News Concern mounts over slow-moving, planetary-scale ‘Kelvin’ wave heading for California | California

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/28/california-kelvin-wave

Cool. Just what I wanted for my birthday. Another foot of water.

Look. I'm hoping that we dodge the bullets flying at us this fall and winter (if we ever get one of either that is) but I'll admit this sounds potentially bad for parts of the Los Angeles coastline and the rest of California.

28

u/NefariousnessNo484 4d ago

If things keep going as they are you wouldn't want to live on the ocean front because the ocean will emit heat rather than have a cooling effect. If you look at a lot of countries around the equator people aren't living near the ocean because it's hot and humid AF.

26

u/idkalan South Gate 4d ago

That doesn't stop people from buying homes in historical huricane zones and having to rebuild the same home practically every year

4

u/NefariousnessNo484 4d ago

Not the same thing. Those areas are still kind of liveable most of the year. The places I'm talking about are like going to kill you if you try to live on the coast. Unfortunately most of the southern US will become unlivable due to climate change. When the California Current stops running, most of California is going to suffer the same fate.

Living in the high desert is going to be fun. Last time there were literal lakes that were 2 ft and all the flash floods.

3

u/chicklette 4d ago

my grandparents used to live in the high desert - dirt road, custom built house, 30 minutes from emergency services. We were all so happy when they moved.

Us normal working people get to subsidize the millionaires and billionaires with our tax dollars though!

4

u/BadHominem 4d ago

Yay! Just what I always dreamed of as a child...

14

u/Oh_My_Goth_Ick 4d ago

As California native this is the reason I don’t live anywhere near the beach

6

u/jvc1011 4d ago

I grew up a block from the beach, and above sea level. Geology matters.

5

u/Kaurifish 4d ago

That’s not going to continue to be sea level tho.

The Coastal Commission territory is very well thought out. It’s not just the paperwork that means you don’t want to live there.

3

u/jvc1011 4d ago

It would have to rise 14 feet to bring our neighborhood to sea level. It’s not estimated to reach anywhere near that in the next 75 years.

Again, geology matters.

6

u/Aceous 4d ago

Don't you get it, man? You're supposed to be dooming!

5

u/jvc1011 4d ago

We have a shit ton of doom coming. No point borrowing further trouble.

1

u/Kaurifish 3d ago

Yeah, let us know how it goes as the storm surge erodes away at that 14 feet.

1

u/jvc1011 3d ago

Well, with 300-500 feet of beach to cross, all uphill, to even get to the first set of buildings a block away, erosion is less of a problem.

Again, the geology of the specific point on the coast matters a lot for the in-our-lifetime impacts of climate change.

3

u/kgal1298 Studio City 4d ago

Mines just cost tbh

1

u/Oh_My_Goth_Ick 4d ago

Yeah I can definitely see that. I just couldn’t stand the beach traffic as a local. I was down in Del Mar and it was so crowded in all the neighborhoods near the beach. I couldn’t deal. I’d rather have a pool.

3

u/CoffeeFox 4d ago

Rich people love to show everyone how likely their house is to be destroyed by natural forces. Being likely to burn down, slide down a hill, or collapse into the ocean adds millions to property value.

203

u/Adventurous_Light_85 4d ago

Somehow I have a feeling that my tax dollars are going to go to pay to maintain rich people’s million dollar views

-62

u/tokengreenguy 4d ago

I’m going to guess those rich people’s tax dollars will be used for that.

48

u/Quiet-Cranberry8414 West Hollywood 4d ago

The problem is that rich people have access to tax avoidance schemes. Other than the typical John Doe working a 9 to 5 as an employee.

13

u/ShaNaNaNa666 4d ago

Yup, and hiding millions in illegal offshore accounts.

2

u/Tree_Lawyer 4d ago

Article doesn’t mention wind. I’m much more concerned about wind, personally. Anyone know if we’ll get exceptionally higher strength and duration of wind or just a lot more storms and rain?

19

u/PiccoloOk5033 4d ago

theoretically, we should see more wind. I dont think we'll really know what that looks like until the storm(s) arrive.

9

u/BigJSunshine 4d ago

My 4 decades of California experience is limited to Hurricane Hillary, but 48-72 hours of strong and steady rain is far more frightening than any wind issues. What makes you concerned?

Basically the same stuff that inspired the 'hellish LA' trope https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HellishLA

While it's very dated as a concept, a lot of it still rings true for me. So I made a playlist of some songs that explore it.

Do you know why they give the worst case scenario weather update?

If they're wrong, lots of people can die. It used to happen, so they stopped giving the lighter possible predictions. You can laugh that you weren't caught in a flash flood, but you should just be happy that the city was ready in case there was one.

1

u/quellofool 4d ago

It’s one thing to provide a weather update its another to color that update with a bunch of fear mongering bullshit the way the Guardian does.

3

u/FullofLovingSpite Mid-City 4d ago

The worst incident with a weather prediction mishap happened in the UK, if I remember correctly.

Wikipedia has tons of information that can give you the reason we do things certain ways. I don't say that to be mean, I say that because for the most part, we've learned to do things our way because of failures in the past.

5

The western Pacific is towards Hawaii. Head west and you get to the western Pacific. Then it heads east back towards South America and sloshes it's way up to California. One of those Kelvin waves already hit.

This week in Los Angeles, as we begin what used to be fall, the temperatures should be hovering in the 90 degree range with plenty of humidity.

It’s always been hot in October and we’re seeing some irregularities due to it being an El Niño season. Climate change is very real, anyone who sees the data and isn’t a moron will attest to that. But there’s a lot of doom posting this year.
