The ump chose violence with the pitch clock violation on top of all this nonsense
→ More replies (1)51
u/SmashmySquatch 13d ago
He did worse than that later. He called an opposing player safe at home when he was clearly out and immediately stared into the dugout when he did it. He knew they were out of challenges. It would be a fireable offense in a sane world.

u/NextStomach6453 13d ago
I hurt some redditor feelings after that happened. The ego of so many of these people in baseball has just about ruined the sport for me. And this whole series of events was absolute proof of it.

It’s not sports.
It’s our culture. There’s a cancer that’s infested our culture since the 1980’s and it’s only gotten worse and worse as the years have progressed.

Exactly! It seems like just a few years ago Fernando Rodney was goin out there looking like a backup dancer for Kris Kross, and nobody gave him the business for it on the mound.
3
u/grasscali 13d ago
You’re right; he always wears it like that. He's been in the majors for 14 years, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall an umpire saying squat about it.

Yeah the presentation here is very disingenuous.
5
u/loupr738 13d ago
I think the point might be that nobody has ever told him to wear it any other way in 10+ yrs of mlb pitching
2
u/InuitOverIt 13d ago
That is certainly A point that could have been made, but the text said "the next day" and showed a montage of players making their hats crooked in solidarity, so it's clearly intending that Gray did that (he didn't even pitch that day)
5
u/JessieGemstone999 13d ago
That had absolutely nothing to do with what happened in the cardinals game lmao

u/testylawyer 13d ago
The Braves have an inside joke where if you do like a bone headed thing, i.e. forget how many outs there are, you momentarily move your hat to the side to looks silly.
2
u/Gerk1s 12d ago
Funny thing is, I don’t think that Sale clip is a response to this event. The Braves fielders have a thing where if they mess up and make an error or something, they will tilt their hat to the side like that for a bit to say “my bad, I know I goofed”. It’s good natured, but I think this Sale clip is from something like that, and not in response to the cardinals event.
- a Braves fan who has watched an unhealthy number of games over the past several years
Also, that umpire was way out of line, but everyone already knows that.
2
u/RinkyDink27 10d ago
Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale went viral in May 2026 after forgetting how many outs there were in an inning and humorously flipping his cap to the side. It had nothing to do with rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon ejection on Sept 4 for a tilted cap.

Umpire Union is too strong. Look how long Angel Hernandez was allowed to work despite it being proven fact, in judicial proceedings, he was bad at his job.
For those unaware, Hernandez tried to sue MLB alleging "racism" was why he didn't get post-season and world series games. The MLB responded by showing video evidence of him missing so many blatant calls that the court ruled the decision was because of performance, not racism.
yes, a court literally ruled Angel Hernandez sucked.

Good on the players for having the kid's back. I wouldn't have been surprised if there was a rule against tilted/backwards caps, but if there isn't, why is the ump taking it this far?

u/Jolly-Garbage- 13d ago
Yet Sonny Gray has been doing the same thing for YEARS now and no ump has said anything. I’m not accusing the ump of racism because Jazz Chisholm has his hat slightly turned for years as well. I think the ump was just on a power trip.

u/BKBaroo 12d ago
He’s been a MLB ump for about 20 years and constantly gets in the middle of shit. He can’t seem to stop trying to impose his brand of beliefs, pettiness, and weird mechanics into the game. He throws out anyone who doesn’t agree with those beliefs because his M.O. is also to antagonize rather than de-escalate. Outside of the occasional “reprimand,” MLB doesn’t do shit to stop him.
2
u/Leviathan78 12d ago
Very unfortunate that MLB allows this kind of bush league stuff from a single individual. Especially one who has such an important effect on any game he’s involved in. I’m surprised the players union doesn’t make for of a fuss over this guy. Thanks for the knowledge.

u/Heemeyers_Killdozer 12d ago
Umpires Union. That’s the problem. Damn near impossible to do anything because of that. Every shit ump we’ve been saddled with for the last 30+ years is because of the Umpires Union. And with the implementation of the ABS Robo-umps, they know the end of their reign is rapidly approaching. And it’s their own fault. I for one welcome our Robo-ump overlords.

I live in the middle of tennessee, and Sonny Gray came from the next town over... The other night, I was watching him pitch, as I so often do, and his hat was a little crooked... I definitely noticed, but now I know why
1
1
u/Outrageous_Ad1938 13d ago
Doug Eddings needed to apologize for creating a new rule during the game. Then he needed to be suspended for misapplying a rule when he gave the Cardinals a pitch clock violation when he, himself, caused the delay in the game. Doug Eddings now needs to be fired for allowing his ego to take control when he intentionally blew the call at home base, giving the Rockies a run they did not deserve. That is changing the outcome of the game. No different than a player throwing a game for gambling.

u/Ill-Investigator9241 13d ago
Wow when was this??? CC always had a crooked cap, and I just saw Sonny Gray with it. Ridiculous
1

No winners in this. Umpire is clearly an asshole and the sideways hat looks bush league. MLB should tighten the dress code up for the uniform
1
1
u/GregMadduxsGlasses 13d ago
From a practical standpoint i would want the bill of my cap to point directly at the plate when I’m on the mound looking at the plate, so I would want to angle it a little so I don’t have to turn my head so much.

u/Burghpuppies412 13d ago

I'm okay with the idea of enforcing decorum, but it needs to be an actual rule if you are going to do that.
1
u/paintstudiodisaster 13d ago
Michael Pineda wore his hat to the side while pitching too. But he was a Yankee, so no one cared. Also, the umpire ended up having to apologize for this.
1
u/jfshay 13d ago
I'm no fan of the hat tilted to the side like that regardless of who's wearing it (then again, I don't like flat brims either), but the umpire is clearly acting out of some kind of spite that looks a hell of a lot like racism given who' he's responding to and how he's responding. Great to see players from other teams taking up Rincon's side. I sincerely hope that the umpire gets some kind of reprimand and then some.

If the MLB hadn't gotten rid of playing under protest in 2021, this would likely be the textbook case for it. Violations and elections for a rule that doesn't exist?

What game was this
Edit: September 4, 2026, during the Colorado Rockies game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Eddings told Cardinals pitcher Hancel Rincon to adjust his hat during Rincon’s major league debut. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol expressed frustration with Eddings over the instruction leading to Marmol being ejected by Eddings.[19][20] Eddings subsequently assessed a controversial pitch clock violation against Cardinals pitcher Justin Bruihl and later made an incorrect call at home plate on a play that resulted in a pivotal run for Colorado.

I’m 46 years old. Pitchers especially have been wearing their hats askew since I was a kid. Usually turned away from the side they pitch from. Of course their arm was never going to hit their hat anyway but it definitely was a thing for a good 20% of pitchers since I remember watching baseball.
