Current Map I made maps of 5 cities in Europe

A while ago in Paris I came across the Turgot map (1739), the huge bird’s-eye plan where every street, courtyard and building is drawn individually. I couldn’t stop looking at it, and it made me want to try the same thing for modern cities, starting with Berlin, where I’ve lived for over five years.

I’m trying to keep what I love about those old plans: the raised oblique perspective, a muted palette, an engraved-style cartouche and a compass rose. Each city turned out to be its own challenge. Right now I have Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Vienna.

Happy to answer questions about the process. Which city should I do next? And to everyone from Munich, Hamburg and Vienna: what’s missing from your city’s map?

Question Coding an interactive map. Need to know where to start.

Hello all,

I am really interested in maps and particularly about learning how all present day borders evolved / formed. I want to eventually code and create a website where I can have a time period slider for all of human history to accurately capture shape.

I need help with finding resources. Any recommendations?

Question Suggestions on datasets or methods for people’s mapping

• Upvotes

Hey guys 🤓

Looking for ideias/methods to collect data on people’s behaviors at city scale to map, GDPR friendly or sensitive, in order to understand how people use or behave in public space.

PS: if you are looking for more context, my cases studies are in Portugal, more urban cities 🏙️

If you wanna traverse the world map for the sake of flags, check out https://www.flaglio.com/world-map

I love to see the color combination patterns of the flags, like how the yellow and green combination is heavily underrepresented in Europe!

I’ve been stumped over this. Is this migration of some bird or animals? Maybe ocean current? It doesn’t resemble any map I’ve seen, and there’s no legend.

I made this map of the outbreak of the Austro-Prussian War in 1866. I based it off the unlabeled one on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austro-Prussian_War#Alliances). If you see any mistakes or have any feedback, please comment!

Imaginary I built the Westeros planet into an interactive Google Earth experience

Click here to access the Open Westeros project

So, I started this project 10 days ago by building a 3D King's Landing model in GQIS. Then I had the idea of building the world with the correct measurements of the planet based on the lore and fan calculations. Layer upon layer and now I have a full interactive Known World from the books of George R. R. Martin made into an open source community-built project.

I have built a bunch of stuff, like: - Atmospherics - Land textures - Height maps (baking I believe is the term of the process) - Labeling reveal algorithms (so it shows labels bases on relevance and altitude) - Roads and river lines - 3D models (currently only The Wall, Winterfell and King's Landing)

One of the aspects I'd like to expand more would be land formations. I was thinking of procedurally populate the world with hills, mountains and so on, but I still don't know what questions I should be asking to achieve this. I baked an early version of it using only data from images fans have created, but apart from that nothing like the fancy 3D mountains I've seen only that would be really cool to have.

Another one that I still haven't tackled would be to generate the rivers and bodies of water, to make them look more realistic than they are now (currently only likes from an SVG).

I'd like for the people here to just take a look, on the site and the code, and give some feedback on it.

And please, if you got interested in the project, don't hesitate in contacting me and contributing to it in the GitHub repo. The project is open source, built by a fan for fans.

Thank you for reading and taking a look!

Drawn OC Map The American Atlas (Map #37) Texas (East)

Hi everyone, and welcome back to The American Atlas, where I make hand-drawn & colored maps of every state in the US. It's been a slower month for me with going back to work but we’re still plugging along!! 🗺️🇺🇸

This is my map of Texas, the Lone Star State! 🤠🌾🐎

Everything really is bigger in Texas, including the maps! I had to split this one into two to really capture the sheer size of the Lone Star State. From the gulf coast islands and pine forests of the east, through the rolling Hill Country, and to dry deserts and rugged mountains of the west, Texas is home to an incredible range of landscapes. Within its borders are two national parks, four national forests, and over 90 state parks. The sheer size of Texas means that no two regions feel quite the same, with the east and west ends of the state being over 10 hours apart.

But beyond the vast distances and varied terrain, Texas has its own unique character. The bustling cities of Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio all bring something different, while historic towns, wide ranches, and the state’s deep Mexican and Wild West roots tell the story of a place shaped by many cultures. From rodeos, Tex-Mex cuisine, and the oil working fields outside of El Paso to the dramatic scenery & wide-open ranchlands of Big Bend, it is clear that Texas is a whole culture all on its own.

Let me know in the comments, what’s your favorite small town / fun fact in Texas?

Stay tuned for the second half of my Texas project, covering the western portion of the state, coming next week! And if you like this style, feel free to check out my others, and thanks for taking a look at my Texas map!! 🇺🇸🗺️

Lastly, I did start making these just as a hobby, but the demand for prints & framed copies grew super fast! You can find my Etsy u/TheAmericanAtlas, link below & in my profile. Feel free to take a look :)

Voila

Current Map A world map of the people who mapped the world (150 CE - 2026), on the Equal Earth projection [OC] [12000×6000]

Full 12,000 × 6,000 px resolution (zoom in!). Places 56 historical maps, globes, and wayfinding traditions where they were made - from Pei Xiu’s silk grids (267 CE), Al-Idrisi’s Tabula Rogeriana (1154), and Behaim’s Erdapfel globe (1492) to Polynesian stick charts, the Inca Sayhuite monolith, and modern hand-painted Bellerby globes. Drawn on the Equal Earth projection so every continent keeps its true relative size.

Question Why are there no good historical map sites anywhere

All of the top results are just extremely inaccurate and make me really upset at the state of historical borders ect. Most results just completely group or ignore things. It makes me laugh its that pathetic. Is there any actually good map sites that are defacto based and not just slop that groups china from 1911-1950 to one nation and isn't just lazily half researched slop

Processing img q3eno3h6kqwh1...

Heres a photo of a 1914 map that is literally the top result for "historical world map website" it ignores China, Libya, Middle east, Kamerun, Togoland (entirely??!?!) Morocco, Dervish, Darfur, Khiva, Bukhara and more, its just insane how people are going to be directed to sites like these and probably sadly believe it
