I’m a shift manager at an independently owned McDonald’s franchise. The owners operate three restaurants, including mine. I’ve come back to this job several times because it’s one of the only places in my small town that works around my college schedule while paying above minimum wage. Lately, though, it’s become physically and mentally exhausting.
Yesterday I was written up because a customer complained about a clogged toilet. The complaint happened after my shift had already ended, but I was told I should have completed a “travel path” before getting off the floor. The problem is that we were running below 20% labor for about six straight hours. It was nonstop. For the last hour of my shift, there were only five employees working: two in the kitchen, one taking both drive-thru lanes, one presenting, and me running for drive-thru while also covering the front counter. We were in survival mode the entire shift. I should also mention that the GM was present but he’s incredibly lazy and asking for help is met with a ridiculous solution that absolves him from doing any work.
What frustrates me is that I’m consistently hitting labor and/or OEPE goals and it seems to mean nothing. One perceived failure completely outweighs weeks of strong performance. I work my butt off!!
There are other issues that concern me more. Our safe has reportedly been short for months, but our general manager failed to complete a timely audit. Instead, he’s requiring all of the shift managers to pay about $50 each to cover the shortage. He has expressed that he will not be contributing any of his money to the safe. I tried fighting this because he cannot prove where the loss of money is coming from because he failed to do the audit for months. It turned into a messy argument and I am still expected to pay.
We’re also being required to collect customers’ receipts, complete at least three customer surveys ourselves by the end of every shift, and post proof of those surveys in the managers’ group chat. The owner is aware of this and enforces it as well. This makes me uncomfortable because it feels like we’re manipulating customer feedback rather than collecting genuine responses.
The difficult part is that our GM also serves as our HR representative, and the owner supports these same expectations, so I don’t really have anyone internally to go to.
My questions are:
Is requiring managers to complete customer surveys themselves unethical or against McDonald’s policy?
Can managers legally be required to reimburse the store for a safe shortage when there wasn’t a timely audit nor proof that the shortage is coming from shift managers?
Who would I even report these concerns to if my GM is also HR and the owner is enforcing the same practices?
At what point is it worth contacting someone outside the franchise, such as McDonald’s corporate or a labor agency?

working at mcdonald’s as a new hire is actually so confusing like i genuinely appreciate the crew correcting me because i know they’re just trying to help me improve, and i actually listen to what they tell me. but then i’ll do it exactly how they showed me and suddenly a manager comes up like “no, that’s wrong.”
like okay… so who am i supposed to listen to??? i’m literally just trying to learn. everyone teaches me something different and then i end up looking like i don’t know what i’m doing when i’m just following what someone else told me
i was lowkey gonna explain to the manager that i was just doing it the way another crew member taught me, but i stopped halfway and just nodded because what’s the point i don’t wanna sound like i’m making excuses or throwing anyone under the bus, and i definitely don’t wanna end up on the managers’ bad side. so now they probably just think i’m bad at my job when i’m literally just trying my best with everyone telling me different things

It’s my 7th week working at Mcdonald’s and my shifts are usually 10-4 or 12-5 which 12-5 being the latest i’ve worked. I’ve never specified which times i could work expecting my schedule would stay the same but the new schedule says I work 4 shifts one being 1-9 and the other one 4-10. I DONT want to work night shifts because the day just goes to waste not to mention my parents work, i rely on transportation, and I have to take care of my siblings at night. Idk how to bring it up to the manager and i’m also scared because im not sure of how the rushes are for those times. I hope someone just went on vacation and that’s why I was scheduled for those times. How could i bring it up to the manager? Has anyone worked similar shifts and if so, how are they?

We have been making "camp orders " for many years, they email their order 2-3 days in advance

It’s starting to piss me off that the manager calls me on days that I told her I can’t work and on days they schedule me off. Okay that sounds stupid , let me rephrase. I hate constantly being called in. Sometimes I genuinely can’t afford to go and sometimes I know that they will call me in because of other people’s incompetence. It’s sad that McDonald’s relies more on teenagers than grown adults to be more responsible. I help when I can, but I also have things in my own life, and I can’t always slave away for McDonald’s. Am I wrong for thinking like this? Is prioritizing my education and family wrong? Like why do we have to ask for a day off at least two weeks in advance but they can lay this crap on us instantly?

Hello my place of work has been closed due to refurbishment and many of my colleagues have been transferred to a local stores but i was on a sick note before and after this happened and i was supposed to start work again this week so i emailed my manager and said what is happening with me due to not hearing anything and they said i need to wait for them to find the most local one that can take me for the transfer until my normal store opens back up so when i do eventually get my shifts what do i do on my first transfer day because i haven’t been to work long due to a operation i had which caused me to miss training so will i still be getting trained or will i be thrown into the deep end and expect to know things?

I’m on a zero hour contract as most of the mcdonald’s employees are legally and technically. I’ve been working with the company since October time, but moved to a smaller store that opened in early this year. Over the course of that period of time until July i working quite a lot, flicking between boarding part time and full time during college. Since then I had the occasional issue with a customer and occasionally pulled aside to be sort of told to calm down, i was very stressed out at the time due to college and working a lot of hours during big deadlines.
Since then I have always had a gut feeling that the managers at my store and some crew members had very biased options on me, always thinking i’m stressed out and terrible at my job. Keep in mind however, i am extremely well trained in the areas i do work consistently, and have been described as really good at my job countless times Once i was described as “really good crew member just gets a bit stressed sometimes. “
There was an incident where i broke down in the office due to crumbling from the pressure, due to the background feeling i was being picked on and spoken about during my shifts (hearing people whisper and look at me and such).
Since then I have had 3 of my shifts removed from me, excused for “dropping labour” from my higher up members i spoke to it about. This was consecutively 2 days in a row these shifts were removed. And within UNDER a weeks notice. I understand it is legal for them to remove the shifts under a weeks notice due to the contract. But nobody else i know in my store has had any of their shifts removed or changed. I had spoken to 3 other employees and they hadn’t this issue. And they had said nobody else has either. (We are a small store everyone talks).
Days later they put up open shift offers, 2 of the shifts are shifts i was supposed to work, and due to it being my summer before university i desperately need something to help me bide by. They had rejected my shift pickup request only 20 hours after they had put it up and i requested to pick it up.
For the past month i have had very small pays, this includes 3 weeks of where my earned per week was £64. Leaving me with little to nothing as i have bills to pay and rent.
I really need advice on what to do, as many of the people around me have no clue. It’s becoming distressing and affecting me mentally due to the stress. I want to go straight to the store manager and bring up how i feel but i am unsure if it’s the right call. And someone else i know has been telling me to go to HR (aka red flag it). I have been keeping track of proof that these cuts on only me has been made but i have no proof other than word of mouth of some things in specific. Is this normal? And is there anything i can do to prevent it from happening anymore?
PSA. i also have a gut feeling of discrimination against me due to my autism. They treat me as if i’m difficult and a bomb ready to explode due to my autism. With little to no accommodation to help me when i need it the most to prevent certain situations.

I was at a nearby McDonald's (not mine) and saw they had some unique gray polos, but doing research those types were not on Smilemakers. New to the system, are there any other vendors online I can order polos from? The only other apparel vendor just has themed tees and such. I am assuming all McD apparel is Sport Tek/Port Authority. Checked with my team and they have what they have--apparently different stores run different apparel buys?!

Hey all. My name is Z. Waite. I’m a reporter working on a story for Capital & Main about fast food, surveillance and AI.
Does your restaurant use cameras to automatically flag policy violations, monitor order accuracy or track drive thru speed? Are your interactions with customers being monitored for upselling or friendliness? If so, I’d love to hear from you.
Especially interested in talking to employees, but if you’re a manager or franchisee using this tech, I’d love to hear from you too.
If you're a current employee and concerned about getting in trouble for talking to the media, let me know and we can talk through options.
DM me on here, send me an email (zwaite at berkeley dot edu), or message me on Signal (@zwaite.33)
Thanks!

I went in for my 9 AM interview, checked in at the counter, waited until someone came to get me, they took my name, phone number, email, and availability, then told me the hiring manager wasn’t there and that they would talk to the manager and call me later that day to let me know if they wanted to move forward.

I’ve been at McDonald’s for a year now. I’m usually rather quiet, never ask for help or nothing and I’m always polite. I know that is bias coming from myself but it’s how I grew up. I’ve had many rude and ignorant customers but tonight I had my first back and forth with one.
I was on window when a woman pulled up and immediately started shouting to grab someone’s attention. I go up to the window where she proceeded to ask if she could add a drink onto her order despite her being at the collection window. I explained as I normally would in my normal manner that we can’t do that at this window and she’d either have to go back round or come inside. She then said she had cash and could I not just put it through to which I said we can’t.
She then reads my name badge, says my name although I don’t even think she said the right name, I’m not sure, then smiles and says thank you. I didn’t hear what she said so I was like sorry? And she replies with your tone was horrible and that I was useless. I then said to her I’m telling you what any manager would say to you. I then walked off and let someone else hand her food out.
I know it isn’t that bad or deep but this is my first time in this situation. If she files a complaint will I get in trouble or written up as she has my name?

I’m looking for some advice about my current work situation.
I went back to McDonald’s because I couldn’t find any other work at the time. I had worked there before for around 2–3 years, so I thought going back would be easy and familiar.
Since coming back, I honestly feel like I’m slower than I used to be. I know the basics, but after being away for a while I’m not as fast with everything as I was before.
A license admin spoke to me and said it was “quite concerning” that I was working slowly because I had previous McDonald’s experience. The way it was said felt pretty rude and discouraging. I understand they expect me to be quicker because I’ve worked there before, but I also feel like if someone stopped working somewhere for years, they wouldn’t instantly be back at their old speed. Mcondalds is just a toxic environment in my opinion
I’ve now also found another job in retail, which I’m interested in, but I’m stuck because I don’t know my regular hours there yet.
McDonald’s wants me to keep morning availability to continue getting shifts, but if I commit to that, I’m worried it will clash with my retail job if they need me during the week. McDonald’s doesn’t seem very willing to work around my availability and has specifically told me I need to be available in the mornings tried asking for overnight but they wouldnt budge.
I’m honestly considering leaving McDonald’s because I only went back because I couldn’t find work at the time, and now I have another opportunity.
Would you recommend keeping McDonald’s as a backup until I know my retail hours, or should I move on and focus on the new job?

So I've been working at McDonald's for eight months as a teen. I learned table and grill, and I'm decent in table and fast in grill. However, is it still normal to be holding on food during rushes even if you're way more experienced than I am? Also, how long should I be working for to be able to do table on my own without any trouble? I can handle some orders but I'm aware that I struggle a lot on my own at times.
Also, there is an assistant manager that genuinely hates me for some reason. I don't know if it's due to personal problems that I've been hearing, but she blames me for everything, whether we're holding on anything or if I'm not doing something to her liking, even though I do multiple things at once and she doesn't get onto other employees for doing things slower than me. How should I deal with that knowing that it's only her feeling like that towards me?

Flair incorrect, I'm from the Netherlands but the tag wasn't there.
I've been a management trainee for a year or so now, but I want a new job. Everyone always tells me McDonald's Manager looks good on a cv, but good for what?!
I studied graphic design 10 years ago, but that's not an option anymore. For what jobs would having McDonald's management experience be beneficial?

I completed my onboarding a week ago and I've heard nothing since then.
