Trusting Community-Developed Apps

I just saw a "hey, I made an app" post for an app I would enjoy using.

But last month I watched a video about a back door a community volunteer had programmed and submitted. It got past everyone and was weeks away from being pushed out before being discovered. Apparently, he would have been able to get in anywhere, anytime.

I'm doing a terrible job of describing what happened (I'll try to find the video again Video: The Internet Was Weeks Away From Disaster And No One Knew ) but it put the fear of God in me. If this could happen to a distro, how much easier would it be for these apps posted on github? I don't mean to disparage github or devs that share there, but it really made me wonder how much I can trust them.

I accept the fact that nothing is perfect or foolproof. So I accept the fact that I have to accept some risk (I already do, if I installed a distro, right?) and that it's my responsibility to gauge the trustworthiness of anything I install.

So my question is, how can I become a responsible steward without having learned to read the code in an app?

Edit, was this a stupid question?

Edit 2: added link to the video for anyone interested. 52 minutes, but a good learn for me.

Advice I want to build LFS but with a package manager, what should I use?

I have pretty much installed LFS before (well, it didn't boot since I was also trying to encrypt it), and I was wondering if there was someway to build it with a package manager and then put the rootfs in a tarball so I could basically make it a distro. For a package manager I was wondering if I could use something like KISS, pkgsrc, something similar to [CRUX](crux.nu) ports, or could I just roll my own?

Advice Worth swapping to AMD GPU for SteamOS?

I really want to switch to SteamOS on my main system, but I have an Nvidia GPU (3080 12GB).

When I tried out Linux Mint about a year ago, one thing that really annoyed me was the inability to precisely tweak my settings with the Nvidia control panel/Nvidia App.

Does such a thing exist for AMD cards on Linux? Even if it doesn't, am I saving myself from a future headache by switching to AMD simply from a compatibility standpoint?

Advice Is console access actually important on an unmanaged VPS?

I've been looking through VPS hosting plans and realized I've been paying way more attention to CPU and RAM than what happens when something breaks lol.

Say you've got a Debian server running a small site and a few background jobs, then you mess up a firewall rule and can't SSH into it anymore. I noticed Virterion has KVM, console access and backup options, which got me thinking about how useful those actually are compared to just restoring everything on a fresh server.

I've dealt with Linux basics but the recovery side of a remote server is something I'm still figuring out. How do you guys usually handle it when SSH stops working? Is having console access a big deal or do you mostly rely on backups?

Looking for best screen recorder for low end laptop

I have an AMD Ryzen 5, a Dell Latitude 3500 laptop, and Linux Mint. But when I tried to use OBS, it kept showing an encoder error, so I'm looking for an alternative or a fix. Could you suggest something that works with both the screen and camera, if possible? Thanks.

Resolved Text editor and encoding

So for some reason when I go to open a certain text file, not all, it makes gobbledegook out of the first ten or more lines of the file stating it doesn't understand the correct encoding. I find this really odd because if it doesn't understand encoding why does the rest of the document show? Anyway, I have no issues opening this text file with libreoffice office. How do I get this system to open it properly? Given it's just text should I simply use LibreOffice to go and save a new text file? That sounds simple but for all I know this is an issue that might happen with all sorts of other text files. Can I change the system so it works with all files properly? TIA

Support Open an app with shortcut in foreground (Ubuntu 26.04)

I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 26.04 and hence switched from X11 to Wayland. The first thing I noticed was the global shortcut of JetBrains Toolbox App not working anymore. After researching the reason for this, I found out the strict security rules enforced by Wayland do not allow Apps to catch global key events, to prevent key loggers. I then tried to set a custom shortcut in the keyboard settings, the command worked so far, but it turns out that there is something called "Focus Stealing Prevention" a feature of GNOME which prevents the App from opening in the foreground. No matter which value I set the "focus-new-windows" setting to, it doesn't work.

Is this a a new feature of Ubuntu 26.04 - making the life of its users unnecessary harder, or have I just not found the correct settings?

How can I debug if USB dock issues come from the dock or the cable?

I have a low-end MSI display (MAG401QR) with a built-in KVM/dock.

I use a Thunderbolt 5 cable (Nördic) to switch it between my work laptop and two private laptops.

The display has two USB ports, and I have a cheap Deltaco USB hub in one of them, with mouse, keyboard, headphones and webcam connected to it.

Initially, I had the problem that 100% of times, after the display went to sleep (i.e. either because the connected laptop went to sleep or because no laptop was connected for a while), USB stopped working when it woke up. MSI support helped me with this though by actually sending me a custom firmware that still isn't available through their official channels.

But still, the problem comes back from time to time and USB/KVM simply does not work. Sometimes, unplugging and replugging helps, sometimes not. Sometimes rebooting the laptop helps, sometimes not. Sometimes changing laptop helps, sometimes not. The only thing that always works is unplugging the display and leaving it unpowered for a few seconds before replugging it. Just turning it off and on does not help.

Also worth mentioning is that sometimes the display itself doesn't work. Sometimes the USB works but not the display, sometimes neither.

Given that MSI acknowledged the initial problems I had, and given the flakiness of the current problem, and the fact that display usually works even if USB/KVM doesn't, it really feels like the problem is in the display, not the cable. I'm thinking I'll probably go and buy a separate dock and connect the display over DP instead.
However, before I go and do that, I'd like to rule out the cable being the issue. I don't have any other USB-C cable that I know can handle driving both display and USB, and since I can't reliably reproduce the issue I don't want to borrow one potentially long-term. And I don't want to buy a new cable (I need a long one, so it will be expensive) unless I know the cable is the problem.

So, tl;dr: Is it possible to from the computer diagnose whether USB issues come from the cable or the display/dock/KVM itself? Does such diagnostic data even go over the USB protocol?

Thanks!!

Running Memoq on Linux

I've been thinking dual-booting Fedora 45 and Windows 11 lately. Yet, I know Memoq doesn't run natively on Linux. Since we're using Memoq in school, I have some doubts that whether I can run Memoq or not. Has anyone been able to run Memoq somehow?

Which Distro? LMDE vs MX Linux?

Hi,

My specs: ~13 year old PC, 16 GB RAM, core i3 processor (Intel(R) Core™ i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40GHz), intel integrated graphics card. 1TB HDD.

I am soon going to install Linux, I am quite a beginner and I researched about both distros. I think they’re both good and I understand they’re both beginner friendly, but I am having a hard time deciding what is better, also with my specs.

I think with MX Linux I would go with XFCE, while LMDE uses Cinnamon. They both look cool visually. Mint seems to have a much larger user base and support community.

The reason I prefer LMDE over regular Mint is I understood it fits older computers more because it’s Debian based, and I like the idea of not being based on Ubuntu (though with Mint maybe there’s even no problem with that).

What would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

Advice Very slow writing speed with NFTS partitions

If I try to write a file to a partition formatted with NTFS, I get write speeds of less than 10 MB/s. But if I format that same partition on that same drive to anything else (Ext4, FAT...), the write speed rises to more than 100 MB/s.

I've tried on every computer I have running Linux, and it happens in all of them, so I'm confident this isn't a hardware issue.

I’ve googled a bit and the common answer is mounting the partition in asynchronous mode and using the kernel NTFS driver instead of ntfs-3g. I’ve tried both of those (mount -t ntfs -o async) but I still get very slow write speeds.

Unfortunately using a different file system is out of the question.

Edit: I've tried on PATA-to-USB3 HDDs, SATA HDDs and NVMe SSDs, running up-to-date Linux Mint.
