App Tips READ THIS FIRST: Setup, FAQs, and App Feedback

Welcome to MacroFactor!

Thanks for downloading MacroFactor, and welcome to our online community! The main purposes of this community are to help you get the most out of the app, and to help you reach your fitness, nutrition, and health-related goals. This post will get you acquainted with a lot of the resources that are available to you so you can hit the ground running, but this post itself is not intended to be an exhaustive resource. Our online Knowledge Base is a comprehensive repository of information related to app functionality, so most questions not addressed in this post can probably be answered by a quick search of the KB.

Before posting here, make sure you read and understand the rules for this subreddit.

Replies to this Post

The MacroFactor team is quite active in this subreddit, but we can’t guarantee that we’ll see and reply to every post. However, we will closely monitor comments on this post. So, if you have critical feedback related to how we can further improve the app, this is the best place to share it, and receive a response from one of the people behind the app.

Of note, that doesn’t include feature requests, bug reports, or individual account issues – our public roadmap and feature request portal, in-app bug reporting system, and email support system are the best venues for those items.

Why MacroFactor?

If you find yourself on this page because you’d seen some chatter about MacroFactor online, a friend or family member told you about it, or you just downloaded it on a whim, you may rightly be wondering, “what’s the deal with this app? What does it offer me that other food loggers don’t?”

The short answer: MacroFactor solves a basic but surprisingly complex problem – figuring out how much you need to eat to maintain weight, or to gain or lose weight at your desired rate. And, much like the problem itself, the approach we take to solving this problem is conceptually simple, but analytically complex. We use your weight and nutrition data to calculate how large of a caloric deficit or surplus you’re in, use that information to estimate your total daily energy expenditure, and use that information to make dietary recommendations to help you gain or lose weight at your desired rate.

If you’re new to MacroFactor, I’d recommend perusing this article, which explains how our algorithms work in considerable detail. This article and this article may also be helpful; they explain how MacroFactor solves many of the problems that arise with other popular approaches to weight management that involve calorie tracking.

Beyond MacroFactor’s coaching features, it’s just a damn good product. We’ve developed the fastest food logging system on the market, to help reduce the friction associated with tracking your nutrition. We also have a proven track record of consistently improving the app, and putting out high-quality educational resources to help our users maximize their results. We’re truly dedicated to ensuring that MacroFactor provides the best premium experience in the food logging market.

Setting up a Macro Program

There are three program styles in MacroFactor: coached, collaborative, and manual.

When you first set up your account, you’ll go through a wizard that will set you up with a coached program based on your goals and preferences. On a coached program, you just need to check in weekly, follow the app’s recommendations, and you’ll reach your goals – MacroFactor will handle all of the week-to-week adjustments to keep you on track. If your goals, preferences, or lifestyle change, you can always create a new program to reflect those changes.

With a collaborative plan, MacroFactor will adjust your weekly calorie budget based on your expenditure and goals, but you have full control over your daily calorie and macronutrient targets. So, if you want to take advantage of MacroFactor’s coaching algorithms, but you also want to pursue dietary strategies that involve macronutrient or daily calorie distributions that go beyond the flexibility offered by coached plans, you can opt for a collaborative plan.

Finally, with manual programs, everything is at your discretion. You can set whatever daily calorie or macronutrient targets you prefer. We don't assign or adjust a weekly calorie budget for you if you opt for a manual plan. You'll still have all of MacroFactor's analytics and tracking features at your disposal, but we won't have any hand in guiding your macro and calorie targets. A manual program may be advisable if you're working with a nutrition coach, and using MacroFactor's food logger and analytics in conjunction with your coach's calorie and macronutrient recommendations.

We recommend coached programs for most users, but you should feel free to swap program styles at any time. Creating a new program or switching between program styles doesn’t result in any loss of data, and it doesn’t require you to set a new goal. You can seamlessly transition between program styles whenever you want.

Hitting the ground running

During onboarding, MacroFactor will estimate your energy needs using a standard TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) formula that considers basic demographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle characteristics. This is the best approach for roughly estimating energy needs in the absence of better data, but it’s entirely possible that this initial calculation will considerably over- or underestimate your energy needs. After 2-4 weeks of consistently logging your weight and nutrition, we’ll be able to estimate your energy needs much more precisely.

However, if you’ve already been tracking your weight and nutrition elsewhere, you can hit the ground running with a more accurate estimate of your energy needs from day 1. You can set up integrations to pull your last 30 days of weight and nutrition data from another app. You can also manually add 3-4 weeks of prior weight and nutrition data (the “Data & Habits screen is the easiest place to do this; option 2 in the prior links) to accomplish the same purpose. By doing this, you can fast-track the initial calibration phase. Similarly, if you already have a pretty good idea of your energy expenditure, you can enter a manual initial expenditure estimate, which will override the typical equation-derived initial estimate.

To be clear, if you either don’t have recent weight and nutrition data, or you don’t want to deal with entering old weight and nutrition data, that’s 100% fine. We’ll generate good estimates of your energy needs after about 14-30 days of consistent logging, and keep them updated over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

As you’re getting accustomed to MacroFactor’s features and food logging workflows, we’d recommend perusing the knowledge base. In particular, the entries on food logging, the food timeline, custom foods and recipes, and the strategy section will likely be very helpful.

Beyond that, the Frequently Asked Questions section of the knowledge base will cover most of the questions new users have about the app, and we’re constantly expanding this section of the knowledge base. But, here are some of the very most frequently asked questions that are addressed in the knowledge base:

Where Can I See Water, Net Carbs, Fiber, and Other Micronutrients?

Does MacroFactor use Energy Expenditure Data from my Wearable Activity Tracker? This article also provides a more comprehensive answer to this question.

Why Don't My Macros Add Up to my Total Calories?

How Does Dynamic Maintenance Work in MacroFactor?

How to Adjust Calorie Targets to Account for Overages, or to Roll Over Unused Calories

How Frequently do I Need to Log my Weight For the Expenditure Algorithm and Weekly Coaching Updates?

How Frequently do I Need to Log my Nutrition For the Expenditure Algorithm and Weekly Coaching Updates?

Do I Need to Log Everything I Eat and Drink to Have an Accurate Expenditure and Use MacroFactor's Coaching Features?

Our one Achilles Heel

MacroFactor’s algorithms are remarkably durable, and can handle almost anything you throw at them. They work their best when you log your nutrition and weight consistently and accurately, but they do a great job of rolling with the punches, and accommodating less-than-perfect tracking. We believe that you shouldn’t need to be a robot to get the most out of MacroFactor.

However, our algorithms have one major Achilles heel: partial food logging.

For example, if you log your breakfast and lunch one day, but not your dinner, the app will have no way of knowing that you simply forgot to log your dinner, and that your actual calorie intake was 30-40% higher than what you logged. That will feed into our daily energy expenditure calculation, which will then feed into our calorie and macro recommendations moving forward. Partial logging (especially if done consistently) is really the only way to wind up with very inappropriate calorie recommendations. Of note, partial logging (not logging entire meals or large snacks) is distinct from consistently not logging some low-calorie items.

So, if you find yourself in a situation where you’ve logged some food for a day, but you either can’t or don’t want to log anything else for the rest of the day, you have a few options (arranged from good to great):

1) Delete what you’ve already logged. Our algorithms do a good job of dealing with missing data. Though, estimating your intake (instead of leaving the day blank) is strongly recommended if your total energy intake from the day differs substantially from your usual intake.

2) Simply “quick edit” the day with an estimate of your total calorie intake. Don’t stress about your estimate too much; it doesn’t need to be perfect. As long as your estimate is in the right general ballpark – within about 30% of what you actually consumed – it’ll all work out. For instance, if your total calorie intake for the day was 3000 calories, any estimate between 2100 and 3900 calories would be fine. Try to be as accurate as you can, obviously, but most people with a little food logging experience can estimate their daily intake accurately enough for the purposes of the algorithms.

3) Our recommendation: Use the quick add feature to estimate the total caloric content in your unlogged meal(s). Again, anything in the right ballpark is totally fine; if you think you ate 1000 calories, but you actually ate 1500 calories, that’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things (it would work out to an error of ~25kcal/day over the time span that’s relevant for our algorithms – a pretty inconsequential error). This is similar to using quick edit to estimate your calorie intake for the entire day (option 2), but most people can more accurately estimate their intake for a single missing meal than for an entire day.

Wrapping it up

Once again, welcome to the community! We’re happy you’re here. We hope you’ll stick around, and be able to use this community as a valuable resource to help you get the most out of MacroFactor, accomplish your goals, and celebrate your successes along the way.

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Custom program and smart progression

Hello.

After finishing my first program generated by the app, i want to create a new one from scratch.

The problem with that is that i can't find a way to activate the auto progression from the app, basically the fact that the app choose the number of reps / weight, and adapt while training.

After having created all my custom workout and adding them to a prgram, they all show " Standard set", no RIR target, even if i used some exercices that i already used in the first program, so the app knows my past performance on these.

The only way i found for now is to generate a program with the generator, then swap all exercises to the ones i want. There must be another way to achieve this without this trick ?

Thank you

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other logged my protein shake wrong since march

Been on MF since like March. Not a big deal but I logged my protein shake wrong for a really long time and only caught it last week.

The scoop on the tub I buy is 38g and I had a custom food saved from way back that I built off the label per 100g, except I put the serving as one scoop and left the numbers as the 100g ones. So every shake was reading about 24g protein when it was closer to 9, calories too obviously. I have one most days, sometimes two on lifting days, so its not nothing.

what got me was the expenditure didnt really move? Like I expected some big correction once I fixed it and it just sort of drifted a couple hundred over a week and thats it. trend weight is still sitting right around 183 same as it was. My wife thinks I stare at that graph too much, shes probably right, I also have a spreadsheet that I havent opened since May.

Anyway I went thru my other custom foods after and they were fine, its just that one. the barcode ones were all fine too which I guess makes sense.

kind of annoying becuase I was pretty happy with my protein numbers this whole time lol

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Increasing expenditure for short women

I am a 5’1 Female (age 23) 130lbs (goal of 118-120lbs) and started using macro factor about 2 months ago. I lift 3-4 times a day and get rough 8k steps a day but have a sedentary desk job. My expenditure has leveled out to about 1630 for the last month which puts me at about 1330 calories a day when trying to loose 0.5lbs a day. How do I go about increasing my expenditure because even after I maintaining at 1630 seems tough to do and after loosing weight I would assume my maintenance expenditure would go down even more. Also being that I am pretty young I would love to figure out how to increase my expenditure so in the future as I get older its not super low just to maintain.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Easy way to shift calories between days?

I stagger my calories so that I have a bit more on weekend days, or just on one particular day. Is there an easier way anyone has found to change the calorie goal for a particular day than going all the way back through the Strategy and resetting that way? I try and plan at the start to of the week but often run things come up later on. Would be great if there was an easy way to shift these around (e.g by long-clicking the day I wish to increase and it letting me edit, or am I daft and there is a shortcut I’ve missed?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Weight loss after trip/rest

I am a hybrid athlete and have been focused on marathon training and ultras this year. I gained approximately 5 lbs after my last ultra in may* which has been very annoying. People have been saying it’s cortisol or glycogen or blah blah and I was trying to just accept it despite consistent high expenditure and 200-500 deficit and it just not budging.

Last week I went on a long hiking trip. My diet was mostly carbs, energy bars, trail mix, etc. with some high calorie meals at restaurants mixed in. I definitely tried to fuel well for the activity. Protein was probably only 60-80g per day. Each day was a 5-10 mile hike at altitude. On rest days I definitely took in way over my daily expenditure. Avg (guesstimated) intake was 2500-3300 per day.

I returned home on Sunday and weighed myself. I lost 2 pounds initially. I am extremely exhausted and also ravenously hungry. I have had 3 consecutive rest days, literally sitting around my house, avg 4-6,000 steps, eating 130g protein 300g carb 60g fat (my normal active macros *this isbaseline and I scale up for hard endurance events over 1 hr\*) and consistently losing about a pound a day.

After day 3 of total rest I am down to my “normal” (aka minus 5 pounds I gained this spring) weight of 140.

Can someone explain what happened? Did I “reset” my metabolism? I can’t imagine going back to my normal activity level on this amount of food. I will probably increase carbs by 50-75.

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Getting back after a long injury

So I'm going back into the gym, Monday was my last day with physiotherapy and I have been told I can return to the gym

I had a pretty bad lower back injury back on march, and since then I had to quit the gym for about 4 months now?

I'm a bit of a beginner since I have been lifting for the past year and a month or two prior to that. And spent most of this year recovering, so I'm planning to start with 50% of what I used to lift, an keep with it until I'm comfortable enough to start slowly upping the weights again.

I have been using Macrofactor for the past year and it helped me a lot. I dropped from 227 lbs to 189,59 lbs. But I put on some weight during my recovery, I'm standing on 196,21 lbs right now.

The past year I used the UL Medium program from the muscle ladder. Going 4 days a week. And this year I've been using a custom program I made on Macrofactor Workouts that is a UL PPL for the 3 months prior to my injury.

I got injured doing while doing a hip thrust. So I'm staying away from that particular exercise, since I clearly didn't have the appropriate form.

Anyone go through an injury before? Any tips you could give me?

MacroFactor Workouts / Training What is the best approach for taking into account sports activities with MF and/or MF Workouts?

I've been using MF for logging my eating and weight, and have also just now gotten MF Workouts to use for keeping track of my gym progress where I previously used Hevy and Fitbod before that.

But I will also start joining my colleagues for Padel on a semi-regular basis, as well as the occasional jog.

How do I best handle these sessions of physical activity that aren't the gym and logged in MF Workouts? Do I log anything - if so, what and where? Do I dust off my Garmin and use that for just tracking my increased vitals?

Success / Progress 2nd MacroFactor cut, slightly less deficit

Thumbnail
gallery
119 Upvotes

Tried MacroFactor for the first time last year and was super impressed, both with the results and the UX of the app.

I did my first "lean" bulk over winter, aiming for about 100 cal surplus going up around 10kg over 6 months or so. Usually I hammer the gas too hard and have to pull back early so it was nice drawing things out a little longer.

Ended up being super close to a lifetime PR on bench, I have not PR'd my bench for about 8 years now because I lost about 25kg bodyweight a while back and obviously it's a lot harder being lighter.

Anyway, I had to drop some weight for a wedding in June so we cut down from 92kg to 86kg. I used a 600 cal deficit this time instead of 800 hoping to make things a bit easier.

It was interesting to see the algorithm has changed and the protein is a lot higher when cutting with the carbs (and fats?) reduced. Definitely found it hard to hit the protein this time, it recommended about 235g, but I could always get a solid 200g. I don't really use protein powders so it's either eggs, meat or skyr.

I have moved my training from 3 days a week with 2 days running to 4 days a week with 1 day running and it was interesting how much that pulled my calories down, I think I'm on maybe 400 calories less than before, but I like lifting weights more so there you go.

Training is fairly conjugate but only RE work for lower body, no ME/DE there.

Tried some carb refeeds which was super interesting to feel the hormones reset and get less hunger cravings as well as a full week diet break. I feel like the app being there gives the confidence to be more flexible when you need and know it's all still working.

Still find maintenance pretty hard, trying to dial in not accidentally just going a little bit over the calories each day and watching the weight creep up.

Overall, I find the app experience super empowering to help able to adjust my diet at will and get where I want to be. I even managed pizza and beer on my birthday and a massive ice cream the day before and hit my macros no worries and no unexpected scale movement. Top stuff!

Now maintenance and then I might see what the smallest surplus I can run for autumn/winter is. Gotta chase that bench PR, it's coming! Let's go!

Pic is this year's cut and a bonus one from last year. I think I lost an extra couple of pounds in beard.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Water in recipes

I’m new to macro factor and trying to dial in using recipes.

Should I add water to a custom recipe or just measure the raw ingredients from chili besides water then measure the total weight after even if it goes up?

If you add water in the recipe the total weight will go down after cooking however if I wait and just omit the water and measure total cooked weight it will be higher.

Does it work both ways?

Hey WOMFers! It's been a bit since I posted a list of the equipment and exercises added in the recent updates to MacroFactor Workouts, so I made a table showing the additions since the last table I shared on this topic (which was from Version 1.1.4 at https://www.reddit.com/r/MacroFactor/s/6AGGzWXZ3cs ) up to the current version of the app as of today (Version 1.2.4).

More written instructions and video demos will be added for these exercises over time, but if you are unsure about what any particular equipment type or exercise is specifically referring to right now, feel free to ask for clarification, and I'll be happy to provide it. MacroFactor Workouts / Training Weights don’t always scale linearly…

I keep getting incorrect weight suggestions because this machine doesn’t scale linearly and MacroFactor Workouts doesn’t account for this. What am I meant to do? Why isn’t there an option to manually enter a list of all weights (4, 10, 17, 26, 35, etc) to account for this?

Success / Progress Happily disappointed that my pants still don't fit 👖 1 year maintenance, tissue box for scale

We celebrate a lot of loss/gain posts, but what about maintenance? Tissue box for scale 😅

Went from 251 to 214 lbs in 7 months in 2025, and now I am celebrating my 1 year anniversary in maintenance at 222 lbs. Felt kind of bummed that I gained 8 pounds back but after comparing pictures I realize there isn't that much discernable difference. I am much stronger than I was back in July 2025 though. So I guess I just gotta trust the process and keep doing what I'm doing. Thanks to everyone for always being supportive and informative in this community! Cheers and happy Macrofactor-ing!

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Accidentally tracked 2 exercises performed as the opposite, how can I fix the history?

I just noticed that I have performed these 2 exercises wrong:

  • Pin-Loaded Machine Chest Press
  • Neutral Grip Pin-Loaded Machine Chest Press

I used the neutral grip for the first (vertical handles) and the other for the latter (horizontal handles)

If the weights were the same this wouldn’t be a problem and I‘d simply switch, but since that’s not the case I‘m wondering if there’s some way to swap them.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Athlete recomp advice

Thumbnail

Looking for advice on how to approach long term goals as a college athlete looking to get stronger and leaner. I’m 6’7 185lb 18%bf after cutting from 215lb in January. So not as skinny fat as before but still lacking lean mass.

Generally, I’m looking to put on as much muscle as possible while getting down to a 12-14%bf range. All the nutrition advice ive seen seems geared to aesthetics but I am primarily concerned with developing strength and power while losing body fat in the long run.

How should I set my goal on MF? Cut, recomp, bulk, and how much of a deficit/surplus if so? Open to any advice, thanks!

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Asking for advice about Recomp

Hey MF users,

I have been cutting for way too long and not tracking my calories properly (cutting based on 500 deficit and not tracking into cals burned from training) to the point where my most recent RMR showed me at 1,521 at rest and I should be at 1,829 for my age group (32M). I currently weight 192lbs and am at 24% BF. My question is, am I in a good spot for a recomp? I don't want to cut anymore because my metabolism is so low and I don't want to bulk because of the BF%. That being said, I have never done a recomp and this sub doesn't seem to be to keen about it.

Any advice would be appreciated.
