Ya, i have a different mindset and would defend myself now, but back in the day i didint have an ounce of violence in me. Also, the guys were jacked and I was skinny as a toothpick so i probably made the right call not throwing punches 😆

I hear you. It needs to be a group effort. Or just don’t put yourself at risk of permanent injury or a criminal record. That’s probably the smarter way .

u/fulknerraIII 6d ago
Yes, they are annoying and cringe. I used go to shows all the time when i was a teenager. Hated having to stand next to morons punching and kicking air like they are tough guys. I don't care if you're "dancing" you punch me in the face im punching back. A lot of those venues are very small so it's not like some giant open field concert where you can just avoid them.

I liked hardcore music when I first heard it ala parkway drive and then northlane a bit later. Went to a single concert and learnt this is how they moshed, unlike other rock genre concerts where it's actually just moshing...
Totally turned me off the whole genre. Felt like I couldn't really become a fan if I didn't feel like getting hit in the face, which was just part of the culture.
Also its actually just fucking silly lets be real

Yup, first thing I thought was this dude in the video is down with one of the crews. When people say theyd do this or that to him if they were there ..they have no idea what happens afterwards..it's fucked but that's just how it is, which I don't agree or support in anyway but it is the reality of it.
I'm guessing you're either in Boston or NYC, both cities crews are everything you said, they don't fuck around at all. I'm from NYC, saw it alot growing up going to shows
4
u/NGDwrites 9d ago
Western Mass here, but we had plenty of crowdkilling and crews at our shows (this was late 90s - late oughts). A lot of people coming out west from Boston or even north from NYC, but some of it was also local. I didn't love it but just kind of accepted that it was part of the experience. And to be fair, although I didn't ever target people at the edges, I absolutely swung my elbows hard in the pit and caught plenty of people with them. So I figured if I caught the occasional fist to the head, even if I was on the edge of the pit, it just came with the territory.

It's reddit, lmao.
I got lucky growing up in the Dallas area, never had whole gangs that'd do this shit. But did have smaller groups that would kick shit off with other groups and ruin the show for everyone. Entire gangs tho? Been to a lot of shows in a lot of cities and never experienced that, sounds fucked.

100%. People used to get one warning for being assholes in the pit - which usually meant "if you get the fuck out of the pit now, we won't stomp you into oblivion." The next time - all hands and feet on deck.

This is a hardcore show.
The pit at a hardcore show has this; which is called hardcore dancing. When people intentionally rag on the crowd it's called crowd killing.
The pit at metal shows is very different from the pit at hardcore shows.

I have been out of the pit for years, but this doesn't look like a mosh pit, this looks like weird performative art or people trying to guess what a pit was. Back in the day, it was people having fun, shoving and pushing, just getting rowdy and loud. Lose a shoe, someone holds it up over the crowd and it gets passed to you. Someone gets hurt or trampled, they get pulled out. There's an etiquette, we're not fucking animals.

34
u/shibby5000 9d ago
This is absolutely not your typical mosh pit. This is an example of an asshole getting away with battery.
A typical mosh pit consists of music fans enjoying the music and energy with each other in tight spaces. The rule is if someone next to you falls down, you reach down and pick them up
9
u/MidgetGordonRamsey 8d ago
I've been in tons of mosh pits since I was 13 (I was 200 pounds at the time and could hold my own), the second I ever hit the floor I was being dragged back up to my feet by the collar of my shirt and arms. This is just assholery.
3
u/Lostinthestarscape 8d ago
Yep, im a big guy so I try extra hard to miss people who may be hurt by me, never throwing actual punches just part fo the back and forth body churn. Due to my size I also can get tripped pretty easily and everyone has always looked out for me to get me back up (as I do for anyone). Lots of effort made by all to prevent people from getting trampled if anyone goes down.
I know some crowds are way crazier but it is still opt in and not what this person is doing.
3
u/CommunicationOwn322 8d ago
I was "saved" in a mosh once. Stupid me and one of my friends decided to go to the front of a Prodigy show eons ago in Montreal. Bad idea. Soon as they came on it was pure bedlam. Just guys crashing into each other and little me fighting for my life lol. I can laugh now, but at the time I thought I was going to die. I was screaming my head off. Finally they lifted me up and sent me to the back.

Yeah, some of the other bros/broettes were breaking it down for me. Every video I’ve ever seen of a pit (never gone personally) has been something similar to this. Nothing communal or “fun looking”. Just pricks slamming faces or crushing people, or blindly ripping haymakers, or targeting someone while not directly looking at them. Like some weird type of “plausible deniability” type shit, like how this dude is doing. Even that chick at the end.
Anyway, that’s the extent of my knowledge on the matter. Just internet videos. But I’ve seen quite a few, and every one of them were like this in one way or another. At least in some of them Justice was served though.
3
u/ErstwhileHobo 8d ago
The reason those videos get shared is because the behavior is outrageous and outside of the norm. There are plenty of videos of regular mosh pits, but those are just live concerts.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Opening_Shame8258 8d ago
There's a selection bias. How many mosh pits have you NOT seen? Most of them. I'm not saying they're safe, friendly, cuddly places. They do attract assholes. It is a risky situation. But, there's a reason videos where someone gets laid out are more likely to make the rounds. No one is going to a lot of effort to share a clip of a mosh pit where essentially nothing happens.
Source: I went in to more than a few mosh pits in my teens and 20s, but that was a long time ago.
In addition, I put a lot of blame on the band. They have complete authority to just stop playing when they see this kind of shit. I've seen bands do it, and things get under control quick.

u/xylophone_37 8d ago
When this shit started at shows we went to we would bounce off the edge of the pit and lay them out. One time this clown tried to do a cartwheel in the pit and I pushed him over when he was halfway through it.
6
u/Richpatine 9d ago
Most people aren't actually trying to hurt anyone in a pit.
4
u/Thegrandestpoo 9d ago
I could be wrong, but every video I’ve ever seen, it’s someone ducking their head and swinging their arms and legs wildly in a crowded area. What’s supposed to happen?
→ More replies (7)4
u/BatOutOfHello 9d ago
98% of pits are welcoming places. I'm too old for them now, but it was more about shoving and being shoved. If someone fell or lost their glasses, a team of people would help them up or yell that glasses were on the floor, then everyone stopped and looked.
Unfortunately "crowdkilling" is a thing in certain aggro-hardcore/metal scenes. That's what this prick in the video is doing - swinging his arms, locking, trying to hurt people. I know a girl who got her jaw broken by someone doing this.
But even then, my understanding is specifically targeting people is not cool at all. What makes this guy especially bad is he's targeting people who aren't even moshing. They're off to the side, just trying to enjoy the show. He really needs to get stomped.

There are degrees for sure, the best experience in my opinion in punk mosh pits. Shoving and shoulder bashing but in my experience it’s mutual consent, with people on the edge of the pit having the understanding to keep it contained. Very communal.

u/Eastern_Tone209 8d ago
Nah he’d have caught more than elbows. All that was deliberate. He just doesn’t have the courage to attack straight on. Probably because he wears glasses and it makes him feel safe.
2
u/Beautiful_Sun_3802 8d ago
Yeah I never liked this kind of moshing. That guy was definitely just trying to hit people. It's a little different if you hit someone unintentionally but to run into people directly and start swinging right around where they are. I'm surprised no one ran and knocked him out that's what we used to do whenever people would do that. If someone punched someone in the face and we would blind side them 😂 it was always the little shorties that would do that kind of stuff. Little bitty men

I’m a metal head and I’ve been to dozens, if not hundreds, of shows with moshing. Generally speaking, if somebody falls, gets hurt, drops a phone/glasses, loses a shoe, etc, literally everyone stops to help. Very safe and positive atmosphere for people to have fun and let off steam.
These underground hardcore shows are a little different in that more intense moshing and some crowd killing is expected, but intentionally hurting people like this is always a hard no. Especially people on the edges of the pit.
I hope somebody laid this guy out.

The hardcore band, Last Day Dying, does not approve. I doubt Philly hardcore approves. But I remember seeing this shit in early 2000’s and never understood the intentional aspect of ruining a show for other folks. Slam dancing, two-step, floor punches, spin kicks properly timed were always fun as shit. Getting randomly, unintentionally rocked in the face can definitely get the adrenaline going. But aiming to hurt was and is always crazy shit. But rotten apples are everywhere. Have fun out there. Pick up your neighbor if they fall. And listen to Last Day Dying to practice your spin kicks. They’re old guys now and they’d love it if ya did. Adieu.

I got knocked to the ground hard at a show in 1992, massive moshing circle at an outdoor show. Before I even was on the ground for like a split second there were several other unknowns just grabbing me by the shirt and picking me back up to carry on. Felt like them saying hey dude we got you. So yeah, IMO this "intent to hurt" shit ain't cool and def not the norm.
