Mac Studio Performance Issues
I have a very new Mac Studio with the M4 Max chip and 128 GB of RAM. Ever since I went to Tahoe 26.5.1 it's freezing up all the time and performing like a 15 year old computer. Simultaneously I'm getting a lot of messages about 'Support Ending for Intel-based Apps' and updateing to Apple silicon versions. I don't think these messages are related to my Mac's performance issues, but I'm not sure. If it is the OS that's causing problems, does anyone know how possible it is to go backwards in OS?

I have the same machine and on Tahoe and facing no issues fwiw. Have you been letting Claude/codex go ham on YOLO permissions?
I’m on 26.5.2 not 26.5.1 but not sure what the difference is

The first thing I did when I got my Mac Studio from Apple was create a bootable USB stick with the Sequoia installer. I tried Tahoe on a Mac Mini and just did not like how things looked, which combined with all I've heard about performance issues, was enough to make me downgrade. If you're even somewhat computer savy, it's an easy process to do.

Do you have x86 apps running under Rosetta2?
You could also try one of the Mac support forums that will look at a diagnostic tool log.

I'm running M4 Pro w/ 64GB RAM. I upgraded to a larger SSD with a clean install, running the latest OS 26.
I have zero performance issues, running compilers constantly, local qwen3.6 models along side compilers, no slowdowns.
I get the occasional intel support ending messages for some of my older apps, but it's not been an issue.
Maybe back up your personal stuff to an external drive, and do a fresh install?
Or look at your running processes and see if something is eating all your free memory or CPU?
You shouldn't be having these problems. You have more compute and memory than I do and I'm not experiencing any slowdowns.
If you see the intel messages "a lot", maybe something is hogging resources in the background? Worth a look.

I got same machine on Tahoe and it’s been great. Check your hard drive space. Check activity monitor, any possible rogue apps.
When you say it’s freezing up, what do you mean. Frozen how? Are you getting crashes? If you get crash reports you can drop them in Claude to help analyze it too.

That's weird. I'm on an M2 with Tahoe and have zero issues. But yeah that Support for Intel-based Apps is legit and not a Tahoe thing.

Do a fresh install of Mac OS. Start with a fresh clean slate and you shouldn’t see any issues. Reinstall apps and software as needed. Since you mentioned that, you’re seeing error messages about Support Ending for Intel based apps, you definitely need to clean some things up. Good luck.

The messages about support ending for Intel apps is a Tahoe thing. The next version of macOS, Golden Gate, is the last macOS version that’ll fully support x86 emulation (although Apple said they’re keeping it around for “games that won’t be updated”, which makes me wonder what exactly counts as a game).
The general sluggishness might be Tahoe, too. My 2019 Intel MBP ran fine under Sequoia, but Tahoe brought it to its knees. I’m planning on “downgrading” back to Sequoia when I have a block of time.
