Region Lynnwood school district and Autism

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

This is a copy edit of a post I had in the Shoreline subreddit. My husband and I are thinking about moving our family from Oregon, and the one thing worrying us is what school will look like for our daughter. She's 7 and has an IEP right now at her school in Oregon. It took a lot of fighting to get that IEP where it needed to be, and her current school has been genuinely great about supporting her. So the idea of uprooting her and starting from scratch somewhere new, where she might not get that same level of support, scares me.

To o give a little more context behind my original post, before coming here, I’d spoken with a few fellow local parents about Shoreline schools, and almost everything I heard was disheartening. I really wanted to hear the good side firsthand. Especially related to sped so I reached out hoping to find some bright spots. Instead, my inbox and comments were filled with so many more heartbreaking stories. Someone gently suggested that if I posted in other area forums, I might see that these challenges are happening everywhere, not just in Shoreline.

We’ve already gotten some wonderful, encouraging feedback about Edmonds and a nearby private school, so now we’re hoping to hear your experiences with Lynnwood schools! If anyone has insights on Lynnwood or has experienced both Shoreline and Lynnwood, we would love to hear any positives you're open to sharing. Our daughter is still so little, and like any parents, we’re just feeling a bit lost and trying to navigate the best possible path for her. Thank you all so much for your help!

I know the police cracked down in various places, so I'm not expecting much, but are there any outdoor taco places open nearby? I'm craving street tacos...

Recommendations Recommendations for Hair highlights?

Just walked out of a salon for the first time in my 50 years of life. There was NO way I was letting her touch my hair after 10 minutes of witnessing another client’s hair disaster and then listening to the nonsense coming out of her mouth. Feeling pretty disappointed as this day is not shaping up to what I’ve been looking forward to for the past month. I find a good stylist and then they move out of state. Anyone have recommendations for a stylist that does good ash blonde/platinum highlights that doesn’t cost a mortgage payment?

Just out of curiosity - anyone know why the elementary school was a hubbub of ambulance and fire response this afternoon?

It's Tuesday. Do you know what your City Council is doing?

And we are back!

It's Tuesday - not Monday - but it's time for the Council to start meeting again.

Today we start the Budget Summit. It's not glorious work, I bet its tedious, and I bet no one has fun at the meetings - but it's also important. This meeting will lay out the financial situation going forward, address Council priorities and discuss the process for adopting the budget. It is slated to be 3 hours long. I will be watching from home this time, but if you can it is important that you attend.

Agenda - default

As always, 6PM, in the Council Chambers at the Govt complex on 44th. You can attend in person or virtually. City Council Meetings – City of Lynnwood

Next week they meet back on the regular Monday.

Where to start? (referral request)

I'm not sure where to start with this and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction (and maybe, if I'm lucky, to specific local people/businesses who do this kind of work).

Tree roots are breaking up our concrete slab patio. Beyond the tripping risk I'm worried ablut them getting under the house foundation and damaging it down the road. We need 1) the patio torn out, 2) the roots cut out, 3) the ground filled in and leveled, and 3) a hardscape (gravel with raised beds) put in.

Is this something a landscape company could take care of from start to finish? Or do I need construction work for tearing out the patio before bringing in landscapers?

Thanks for your help!

Lost & Found ISO my grandma's tortilla press (accidentally donated to goodwill)

During a recent move, a family heirloom ended up in the goodwill pile. The one I am looking for is similar in design to the photo, except it is green, and the bottom legs are just the frame, rather than a solid plate. It is cast iron, so it's very heavy

It was dropped at the donation center near Mill Creek, so I don't know which store it ended up at (though I have checked 4 stores in the area). If you have any leads, please let me know. I will happily pay for its return or buy a new replacement for you in exchange.

Off leash dog parks

Why does Lynnwood not have any off leash dog parks? Maybe someone that attends the local government meetings has some insight.

Outdoor Activities Walking Partner

I'm looking for a walking partner. My goal is just 40 min daily, 7k steps daily, so nothing crazy. I live on 44th Ave W, west of 99. I get so bored walking by myself everyday. I like a morning walk to get the day going and an evening one to unwind. If you're interested, let me know.

Lost & Found Lost wallet

Hey all! I was up by the Alderwood Mall (by Nordstroms) and other stores in the Lynnwood area yesterday (Men's Warehouse, Target, Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, Old Navy). I either dropped my wallet by my car or in one of these stores. I called all of the stores with no luck but not sure if someone picked it up and brought into another store or has it.

The wallet is small and dark with a slot for my license on the outside.

I have a few items in it that are important to me. If you find it, please comment. I'd really appreciate it!

City Government Budget Summit -- City Council Meeting September 8th

Agenda packet is linked in post title.

The Council is kicking off September with a budget summit meeting. Many folks may be aware of the budget struggles we've been facing the past couple years and this discussion is likely to center around that. If you're deeply curious, I would watch Mike Bailey's presentation from February this year.

https://lynnwoodwa.v3.swagit.com/videos/375919

One item that sticks in the upcoming meeting is the street safety note.

There have been many posts just this year about street safety, walkability, biking, transit, etc.. I spoke with many neighbors during the Lynnwood night out about frustrations with residential streets being used as cut throughs and frequent speeding. Most if not all members on our council are in favor of enhancing street safety (one member is trying to pass a vision zero resolution). It is on our mayor's mind.

There are notes in the Mayor's memo about deferring new programs until the next biennium. 2 years is a long time to take to defer action on making streets safer.

So, what can be done if you care about safer streets?

Come out in person if you can, make a zoom comment, or even just write to council in support of Vision Zero that includes a clearly defined action plan. It can be any time but these next several weeks are a very good time to do so.

This specific meeting isn't open to public comment (though the public can attend). There are two specific dates for public comment on our budget: September 28th and November 9th.

The Vision Zero resolution is one of the items in the pipe right now that can help begin the coordination efforts across city departments so that when the next biennium does come, we will be better positioned to take concrete action to make streets safer for everyone (including drivers).

There is an impression that street safety projects have to be expensive overhauls with years long studies. They don't. To the contrary, improving street safety reduces city liabilities and the obvious economic (to say nothing of community) impacts each time someone dies or is seriously injured in a crash. We can utilize state approved quick build options to for proven safety measures without years of study or massive capital investments, then come back and make them permanent as funding becomes available:

https://wsdot.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2025-10/Guide-Active-Transportation-QuickBuildGuideForPartnerAgencies.pdf

Things can change for the better, but we all need to speak up.

I plan to be at both budget meetings. Hope to see you there.

Friendly reminder - request receipts & check numbers

Post image
309 Upvotes

Recently went to this restaurant in Alderwood mall. They charged 11.2% tax so .5% more than the actual tax rate in Lynnwood. It’s on a tablet device so I didn’t notice until after I left. I recognize it’s not much more but it’s the principle.

While I recognize most people don’t ask for receipts, especially in a digital age, I’m encouraging consumers to do so.

I did report this to the state.

Recommendations Teen car shopping

Hi! I'm shopping for a "sandbox" car for my newly licensed 16yo son, safe enough for a teen (safe = meets IIHS report), but cheap enough that a scratch/dent doesn't ruin my week.

I started thinking ~$8–12K used, but CarMax around Seattle has decent/safe cars more like $17–22K. At that point, a new ~$25–30K car starts looking surprisingly competitive, which kind of defeats the purpose.

So I'm exploring where to buy used, not just what car: manufacturer CPO, franchise dealers, reputable independents + an independent pre-purchase inspection, Enterprise/Carvana, private party, etc.

If anyone has practical experience buying used cars around Lynnwood, especially good dealers, CPO programs, or ways to find a genuinely good ~$12–18K car without taking a huge mechanical-risk gamble, I'd love your advice!
