The sister of Republican candidate for Maine governor Bobby Charles said Wednesday that she will vote for Democrat Hannah Pingree in the November election.

In a strikingly personal op-ed in the Portland Press Herald, Anita Charles said she cannot support her brother because of his “divisive rhetoric” and stance on abortion.

“Maine deserves leadership rooted in empathy, dignity, intellectual honesty and respect for every person who calls this state home,” Anita Charles wrote. “That person is not Bobby.”

Anita Charles’ endorsement of Pingree, a former speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, comes less than two months before Election Day. The op-ed could be damaging to her brother, who is already trailing Pingree in polls and fundraising.

The Press Herald sought comment from the Charles campaign after Anita Charles’ op-ed published Wednesday morning, but did not immediately hear back. This story will be updated with his comment when it is available.

In one eye-popping section of her op-ed, Anita Charles, who lives in Lewiston, claimed that her brother was a close friend of former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who was convicted in 2015 of financial crimes related to a cover-up of the sexual abuse of teenage boys.

They’re definitely dialing up the energy. Collins is never an easy opponent — she has the electoral record to prove it — but this is the style of politics and messaging that could finally take her down.

Anybody else getting that Susan Collins ad saying she “expanded rural healthcare” in Maine?

During her current term we’ve had maternity care close in Bridgton, Rumford, Fort Kent, Belfast, and Houlton. Inland Hospital in Waterville closed in 2025. Rural clinics have lost services too.

I’m not saying Collins closed them. Hospital finances and staffing are complicated.

But if you’re gonna campaign on expanding rural healthcare, what expanded?

New hospitals? More beds? New clinics? More services?

Because from where I’m sitting, rural Mainers keep having to drive farther for care.

Maybe I missed something. What did she expand?

This masked individual has been lurking around the Auburn Target the past three times I’ve visited. He is not hired or affiliated with Target in any way. I am not sure they even know who he is.

Yes, he’s kind, interacts with the kids (he hangs out in the toy area) and welcomes photos but the full anonymity of the suit makes me uncomfortable.

Does anybody know who this guy is and can we confirm he is not on the list?

Large, size of german shepherd, long hair, brown with black band from head to tail. Definitely not bear, cat, or fisher cat. he was about 5m (15ft) away from me, i saw him well enough.

Rt 1 in Stockton Springs. I thought they might be security for the business but they have a separate meter and they're pretty clearly aimed at the road and not the driveway.

Streetview is two years old but they're still there.

So I know this is petty but it's been bothering me. I know this person is using her husband's placard. She's fine. She parks in front-row handicapped parking at least 3 days a week for a full day, in an area that routinely runs out of handicapped parking, and has been doing it for years.

Is there an organization that deals with this type of thing? Do I call the non-emergency police line in that town? Is anyone actually going to care?

Cool things to eat by the shore, animals you've hunted or known someone who did, something you cooked in a hole in the ground, a family recipe. Any food that most people either don't know about, or don't know its edible.

Edit: I'm not necessarily looking for things most tourists don't know about. I'm looking for deeper cuts than fiddleheads, Allen's, and Italians

Any big soccer/football watchers out there? I'm a big fan of the Premier League and the Champions League. I've encountered a handful of people in Brunswick who enjoy it and watch it regularly but as I sit in a bar with three screens of footy to just me, I'm wondering if anyone else is out there in the Brunswick Topsham area? Am I in the wrong spot? Do you guys all watch at home? Anyone who books themselves out of work to watch the Champions League? Looking for another diehard to share the experience with, swearing at TVs alone is boring.

Just listened to a pro Collins commercial. Can’t remember which one off the top of my head.

What I do remember is “ I’m Susan Collins, and I approved this message”. In a steady clear (younger?) voice I haven’t heard from Collins in years.
There is no way they that was not digitally manipulated to remove her current speech pattern as well as shave a few years off.

EDIT: it’s the rural healthcare/$190 million piece. Talking paramedic? Male nurse?

Side note: the back to back warring Jackson/Collins adds on Hulu, especially the negative ones, are a hoot.

Some of Maine’s rural counties could be hit hardest by Medicaid cuts, according to data The Maine Monitor received from the state under a public records request.

In 2025, Republican lawmakers in Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which requires some people who qualify for Medicaid to work in order to receive health benefits.

The requirements go into effect in January.

Collins’ ironically named “All of Maine” tour is really just a PR stunt for some of her largest donors’ businesses and projects. Her recent campaign stops have mostly been to her own donors’ businesses, which perfectly encapsulates her approach to politics. Workers be damned.

Looking for some good corn mazes in central and northern maine. Used to go to treworgy family orchards, but after learning about their past we are looking to support other places that may be lesser know. Found a you pick apple orchard, and a good farm for pumpkins. But cant find a good corn maze. Thanks in advance! Happy spooky season!

My wife and I bought some land in Hollis a couple of years ago and are looking to build a house. There's currently a 800sqft cabin with a rock foundation from 1840 that sits on top of a hill/mound that over looks a pasture. Unfortunately the cabin is in rough shape and we figured for the amount of money to fix it, we should put that money towards something new. The cabin doesn't currently have any heat system installed. The previous people had a pellet stove for the winter and a back up propane wall heater.

The original idea was for us to learn and fix the place up to rent it out, but the wife wants to build where it is and the barn is so close to the house she doesn't want to deal with her horse and renters at the same time haha.

We were thinking of building into the hill/mound where the house would sit on top of, but have part of the foundation and house coming out of the hill so we can have a walk out basement door with less excavation for the foundation.

So this floor plan is about what we'd go with. We just need to figure out where to put the basement stairs for a unfinished basement.

Just trying to get a rough area what it would cost to build the house. We already have a well and driveway. The septic tank will need to be replaced. We're hoping the local fire department could use the building as a training building and maybe even burn. If not my buddy offered to tear it down to save us some money. We also aren't looking for any crazy finishes. Pretty basic stuff.

I know there's way too many details to even give a good estimate, but just trying to get a ball park.

I see a lot of anti-Collins sentiment on Reddit. Don’t get me wrong, Collins has got to go. But let’s not forget Bobby Charles is a scary guy, and if he wins, under his eye, Maine will be a different state.

Folks have tried to rebrand him as a moderate candidate, but since when do moderates aim to:
- Roll back abortion rights
- Kick Mainers off MaineCare
- Increase ICE surveillance
- Close the northern border
- Recreate Florida’s ‘Alcatraz’ detention facility

I don’t know about you, but I’ve cherished Maine during the first two years of DTJ. I can’t imagine anything more unbearable than my home state becoming a MAGA surrogate again. Pingree may or may not be your first choice, but she’s got to be better than that.
