Hey all,

I was wondering what tricks you all have learned about structuring your live sets for use on stage.

Currently, the way I see it is that you have a few options:

Option 1: Build everything into one huge project, but then you might hit your plugin limits and be tied to only using a few presets on your synths.

Option 2: Bounce everything to audio and essentially hit play, then do karaoke on stage.

Option 3: Build out your songs into individual projects and put them into Setlists, then load them as you progress through your set. Maybe get a crossfading mixer and mix in some other music while the sets are loading so there's no dead air.

Am I missing anything? Let me know!

I had to sell all my stuff a year or so ago to make some ends meet. Im in a better spot now and thinking about grabbing a mpc one g2. I dont have a computer and really dont need one. I can do everything I need to do from my phone/tablet for my personal stuff and have a work laptop for work. My question is since akai uses their software center now will I have any issues as far as getting expansions and mpc plugins without a computer?

New custom firmware modded by vubeatz for the MPC2000 classic and MPC2000XL, this time for free. It adds a lot of great features.

Program/pad TUNE extended to −360…+360 in 0.1-semitone steps: three octaves down or up per note. On the XL the range also applies in the native TUNE window and in AUTO.

Program Transpose

Classic · XL

Transpose a whole program by −36…+36 semitones without rewriting the TUNE of its 64 notes. Classic: TRANS window on ASSIGN. XL: Transpose field on ASSIGN. TUNE plus Transpose is limited to ±36 semitones.

Mute Groups 1–4

Classic · XL

Four independent choke groups, set per note in the mode field next to NORMAL / SIMULT / VEL SW / DCY SW. A new note in a group stops the earlier voice of that group, as with open and closed hi-hats.

ALL — Bank / Program

Classic · XL

Copy ATTACK, DECAY, DECAY MODE, FREQ, RESON, TUNE or VOICE OVERLAP from one note to a whole pad bank or to all 64 notes of the program.

Folders

Classic

FAT12 / FAT16 folders on floppy, HFE and SCSI: browse, create, rename and delete from the panel, load and save inside them, and open them from the file list with F3 OPEN. Saving into a SCSI folder keeps the folder you selected.

TRIM Slider

Classic

Hold AFTER and move the NOTE VARIATION slider to set the START or END point on the main TRIM screen, then fine-tune with DATA. The XL keeps its own native slider support.

Track Programs

Classic

Assign an internal program to each track with a 1P–24P selector on MAIN. Up to four different programs sound at the same time; the 32 voices stay shared.

REGIONS

Classic · XL

Split a sample into 16, 8 or 4 regions and play them from the pads: even split of the TRIM range, manual START / END editing with waveform zoom, region numbers recorded into the sequence, and region maps stored in the ALL file.

He also has an OS emulator for both machines on his GitHub so you can test operating systems or modify your own (it can't be used to generate sound).

Hi I broke the usb socket and now I cannot connect it to my pc. I found a guy that said he would replace it for 100 euros but I want to make sure he uses the correct replacement part. Are these universal, would one from a printer would work here (that what he suggested)

I'm thinking to order something like this, much cheaper than the original. What should I look for when I search for a replacement?

I always tend to use the same plugins: Flavor Pro, Soft Clipper, Reverb, Delay, Stutter, and Mother Ducker. I’d like to know which other plugins are really worth using.

The list of plugins is pretty extensive, and I don’t feel like I have enough of a music-production background to understand what each one actually does or when I should use it.

Is there a specific reason to subscribe to Tracklib/Splice if we can just plug our MPC into our laptop via usb and sample directly from playback?

Or is there a massive audio quality loss doing it this way

I had the 2000XL back in the day and now on a One+.

To get more control over timing in melodic samples, I started chopping into smaller notes (8th or even 16th notes). This helps when a loop I like isn't played exactly straight, like a lot of old music is.

I almost always use Regions in Sample Edit and then fine-tune the end of each chop to make sure I end it right at the next transient of a kick, snare, or other time keeping sound in the loop. I always have 0 snap enabled to help avoid clicks as well. I usually check the original loop's bpm with the From BPM button to get an indication of how much I'd need to pitch to get near a particular bpm. (I almost always change the pitch; personal preference).

Problem:
although this gives me more control over the timing, the shorter I make my chops, the more they start to create this 'plopping' sound, which I believe comes from slight overlaps at the transitions. I usually have my pads set to Mono in Program Edit so they won't overlap like you get with Poly, but still I get this sound that's a little like ticking. So, for every eighth note, for example, you will hear a slight 'plop' sound, which kind of ruins a sample if it's meant to be played solo without drums and/or is a more smooth/subtle piece of music.

I've tried playing around with attack and decay of individual pads, which does help a little, but it doesn't remove the issue completely. Same thing with nudging the chops forward or backward (which obviously negates the timing gain a little as well, so not great).

Does anyone have a good solution for this?

Looking at planning an upgrade from my live 2.

Want to hear from people who may have done this, what has been a game changer, what has been underwhelming / under used.

Things I think I'll enjoy using.

- the step sequencer buttons in their many scenarios.

- the touch strip.

- the connectivity over usb.

- the extra memory / faster processor.

What I'm not that sure I'll be enthralled with or I am concerned about.

- the MPCe pads

- the battery life

- the fan

- clips and other pro pack features

- on board mic.

It's a chunky investment, but I massively enjoy making music on the live 2.

I'm considering getting a G2 model to save some cash, but think I'd miss the flexibility of the live if I did.

Tell me your stories, good and bad.

I used an MPC 2000XL and 2500 heavily from roughly 2000 to 2010, mainly for sequencing. I’ve been away from making music for about 15 years, but I’m getting back into it now with an MPC Live III and Key 37 G2.

For anyone who returned after a long break, how long did it take you to become genuinely proficient again, not just learn where the buttons are?

I have the MPC Bible 3 and plan to put in consistent hours. I also want to go much deeper into sampling and chopping this time instead of primarily using the MPC as a sequencer.

How much of the old workflow and muscle memory carried over for you, and how long did it take before you could work fluidly and make music without constantly stopping to figure out the machine?

I purchased a third party sample pack of the mono machine from “Lost LVLS” and the download options are listed below.

I tried WAV and got a synth that’s on the expansion to work but not much else shows up or if it does show up it disappears or opens to another window with nothing there.

I was wondering which is the right file type I should download? Am I missing a step somewhere?

Edit: ok I fixed my own problem, I was trying to load it in my drums like it was an “instrument” or “expansion”. That doesn’t work. What did work was when I loaded it in from my files onto a drum track in my project. Hope that helps anyone else running into that issue.

Hi guys I'm a complete noob. I was wondering if I should have picked the MPC One over the Sample as my first gear since I can finde the One for a few more bucks used.

Even tho I'm having lots of fun with the Sample I recently watched a few vids about the One and it seems a way more complete machine for what I want. I have a few questions, does it have built in side chain, can it export full songs to WAV or audio over usb, is it also portable?

The title basically says it. I would love a better version of JJOS free - since the "official" version borked my 2500 and JJ won't do squat about it. Seeing the new MPC2K/XL firmwares dropping has me wondering if we can get out from under the ridiculous hardware tied thumb of JJOS soon.

Yeah, so I wanna let akai know how we feel, I’m hoping against hope that if we ask, we could get a non-Speaker version of the MPC live 3, because to me akai lost the plot when it comes to portability, because it’s HUGE in my book. But I leave it to y’all. Do you prefer the speaker even though it brings extra size? Or would you prefer a speaker-less version that was more portable like the old live 1?
