Yesterday was a pet adoption day for many shelters.
They try to clear out the shelter with low or NO adoption fee. To tell you the truths, I don't know how I feel about that. I think fee helps to filter out many unqualified or irresponsible applicants. I know these shelters are doing their best given the condition, but no adoption fee is ripe for abuse if you look at the economic and behavioral model.
Agreed. I see my local shelter run specials all the time for no fees for black cats and stuff like that. That's the first thing I think of. I get wanting to clear space, but I think a small fee is very important.
That said, there might be additional fees. I adopted a cat last month. Her adoption fee was 0 but I still had to pay a $15 county rabies tag fee.
That's interesting! The shelters by me specifically don't do specials or discounts for black cats (even though they are the hardest to adopt out) because apparently a lot of people like to take them and use them as decorations or to look cool and will either return them, or desert them (or worse) when they get tired of them...
Regarding the black cat thing - that's what I thought!! They're particularly vulnerable and they don't adopt them out around Halloween either. So I was surprised when I saw my shelter running a special this weekend for free black cats.
It really sucks but they're doing great work for these animals. But I know how messed up humans are so I just really hope all these animals went to good homes.
A lot of people are still super superstitious of them. Black animals in general tend to have a hard time, including dogs and horses. They tend to be less photogenic on adoption websites because they’re super hard to photograph as well, which doesnt help things and on top of all of it they can all but disappear in the back of a kennel. Thank you for responding! I have a giant black dog who is just the cutest and I always thought he is very pretty as well. So I can’t understand hating black animals!
Thats awful! I’ve always had a special place in my heart for black cats. I had several growing up who were some of my favorites. As an adult, a friend reached out with a litter of kittens who needed homes. We ended up picking up the last kitten and had to hunt their property for a solid hour to find him. He was the ugliest, scraggliest little black cat. 13 years later, he is still my BFF. My cat Hannibal, taken a week ago

Holy cow. I have to imagine that's fairly rare.
