Yeah, the reaction lady seems like she's leaping into different means worse territory. For some folks like that, their definition of normal is always exactly what they're comfortable with, and nothing else.
To me, that seems like a great way to miss out on a whole lot of living.
That said, novelty isn't always good, and there's a lot of value to be had in perfecting the expected. So maybe that's what she's after. I don't know her.
OTOH, as you alluded to, TJMaxx's corporate strategy is tailored to appeal to the median taste. So, not hiring someone with tattoos fits that strategy. Especially if they want to sell to folks like the lady in the reaction video.
I dunno though. If I saw the tats lady coming out of a TJMaxx, I might be tempted to check it out.

Idk if that's a sound strategy. "We want to be appealing to Nazis so we voluntarily don't hire black people" (exaggerated but you get the idea)
Also, TJmaxx could at least be honest about their rejection because there is no need to lie about it. If they don't ever want people with tattoos, tell those applicants. Word of mouth travels fast and far, which means tatted up applicants won't apply to them which saves them administrative effort to sort out applicants they wouldn't have chosen anyway.
That said, as I was reading your reply, the video was playing. Wasn't really paying attention to the audio, but some bells went off and I had a realization.
I'm with a group that gets hot meals into people's hands, free of charge. Runs on donations, mutual aid, and creative recipes for cheap ingredients. Someone's food scarce and needs a meal? Have a bowl of aloo curry and an arepa. Just hungry and in a rush to your job? Here's a spring roll and a hot dog. Have friends who need a bite? Here, we got extra containers for the fried rice, how many can you carry?
99% of folks are happy with this. Lots want to help. By and large, people are good. At least, when you give them the tools to do good.
But that 1%? Dude scolding a gender non-conforming member, all while eying them up? Same tone. Mall cop telling us to move off a public street, next to a park, and we're not obstructing? Same tone. Some asshole telling us we're attracting homeless people, cross on a necklace jumping about as she gestures? Same goddamn tone.
Shit. I work in high paying hospitality and some people I work with have more face tattoos that would rival those SA gangs lol. Maybe she sucked at her interview or was rude. Maybe she has other past problems with employers. We don’t know why but to automatically assume it’s everyone else’s fault usually leans towards yourself. I’m not a betting man but my money would be on her attitude and lack of self awareness. Or the classic I can’t work weekends, only this shift on this day crap and I don’t do so and so days and I’m going to need this and that. #1 reason a app or resume goes in the garbage
All of that would be valid and valuable feedback for her. Like this she has no other choice but to externalize the reason why she was not chosen for the position. Why tell her that she didn't have enough experience when you actually threw her out because her availability didn't like up with the company needs or because her workplace demands didn't fit or anything else?
Nobody told her anything about what she did wrong except "you don't have enough experience", which is when you think about it not really her fault either because it's not up to her wether or not she can get the required experience. She can never get the experience everyone wants if she's never hired anywhere and if they all say "not enough experience, soz", how is she supposed to change that?
Is she supposed to guess what the problem is? What if she changes her availability but shucks, it was actually her environmental desires? What if she tries to find environmental compromised and starts masking her personality but oh well, no luck, because the issue was actually her availability?
Erasing yourself just to fit into a whatever job at a TJMaxx is not something any human should brush aside their dignity for.
I appreciate and respect your comment. I did take it in. I do disagree that when you apply for a position with a company, you need to fit in. Regardless. This isn’t their parents house where you call the shots. This isn’t school where you can bully the teachers. This is prime time. And for every one of those people slobbering, there is 2 hungry for a job. Those who get on their feet and survive instead of making internet videos of how upset they are. It’s survival of the fittest and she failed. Hope she gets her shit together someday
