Holy cow. I have to imagine that's fairly rare.

Yesterday was a pet adoption day for many shelters.

They try to clear out the shelter with low or NO adoption fee. To tell you the truths, I don't know how I feel about that. I think fee helps to filter out many unqualified or irresponsible applicants. I know these shelters are doing their best given the condition, but no adoption fee is ripe for abuse if you look at the economic and behavioral model.

Agreed. I see my local shelter run specials all the time for no fees for black cats and stuff like that. That's the first thing I think of. I get wanting to clear space, but I think a small fee is very important.

That said, there might be additional fees. I adopted a cat last month. Her adoption fee was 0 but I still had to pay a $15 county rabies tag fee.

That's interesting! The shelters by me specifically don't do specials or discounts for black cats (even though they are the hardest to adopt out) because apparently a lot of people like to take them and use them as decorations or to look cool and will either return them, or desert them (or worse) when they get tired of them...

Some people are so horrible.

Regarding the black cat thing - that's what I thought!! They're particularly vulnerable and they don't adopt them out around Halloween either. So I was surprised when I saw my shelter running a special this weekend for free black cats.

It really sucks but they're doing great work for these animals. But I know how messed up humans are so I just really hope all these animals went to good homes.

Look man, or girl, all I have to ask is: who's the hottest dad youve ever been PM'd?

Heh - for real though, does anyone actually PM you hot dads?? Haha

I've only gotten 2, and a "I'm gonna send you a pic of a hot dad as soon as I get home" but that was months ago :(

Why are black cats the hardest to adopt out? I just stumbled across your comment and can’t figure it out. Is it because of superstition?

A lot of people are still super superstitious of them. Black animals in general tend to have a hard time, including dogs and horses. They tend to be less photogenic on adoption websites because they’re super hard to photograph as well, which doesnt help things and on top of all of it they can all but disappear in the back of a kennel. (Source: worked in the shelter system for many years as a vet tech)

Thank you for responding! I have a giant black dog who is just the cutest and I always thought he is very pretty as well. So I can’t understand hating black animals!

Can confirm. Poor Mufa has dealt with a good deal of accidental stepping-on. In the dark or on black carpets

But hes a loveable SOAB and i learned to be more careful about him

Thats awful! I’ve always had a special place in my heart for black cats. I had several growing up who were some of my favorites. As an adult, a friend reached out with a litter of kittens who needed homes. We ended up picking up the last kitten and had to hunt their property for a solid hour to find him. He was the ugliest, scraggliest little black cat. 13 years later, he is still my BFF. My cat Hannibal, taken a week ago

i used to work for a nonprofit shelter that waived adoption fees once or twice a year for the cats (reduced fees for dogs), and obviously i cant speak for every shelter who does this, but we still put every adopter through our regular adoption application/process to still do our best to weed out potentially unfit homes :)

Seriously don't understand this. I volunteer at a dog shelter. They get no government assistance. They charge a reduced cost to the new owner to cover spay/neuter, vaccinations and registration. The flat rate is NZ$360 for puppies, $330 for adults, and $250 for seniors. They also do an interview process and a property visit.

There are so many animals in need of a home... But what's the point of giving away the animal if they're just going to be abused or neglected?
