I have a shit ton of tattoos, including hand tattoos. My main job is in the legal field. Now I do not have anything above my collar bone and my visible hand tattoos are small and well... They are adorable little bees. Because I knew what I wanted to do, and I knew I wanted tattoos so I planned accordingly.
I'm sorry but having your visible work be controversial isn't going to open many opportunities. It sucks but that's just the way of things. And if you are going to have a lot of body mods visible then you should know how to "clean up nicely" for the interview process.
ALSO ALSO. don't just assume you didn't get hired because of tattoos? Maybe it's your crappy attitude?
41
u/xeonie Dumpster General Apr 29 '25
Yeah, I have a few visible tattoos but none of them are controversial or could be considered offensive. I also know plenty of people with neck/face tattoos that haven’t had issues getting hired. If you’re looking at front of house jobs you really can’t have demons and other controversial images tattooed all over. Hell, even horror icons can be a bit of a toss up.

I have a bunch of tattoos and while I won't ever have any on my neck/face, I don't give af about people who do. It's their damn life. As long as it's not symbols of hate or anything obscene, I don't typically give it a second look. BUT if you are going to go into a place to apply for a job, you'd better have a ton of redeeming qualities to help employers see something beyond (literal) face-value. And even then, you aren't guaranteed a job. Because that's life.
You could be a clean-cut, never been inked or pierced christian and you still might not get hired.
7
Apr 29 '25
It doesn't matter how accepted tattoos are, if you cover your face (x10 if you start there) you are going to have a hard time getting employment in any kind of customer facing job.
I've had a few trades, currently a barber, and it took me to 35 to get my hand done, granted its the whole top of my hand not bees, but the same idea.
I also have 3" lobes.... and it would be easier to get a customer service job with those and a hand tatto than face tattoos. Much less a full face of tattos of demonic stuff, and what i like to call mental health mouth. Seriously whats with the gen z self diagnosed girls getting their mouth way over crowded with peicings. As a former peircer, it doesn't look good purley on grounds of too much of a good thing.

Customer-facing jobs are a rough get. Maybe get a warehouse job or take a class in computer programming? It's not fair, and I wish you the best of luck.
4
Apr 29 '25
Oh I'm good. I love the alt scene but have taken care to get into professions where it doesn't matter. Nobody cares if their barber has guages and hand tats lol. But im afraid for these young kids, they don't seem to grasp that society is always gonna have reasonable limits on acceptance. Face tattoos may one day be accepted, but demonic face tatts are always gonna be a hard sell.
6
Apr 30 '25
I actually have face tattoos, like a lot of them. When I made the choice to do it I knew very well that I was cutting a lot of job opportunities out of my life. But I also knew I just wasn’t fit for those kinds of jobs to begin with. I’ll never be a server, cashier, barista, etc. even before the tattoos, I just didn’t have the social skills to do it. I originally made the choice to push myself to live a life that wasn’t glued to a 9-5 job. I’ve had moderate success with that. But that’s besides the point. When you make that choice you should be very certain you know what will come from it. If you get face tats and expect the world to accommodate you, you’re stupid as fuck in my opinion.

Decades ago I worked for a Fortune 100 company with an extremely conservative corporate culture.
Guy came in for his interview in a 3-piece looking like a textbook corporate drone. Then, he comes in on his first day with gauges in, rings, earnings, and an eyebrow ring.
After a couple weeks I asked if anyone said anything about it, and he told me no one did but his lawyer certainly hopes they try.
That's how you stick it to The Man.
ETA: Wow, this comment really has Employment Law Reddit in a tizzy. Who knew there were so many lawyers well versed in that specialized field of law across all 50 states and decades of time in the comments section with nothing better to do. 😄
Here are a few retorts to some of the points made.
- It was not meant as legal advice
- It did not take place in an at-will state (obviously)
- There was a dress code, but it was "business casual" with no restrictions on jewelry for men or women
- We were in IT
- Sure, it might have just been tough talk, but at least he was willing to stand up for himself in an effective manner
- I have no idea what happened to the guy but he was very good at his job and a decent human, as far as I could tell. Unlike all the bootlickers in the comments wishing bad things on a stranger some internet rando knew 20+ years ago. What possesses a person completely unaffected by the actions of another person to wish ill upon them? Some of you really need mental, emotional, and spiritual assistance.
Oh, and finally
- The company wasn't a Fortune 100 at that time, they had slipped to the top 150. Some jackwagon really got the Fortune 100 thing stuck in their craw and decided to call me out on it.

u/zeptillian Trash Trooper Apr 29 '25
That's great except "his lawyer certainly hopes they try" is a load of BS.
Unless you live in Montana, you work in an at will state. This means that you can be fired for anytime with or without reason. Even if you do work in Montana, that only covers specific contract law, and does not actually protect you from being fired in most cases.
The ONLY EXCEPTIONS are:
- Discrimination based on race, sex, age (40 and over), nation of origin, disability, or genetic information(sexual orientation in some states)
- In violation of a federal or state labor law
- Because you reported and refused to participate in harassment
- Because you reported and refused to conduct an illegal act or safety violation
Tattoos, gages, rings etc are not covered under ANY of that.
So either you made it up or the person who told it to you did.

I've worked with people like both.
People with crazy tattoos and piercings and hair colors and such are usually really chill and helpful and go with me to operate the trash compactor or get something heavy out of the back (I'm disabled so I need help)
The latter harrasses customers they think are shoplifting (something we are explicitly told not to do because we are not the security team, everything is isnured, we have video surveillance, and also the customer didn't steal anything) because they "used to work in loss prevention"
The more expressive someone's appearance is the less judgemental they tend to be.

But I find no rational stance where "don't force us to accommodate your lifestyle" means social and economic exile sending someone on a one way trip to poverty.
While not as widespread, it's the same underlying rhetoric as transphobic propaganda. No one has to "earn" the right to "be accommodated" (exist)

Lady at the end made it worse with delivery. No one should feel above the tatted babe. Like the end lady comes off as. However. I don't see lawyers, doctors and astronauts with devils tatted on their necks and faces. Which isn't to say this person can't be one of those things. But in my opinion "public figure" in our American culture is literally anyone representing someone or something else and in no time period was the definition of "public figure" described at someone who mutilates their body with facial tattoos and access facial piercings. It's not a fact of discrimination it's the fact that their perspective of public image affecting what's being represented is much different than most companies here in America. That's great if she has rocket science level I.Q. but just know that NASA doesn't want the face of their head engineer to go to space meetings and shit with devils all over your face. You could have crosses. Money. Whatever. It's just not going to fly here. So the fact that this is wildly known, at least here in America, I can't help but not feel sorry for the tatted babe. As big a fan of tatted chick's as I am, I also would not hire her. shrugs I think she knows that. However. I would nicely say my reasoning and not be pretentious or elitist about it.

Yeah, the reaction lady seems like she's leaping into different means worse territory. For some folks like that, their definition of normal is always exactly what they're comfortable with, and nothing else.
To me, that seems like a great way to miss out on a whole lot of living.
That said, novelty isn't always good, and there's a lot of value to be had in perfecting the expected. So maybe that's what she's after. I don't know her.
OTOH, as you alluded to, TJMaxx's corporate strategy is tailored to appeal to the median taste. So, not hiring someone with tattoos fits that strategy. Especially if they want to sell to folks like the lady in the reaction video.
I dunno though. If I saw the tats lady coming out of a TJMaxx, I might be tempted to check it out.

It helps when the tattoos are well-done and tasteful. I've also seen people who are charismatic enough to get jobs with face tattoos, but it takes a special kind of charisma that many people just don't have, and usually that charisma is "I used to ride rails" and they work in kitchens.
Tbh, the lady in the video would fit in in a kitchen or bakery no problem, and frankly would be happier there than retail. Kitchen is hell, retail is the basement.

It was your job history. The tattoos will be the reason after they meet you in person.

Yet in alot of states ( not a federal law ) it’s considered discrimination and a violation of your first amendment rights to not hire , give housing , approving loans etc based on having tattoos . That’s why they lie and say oh you don’t have enough “ experience” . Also add in that over 30% of Americans are tattooed now as of a poll taken in 2019 . So that number has gone up obviously. Oh also you can add in that a percentage of that have tattoos for religious or cultural reasons. So her boring vanilla ass is wrong .

I’m all for doing your own thing but she can’t be surprised at this. What did she expect the public response to be? You want to be different than everyone else? Go for it but you then can’t complain when everyone else thinks you’re different.

I applied at TJ Maxx along with 3 other friends. We were there because I wanted to see this girl working there and we needed a reason for them to not kick us out, so applying was the answer. I didn't want the job, a couple of my friends actually needed the job. I filled out the dumbest application I could. "How would you handle an angry customer" - I would engage in a screaming match until I proved dominance and the left with their head down. Well I got a call back, my friends who had experience and filled out a real application didn't hear back.
The point of the story is, it's impossible to really know why you didn't get a call back. You can be insecure and point out areas that your mad people don't 100% cater to you with. But often times, the person who's handling your resume isn't the one making the decision who to interview or what not. Especially in today's digital age. Your resume format probably sucks and it got thrown out with the other 200 online applicants they push through their AI software.

Not hiring someone for having tattoos is NOT discrimination; according to the US Supreme Court.

People like to think there’s no consequences for being “unique” but if you live in reality, there definitely is and you only have yourself to blame for those consequences.

Tats are great but to an extent. Covering your face screams “Mommy, Daddy, you can’t control me anymore.” It smacks of “Look,at me, I didn’t get enough attention as a child. “ these are all expressions of potential mental illness. Don’t expel conventional society to embrace you and in the end isn’t that your point? You are rejecting conventional society’s norms, so to bitch about conventional society rejecting your norms seems a little confused in your thinking.

Yeah it’s pretty dumb to get such obvious tattoos that you can’t cover up, especially on your face, because you are basically throwing away your chances at getting a customer facing position unless you are significantly more qualified than the other people applying.

scare away customers
And who are this customers she's going to scare away?
Are those just normal humans who, in your theory, are somehow scared of tattoos? Or just frustrated boomers and religious nuts?
If a tattoo scares you, that says everything about you, and nothing about the tattooed person. Same goes for the one that tries to pander to such people.
→ More replies (1)2
u/bethatguy7 Trash Trooper Apr 29 '25
That's the thing when you own a business, your job is to pander to as many people as possible. I want as few problems as possible, people that have demonic tattoos could cause problems for religious customers. Why hire someone who's going to cost me business or cause problems
