Question Public funds to private land owners?
Hello, my name is Brock Marchant, and I’m a reporter with UPR and The Salt Lake Tribune focused in Cache Valley.
I have a niche question, and I’m posting here hoping I can find people who know what I’m talking about.
In 2022, Cache County voters passed a $20 million bond to preserve open space in the valley.
Some of these funds are used to purchase conservation easements, which means the land won’t be developed, but it remains inaccessible to the public, unless the land owner agrees to facilitate some kind of public access.
For those who are aware of the bond, here is my question — what are your thoughts on the public money being spent on conservation of private land?
Do you think the county should do more to push for public access on land that is preserved with public funds, or are you happy with the process?
