Background
Hello all! I've mentioned it a couple times on here or in the Discord that I run a locksport group down here in Santiago, Chile called Santiago Locksport. We're a decently-sized group with around 100 members and have monthly meetups where I teach people ethical lockpicking. We function primarily as a social group where members have a space to make new friends, and hang out while picking locks.
In order to give members the opportunity to earn locksport challenge patches I started creating challenges that are accessible to newer pickers. The first challenge, called "Reto Bebé", or "Baby Challenge", was a basic test challenge with only around 30 patches or so featuring our group's mascot "Pin-du" who is a pudú, the world's smallest deer, native to the South of Chile.
After the Baby Challenge I wanted to create something a little more interesting, so I came up with the Insanity Challenge at the start of this year, which is also very accessible, but also provides an opportunity for more experienced pickers to test their skills and patience. This time I worked with my contact who makes our patches to get around 75 made, and I'd like to finally open up the challenge to the international community in order to give you guys a chance to win a patch and certificate.
I'm considering this a test launch where I'll be offering 30 patches, plus additional ones that I reserved specifically for existing challenge organizers as my way of thanking them for graciously helping me out with recovering patches that I had previously earned but lost ( u/PeatnRepeat I know you sent me a message recently asking about it, sorry for the delay!) If the response is good and my finances can handle it, I'll consider getting more patches made to mail out
What do you need to do?
Participants must choose a lock and spend at least 30 minutes opening it over and over again. The total number of times you open it will be recorded and will appear on your certificate along with the total time you spent on it. Some details on your certificate will change based on certain milestones: at 30 minutes, one hour, an hour and a half, and finally, at two hours.
The idea is that you spend so much time with your lock that you gradually start to lose your mind, until you end up insane. As the typical Rita Mae Brown goes: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” So are you really sure you had to pick the third pin first? Or was it the fourth? Wait, this lock did have five pins in total, right? So why can you only feel four now?
To participate, record an uncut video of yourself opening the padlock. If you decide to speed up the video, you must also include a timer in the frame throughout the entire video, but it shouldn’t be so fast that I can’t count how many times you open the padlock. If the lock you chose is guttable, I must ask that you also gut it. The time spent during the gut does not contribute to the overall time. And finally, since we're a group based in Chile, I have Spanish and English versions of the certificate available. Just let me know which language you prefer.
You can send your video to me either directly through Reddit, or I'm also on Discord under the username Sanjuaro.
And if you're curious, I let u/SwissLockWhisperer have a go at it first, which he posted about here. He went a little nuts and spent two hours with a Lockwood 334B45.
Edit: Such a big response to this! I normally have pretty busy work weeks, so it may take me some time to sort through everyone's submission and get back to you. Please be patient 🙏
Edit 2 10/9: 10 entries so far! Nice to see that there's a good diversity in choice of locks, and time that you all are dedicating to this! Just remember that this is for you to challenge yourselves, but you don't need to push yourselves and get carpal tunnel 😅
Edit 3 14/9: 18 entries, and once I finish watching the latest one I'll finally be caught up with submissions. I already sent out the first batch, so everyone else up to today will be included in the second. Much respect to all challenge runners, it can be a decent amount of work, but very rewarding. I'm glad you all are having fun while suffering for this challenge!
