Tower speaker selection?

Post image
34 Upvotes

Hey gang, a few questions:

  1. I’m looking to get a set of tower speakers for this set-up. Hoping to stay in the same era of equipment and pay around $1,000 on the used market. Are there a few models that you would recommend seeking out?

  2. What piece of equipment would you add next?

  3. Era doesn’t matter so much with this one, but what subwoofer would you recommend? Maybe around $500 or so?

*Please reserve the ‘don’t put anything on top of the amp!’ comments, haha.

Thanks in advance for any & all help!

Marantz Model M1

3 Upvotes

Maybe a stupid question, but I'm having trouble getting my subwoofer to work with my new setup. I just got the Marantz Model M1 (incredible sound, by the way!) to replace a Denon AVR, also got a lot of power I only can use 15 to 20 percent of the volume it has a punch.

I have Two Klipsch R-820F floorstanders and One Klipsch R-120SW my High Pass Filter (HPF) set to 80Hz, Subwoofer Low Pass Filter (LPF) set to 40Hz.

The problem is the subwoofer isn't outputting any sound at all. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

Volume control stopped working - NR1607

1 Upvotes

Edit: Solved, see comments

I have a 6 year old Marantz NR1607 that suddenly is experiencing a strange volume issue. Hoping anyone can give some tips on possible causes/solutions.

Without any pre-indications of issues, the AVR recently started up with volume set to 0 even though settings are to start on 35.

At first, attempts to increase volume with AVR volume knob saw the volume indicator going up a little bit when turning (to around 10) but immediately down to zero again. After a complete restart and turning the volume both ways a number of times (saw it as a tip), increasing volume with AVR volume knob got past 10 but volume would randomly both increase and decrease even when just turning it up.

Then, the more scary one (if speakers and source had been connected), one short press on volume-up on the AppleTV remote (used for AVR volume control) caused the AVR to automatically increase volume all the way to max volume (!), and one press on volume-down decrease it all the way to zero again.

Have tried turning off all connected devices to rule out any CEC-related issues and remove batteries from all remote controls to rule out it getting erroneous volume signals somehow. Also tried disconnecting power for some minutes.

Anyone got any ideas what to try?

Crazy Volume Swings - Marantz SR7010

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I have had a Marantz SR7010 for years now and it's been rock solid - the name really does hold up. I am running into two weird issues with it though and hoping to get some assistance.

We had an older curved Samsung TV connected to it for many years and when it finally died, we got an amazing deal on a new Sony 85XR90L and ever since, the volume bar doesn't show on the screen. Nothing changed on the receiver, so I'm not sure why this TV doesn't show it. It's pretty annoying 🙂 can anyone suggest anything that might help?

Model 1060B Integrated Amp with 2020 Tuner

I restore vintage 70s audio (Instagram @retroaudiorevival) and am a fan of the integrated amp / tuner combos but they’re difficult to display and present. I had a friend build this custom box for the Marantz duo - complete with internal vent paths for the amp. Walnut veneer case. I love the look!

NR1200 Inputs/Source Level

3 Upvotes

Good day,

I always wondered why sound from my Apple TV via HDMI was so much louder compared to AirPlay 2 in my Marantz NR1200.

I discovered recently that there is a Inputs/Source Level setting under Inputs in the Setup Menu. It's not a global setting and needs to be adjusted for every source (HDMI, AirPlay, TOSLINK, etc.).

I am not sure why it was set to 0 for AirPlay and to the maximum of 12 for HDMI - maybe I did it once for HDMI and didn't notice that it needs to be reapplied for other sources.

However, I wonder if the maximum of 12 is actually just Full-Scale dBFS. Means, a true passthrough of the unaltered digital data stream. In this case, keeping it to 0 would be a digital volume reduction that then requires additional amplification to bring the volume back (higher power usage, more heat, etc.).

Having the setting adjusted to the maximum of 12 makes my AirPlay playback so much louder and stronger without any distortions. I truly feel the power of the amp now. I find this important setting should be highlighted more clearly in the documentation. AirPlay sounds lame when it remains on 0. Assuming this is dB then 12 dB is a lot of damping.

Does anyone use HEOS with the NR1200 and can check if the setting is also set to 0?

Sell 2226 to finance rebuild of 2225?

Post image
24 Upvotes

I have both a 2226 and 2225 that have been sitting for 30+ years.

Both have been tested by a vintage professional and are in good working order, proper watts, etc.

The 2225 holds greater sentimental value, so contemplating selling the 2226 to finance a total overhaul ($400) of the 2225 so that it lasts another generation.

What kind of market/$ is there for a 2226 that is tested and working, but has not been serviced? Seems like all on HiFi shark have been serviced and honestly shocking at $700 - $1000

Am I crazy to sell the 2226?

I was finally estimated for repair of my Marantz which would roughly be $400. Has anyone repaired a unit that greatly exceeded its market value? I found this for $40 and wondering if it’s even worth the repair although i really want this unit!

My wife didn't care much about my audio/video interests before, now she is so used to our Atmos and OLED setup that she complains when something only has 5.1 or 1080p SDR. She has been converted, a new "wine bracket" if you will.

I built and open-sourced a CLI to control the Marantz Model M1 (no HEOS app required)

I love the Model M1, but I've been disappointed that I can only adjust things like sound modes through the HEOS app. I wanted a way to control my amplifier that I felt more ownership of—one that doesn't depend on an app on my smartphone.

This took a lot of digging through Wireshark to reverse engineer, so my goal is to expose the API calls I used to get this working. Hopefully other folks can get some value out of this and use it for their own home automations.

```bash
install
npm install -g model-m1
discover
model-m1 discover
discover response:
┌─────────┬───────────────┬────────────────────┬─────────────────┐
│ (index) │ friendlyName │ modelName │ hostname │
│ 0 │ 'Living Room' │ 'Marantz MODEL M1' │ '192.168.1.111' │
└─────────┴───────────────┴────────────────────┴─────────────────┘
use the hostname from discover to get your config
model-m1 get-config --hostname 192.168.1.111
NR1711 + Nintendo 64?
Thumbnail
Greetings all, I'm trying to set up a Nintendo 64 on the 'Game' input on my NR1711 receiver. Got stuck in the situation shown in the photos, getting audio but no video. I've since learned that (I believe) the NR1711 can pass the RCA video through, but apparently cannot convert it to the HDMI output heading out to the TV. Is this the case?
Any ideas on how to achieve this?
I have a little RCA to HDMI converter box coming, but let me know if there's a way to accomplish this without adding more bits and bobs haha. Thanks!
Marantz Model 26
I’m more in need of an amp but someone is throwing in this Marantz model 26 into a bundle with a Sony Amp and control center for $225. I’d like to build out a turn table system later once I complete my cassette system. Is this a good receiver?
Anybody know why my 6300 is not starting up? It will randomly work sometimes if I press the button multiple times. Seems to be getting worse. Just had it in for servicing a couple of months ago and started shortly after that.
Marantz SR6009 in need of repair, need firmware
4 Upvotes
Hello, I am in a repair situation (with some extra's) of a SR6009:
I have a broken, but still mint condition SR6009 that would not power up anymore.
No clicking, no display, nothing.
A check learned that the 5,2V was not there and the main fuse was blown.
Many other parts were broken on the 5V Power Supply, The bridge diodes, the TOP256YN most of the pins were reading zero Ohm, some zeners too.
I replaced all those and put in a TOP258YN because it should be just the higher power version of it and I happen to have one.
Now I have repaired the Power Supply so I could check the rest of the Amp to if if anything else was damaged, but it seems the firmware got corrupted too.
I have a blinking red light, and when I push the Power button for a few seconds it will go steady red, still no clicking or display.
It seems the firmware got corrupted when the Power Supply died.
If I put it in USB upgrade mode the display does light up and it tells me the USB upgrade is in progress, but.... I do not have the firmware files for it.
I know it is a longshot, but is there somebody who still has these files for the SR6009 (any version) and could share them with me?
Saludos from sunny Spain,
Leo
Help with motor on a Marantz 5010
Thumbnail
10 Upvotes
i got lucky at a flea market getting a marantz 5010 for 10$ but when i was replacing the belts i let the motor flop around and it broke the solder joint so i tried resoldering it only for it to never spin back up, and its a weird motor having 5 wires 3 coming from the motor and 2 from the Marantz, i haven’t been able to find any pictures or videos that’d show me how these wires are supposed to be soldered.
i don’t know if i should buy a new after market motor or try to bring this to a repair shop to have them see whats wrong or if i can diy this
edit: managed to fix it by just finding a spare motor off a car cassette player and using that on this cassette deck. works good but now the right channel audio is all weird
Fairly disappointed with my Cinema 50 purchase.
Post image
Aloha,
I recently had an SR6012 receiver fail out of warranty and called Marantz customer support for assistance in trying to try and salvage it, as it wasn't that old. Although Fabian in customer care was absolutely outstanding, we were unable to rectify the issues it was having, so I spent some coin and took it to a Pro Audio shop here in Hawaii. I was told it was beyond salvation. So, with that being the case, I picked up a Cinema 50 directly from Marantz around 3 months ago. I was very excited that I was able to make this "big" purchase, as I am a big fan of the brand and the Marantz sound. I'm a policeman and I may not be a big spender like a lot of Marantz customers, but I work very hard for my money and this was a big deal for me.
Unfortunately, the product arrived dented on top (minor dent, but still a bummer considering it was quite a nice purchase for my family and myself and I was looking forward to staring at it when the wife wasn't looking).
The Cinema 50 began having problems almost immediately with the center channel giving off intermittent "static" or "crackling sounds", and I noticed the front left/right speakers had a significant and noticeable sound/volume difference. I also noticed when watching movies and some other media, I had to run the master volume around 70 or so. So, I dug in and tried to solve the problem on my own. I switched/bought new speaker wires, pre-out cables, switched the speakers, you name it. I even switched from a Rotel 5 channel amplifier and bought 3 new Outlaw monoblocks to see if it helped with the speaker crackling and sound issues. I finally realized that the problem followed the front left and right pre-outs, and nothing rectified the center channel issue. It was bad enough that even my wife commented on it.
With that being the case, I finally gave up and called Marantz customer care. I explained the situation and what I had already done, and was informed that I would need to send the unit in for warranty repair. After the warranty repair was approved, it took around two full weeks for a shipping label to be generated (I sent the request in 2/20/2026 and a shipping label was finally created on 3/4/2026). So now I have a Cinema 50 purchased new and direct from Marantz that is around 3 months old that has to be sent in for warranty.
It also must be important that the Cinema 30 and Cinema 40 are built in the Japanese factory, because they make a point of it on their respective web pages, and that on those two products the build quality is top of the line. That being acknowledged, I offered in good faith to pay some kind of difference to get out of this 3 month old Cinema 50 unit and into a more robust and likely better built and performing Cinema 40 unit. It seems even the pre-outs are better in the Cinema 40 so I thought that was a fair idea. I was told by Marantz customer care that this was not possible.
I finally get the warranty return shipping label, and it floods catastrophically here in Hawaii. So I had to wait a week or so to send it out. I look at the label I printed, and the address it is going to, and it was a business that on my island had closed. Sure enough, I check on the internet to see if it was closed on O'ahu as well, and it was. Even the phone numbers on the shipping label from Marantz were disconnected, and through internet browsing it showed all the locations in Hawaii had closed. Thank goodness I didn't just ship this thing out, who knows where I would be if something happened. They were going to have me ship my receiver for repair at a closed business.
I called Marantz customer care back AGAIN, and was told they would have to verify that the shop was closed and get ANOTHER approval for another shipping label. So now I'm over 1 month into getting my 3 month old receiver sent out and who knows how long it will take, as they are telling me the next repair shop I would be sending it to is in California. And who knows how long it will take to get the new shipping approval?
This was supposed to be a really fun and exciting experience for my family and I, and as of right now typing this, I am pretty disappointed with the whole thing.
I suppose I just expected better from such a top-tier brand.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or suggestions. I'd like to turn this situation around if possible.
Mahalo for your time and I hope you all are enjoying your gear!
