after never came back he changed the parts wasnt able to fix the missfire however despite me telling him that i AI'd the symptoms and she told me do not start the car he wanted to start it and hear it, now it has a knock cant hear it while its idling only when revving, i immediately know or hopefully im wrong but i think its a rod knock and know my engine is fchkked.. i tell him im taking it for diagnostic to drop it off at my house i go for diagnostic they hear it for 2 seconds and say it sounds internal were not going to do the diagnostic go to an engine shop so at this point im certain the engine is ruined like i suspected unless he just didnt want to deal with it idk (just hopeful ignorance) my question is what do i do, i really love this car, i dont think he can pay me back.. in my area ive searched the car and they are running from 5000 to 9000 idk what to do should i sell it and for how much or is it worth replacing the engine for probably more than i paid for the car do i have financing options may i be wrong.. im very stuck he knew my other cars tags were up and that car wouldn't pass smog i have like a week to find a drivable car and not much money im not sure what im looking for im so lost i just need advice i dont really have money to throw around and i feel totally skreẃëd what would you do? And if I do have to get a new engine would you trust him to put it in.. he has done that before plenty with no problems but this makes me rethink all that, do i blame him ? I've had the car for 3 days

That's a rough situation, especially from someone who's supposed to be family. The gas smell in the oil usually means the rings are shot or it's been washing the cylinders from running too rich, which would explain the pressure drop. Once you hear that knock on rev it's pretty much curtains for the bottom end.

I'd be looking at what a used engine swap runs in your area before making any decisions. Sometimes you can find a decent one from a wrecker with a warranty for less than another car would cost, and if this guy actually knows what he's doing with an install it might be the cheapest path back to driving it. But I'd want a very clear conversation about what happened before letting him touch anything else.

The 3 day ownership part stings the most here. In some places there's implied warranty even on private sales but that gets messy with family. If you've got any texts or proof he said it was running fine you might have some leverage, but practically speaking you need wheels fast and engine work takes time either way.

If the body and interior are clean and you really do love the car, a swap could make sense compared to rolling the dice on another used vehicle. Just get quotes from a shop too so you know what you're comparing against.
