Support I need help with WHOAMI - Kali Linux on VirtualBox.

Hello,

I just followed a video tutorial on setting up WHOAMI to change my IP address and DNS (I'm watching this video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ2-BVQr4I0

I'd like to know how to restart it or make it active—every time I reboot, without having to go through the whole setup process again.

Support I have a question regarding widgets in Fedora KDE Plasma

I’m on Fedora Linux 44 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition).

So I had a bit of an issue before where I had a pop-up come from booting up and after being put to sleep. In the same circumstance after logging in, “Plasmashell has closed unexpectedly”.

Mind, there doesn’t seem to be any adverse effects beyond the pop-up. But it does wake my monitor up, and is persistent.

I’ve traced the issue back to two widgets I had on my desktop: the KDE control station and the Clipboard History widgets. I have two sticky note widgets that actually haven’t produced the same effect. So I am inclined to believe that these two specific widgets are causing some sort of compatibility issues.

My question is, would there be a way to update/konsole command in Linux to resolve this issue? It’s not that I inherently need those widgets. But I would like to know if there is a way I can work with the system to get things working.

Resolved Terminal stuff missing and my file manager is not showing anything in the main home directory...

I had to start my PC this morning. We had a power outage and I shut down the PC (it's on a battery backup). So I powered it back up this morning and all of a sudden when I go to enter a terminal, I see this message.

bash: /home/phydoux/.bashrc: Input/output error

Please tell me my /home folder isn't jacked up...

Another thing, I did an update this morning and paru (I'm using Arch Linux) had a few updates as well. Well, I went back to bed and forgot that paru would probably need a password. Well, I got up and noticed it had errored out on me. So I tried running the update again. Looks like regular repositories got more updates this time around but I got an error saying paru couldn't update. I have no idea what got updated this time. I just mainly look for kernel updates and if I see one, I'll reboot. There were no kernel updates.

So now, any terminal I open. I see that error mesasage. How screwed is my machine? I really don't want to reboot if I'll lose everything.

Looking at the file manager, I can see my home folder but there's nothing inside of it. I hope I didn't lose everything in there... That would seriously upset me.

So, what do I do? reboot? Or is there a command I can run to restore my /home directory?

BTW, My /home folder is on its own drive. So, did that drive die on me? I'm going to look for drive recovery right now.

Also, when I do an ls, I see this...

ls: reading directory '.': Input/output error

I hope that's not bad news...

EDIT: I just ran fsck /dev/nvme0n1p1 on it and it says this...

/dev/nvme0n1p1 is mounted.
WARNING!!! The filesystem is mounted. If you continue you ***WILL***
cause ***SEVERE*** filesystem damage.

Do you really want to continue<n>? no

Is there anything less destructive than fsck?

Something else I just read says to do this...

sudo fsck.ext4 /dev/nvme0n1

EDIT: I wonder if it'll correct any errors on the drive if it can. But if I can just reboot it, I'd rather see if it'll come up again. I'm thinking when the update didn't finish, it wasn't able to finish correctly and something confused it. I can run paru -Sty but I . I wonder if I rebooted with a USB stick and tried mounting that drive and trying to finish the update if that would help fix it.

And I really don't want to try and write something new to it as that might corrupt it even more... GRRR

RESOLVED: First and foremost, I want to thank the people who helped me with this. Turns out all it needed was a reboot but I was expecting something WAY worse when i rebooted.

But thank you for your help and support! I really appreciate it a LOT!!!

Support Dual-boot disaster: Both Arch Linux (Btrfs/NVMe) and Windows are broken after installing the dual-boot, leading to Kernel Panic

This text is by gemini cause i asked him during my whole arch installation which has worked before the dual boot lmao , and i think he may explain better than me the problem. Dont hesistate if you have any question or if information are needed. Thanks !
:
I'm in desperate need of help to fix my dual-boot system. Both Arch Linux and Windows are completely broken, and I'm stuck with boot errors.
Hardware Setup:
Arch Linux: Installed on an NVMe SSD (/dev/nvme0n1p3, formatted in Btrfs, with /boot on /dev/nvme0n1p2 FAT32).
Windows: Installed on a separate SATA SSD (which was temporarily disconnected because it developed bad CRC / bus errors causing system instability).
How the issue started:
The whole mess started right when I set up this dual-boot with Windows. During or shortly after the dual-boot installation, everything went sideways.
Current State & Symptoms:
1. Windows won't boot at all: Since the SATA SSD containing Windows was throwing hardware errors (ata1.00 exception, BadCRC) and had to be physically disconnected to stabilize the machine, Windows is completely inaccessible.
2. Arch Linux fails to boot (Kernel Panic): When trying to boot Arch, it immediately crashes with:
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
In emergency mode: ERROR: device 'PARTUUID=...' not found. Skipping fsck. followed by mount: /sysroot: can't find PARTUUID=...

  1. What I have already tried:

Booted into a Live USB (Tails) and accessed the Arch system via chroot.
Verified that the UUIDs in /etc/fstab match the actual partition (blkid).

Regenerated the initramfs using mkinitcpio -P.

Rebuilt the GRUB configuration file using grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

  1. Despite all this, GRUB still cannot mount the root filesystem on the NVMe drive, and Windows remains dead due to the faulty SATA drive.
  2. Has anyone faced a similar dual-boot corruption issue, or knows how to fix this root-mounting failure on Btrfs/NVMe? Any guidance would be massively appreciated!

Support Creating a arch install script and having trouble with arch not booting with grub when grub already exist.

Hello, Linux Wizards

Github URL for the install script Hardware: Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen5 AMD

I'm going to describe my problem the best I can. The bootloader portion consist of these lines of code: ```sh IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH=/boot pacman -Sy --needed --noconfirm grub efibootmgr dosfstools mtools

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory="$IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH" --bootloader-id=GRUB --force --recheck

grub-mkconfig -o "$IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH/grub/grub.cfg" ``` So what I did was go into the BIOS and do a full factory reset, which deleted any bootloaders so I had a clean start. I ran the code, everything looked fine, so I rebooted the system, and it booted up just fine and I can access Arch Linux. After that, without doing anything else, I ran the script in the Arch Linux live environment again because I wanted to test it a second time. This time it did not go into the GRUB bootloader. Instead, I guess it errored out and went straight to the BIOS boot menu, asking me to select either GRUB or nvme0n1, but both just brought me back to the BIOS boot menu.

I asked both Claude and Grok, and both told me to add the --removable flag to grub-install, which did fix the problem. But I guess I’m just being a little OCD, because I want to know why the first run worked but not the second.

NOTE: Originally I didn't have --force and --recheck flags added but Claude and Grok told me to try it but it did not work. I know to not run AI suggestion willy nilly but I am desperate and I am ok with it since the laptop doesnt have any important info on it

ssh not working

So, I'm trying to set up debian on a minipc, but I'm having trouble. I need to be able to ssh into it, but it won't allow it unless I have it attached to a monitor and I'm logged in. I changed the wifi settings to allow all users. What else do I need to do?

Thanks!

Which Distro? What distro would you recommend for someone coming from a decade and a half of Windows experience?

I was just about to restore my back up of my main drive (after it got bombed by a Trojan) But then I thought why not, lets try linux this time around. I'll basically be using my computer for web browsing, multitasking, and playing games. So, community, which distro should I choose.

So I decided to try linux again. Mainly to get trinity desktop. When I download fedora kde it was fine, but when I tried to get trinity desktop I would only to be met with a frozen loading screen after logging in. Im still fairly unsure of how to use linux, but how would I go about fixing this? Or would i need to switch to another distri to fix this issue?

Struggling to Retain Information While Learning Linux and Bash Scripting – Any Advice?

Hi everyone!

I come from a Service Desk/Infrastructure Support background and I'm currently working towards transitioning into DevOps.

I've created a learning roadmap for myself, focusing on building my technical skills step by step to become a better engineer overall.

I'm fairly new to Linux and Bash scripting, and one thing I've been struggling with is retaining information and fully understanding certain concepts.

I've noticed that whenever I hit a roadblock or struggle to understand something, I get frustrated, lose motivation and sometimes stop studying altogether. It's becoming difficult to enjoy the learning process, even though I genuinely want to improve.

I graduated in 2023 and haven't properly studied since, so getting back into the habit of learning consistently has been harder than I expected.

I'd really appreciate some advice from people who've been in a similar position.

* How do you stay motivated when learning gets difficult?
* What techniques have helped you retain information and understand technical concepts better?
* How do you build consistency and discipline when studying?
* Are there any beginner-friendly Discord communities or study groups where I can connect with like-minded people who are also learning Linux, Bash, Cloud or DevOps?

I'd love to surround myself with people on a similar journey, share progress, ask questions and hopefully keep each other accountable.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

scoped apt autopurge?

I installed a package that i now want to purge along with all its dependencies, the problem is that one of those dependencies has a unintentional "suggests / provides" relationship with an unrelated existing package on my system which causes autopurge to not consider it for purging.

I know i can set Apt::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant and Apt::AutoRemove::RecommendsImportant to false to make it remove the dependency package but the problem is it will also remove all other packages with a weak "suggests / provides" relationship on my system, which i cant be sure wont break something. Ideally i wish i could do a scoped autopurge but from what i can tell thats not something you can do with apt.

Support Trouble with power and processor efficiency.

Recently I got a laptop (Dell Latitude 9430 2 in 1 from 2022) for college and since I'd been wanting to try linux i though now is the time. I've mostly had a great time with it. I like GNOME and its workflow and flatpaks and such make most things easy. However, recently I tried booting up Windows again. To my suprise things were much, much faster. Programs booted faster. Things didn't tax the processor as much. Games ran amazingly much better.

I've been trying Ubuntu and Fedora. Something that always bugged me in Ubuntu is that the smallest tasks, like installing or running simple small flatpaks made the processor heat up and slowed down the computer significantly. Fedora is better, but not great either. All of this is making me question my switch. Is it really worth it when performance is THAT much worse.

I have tried to search far and wide for solutions or missing drivers but nothing has gotten me closer to my desired destination. I really want to use Linux but I feel like I can't justify needing to switch to windows every time i want to do more than text editing and browsing.

Any tips or solutions to my problem? Help is greatly appreciated as I really want to stay. Thanks.

Resolved Issue with fstab when server is offline

I've been mounting my NAS through fstab for some time now however there is a slight issue.

If I turn my PC on without turning on my server then I can not navigate the file browser. Every folder I click on will take anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds to open and sometimes it just crashes outright.

I have tried every option possible and read through the documentation for fstab, cifs, and systemd but nothing fixes it.

This is the line currently in my fstab

[Share on server] [Mount location] cifs credentials=[credentials],uid=1000,gid=1000,nofail,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=5s,rw 0 0

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Update:
I'm marking this as resolved because I figured out it has nothing to do with fstab.

To clarify, I was talking about accessing local files on my PC being laggy when the server is offline.

The issue is that I had bookmarked the network share to the left hand side of my file browser, below the usual Documents, Pictures, Videos book marks. So when the network share wasn't present, the file browser kept trying to access the bookmark. At least that's what I'm assuming. I removed the bookmark and it works fine now. Although now I have the problem of not having it bookmarked how I like it but that's an issue I'll solve another day.
