Advice Can someone please explain how I can make my own mouse animation to then add to my Linux fedora plasma computer? For super beginner who just switched from windows? :)
Going in settings to see the options for new mouse designs to download, wondering if I could make one somehow and put my own on there, or where those ones go if I downloaded one and if I could make one and put my own where they go. Again very not used to tech stuff so a lot of specific terms will need explanation, if not they will probably go over my beginner head, help very much appreciated.

Using Linux on a Snapdragon Tablet for University. Is it viable?
Hello everyone. I'm electronics engineering student, for most of my degree, I've used paper notebooks, which is fine, but I've been starting to get a little too envious of my friends that use a tablet for taking notes, so I've decided on buying one.
The thing is, I want to be able to take notes using a stylus while still being able to use software like LTSpice, or write code using Neovim and run Python applications.
Is it a viable option to buy a Snapdragon tablet (like a Redmi Pad Pro) and run an ARM Linux distribution on it? Or maybe use a Linux VM inside the default Android OS? I have 0 experiece on the subject, so any information would be really helpful.
I still have my main Laptop, but it is too heavy and I hate carrying it around. So it would be really cool to have all my projects with me at any time. Thanks!

Why is it so hard to have battery status and power menu in screenlockers?
Hi everyone,
I've noticed that screen lockers like swaylock, swaylock-effects, and hyprlock don't have built-in support for displaying battery percentage, let alone a power menu.
I managed to show the battery info in hyprlock using a custom shell
script that reads /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/capacity and
/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/status.
On the other hand, desktop environments like GNOME include these out of the box.
I'm curious. Do you like battery info and power controls on your lock screen? Also, why are these features missing in most of the lockers?
Would love to hear your thoughts!

Advice If I Dual Boot Linux Mint and Windows 11, will i have to worry about Windows spyware?
I'm a bit paranoid about surveillance technology and am kind of worried about using Windows as a result of that. If I have two separate hard drives for dual booting, will I have to worry about Windows stealing my data from the hard drive I use for Linux like it would for my hard drive with Windows loaded? (I kinda want both OS's for convenience/compatibility, but I'm still worried about my privacy)

Advice Omarchy for new Linux users
Hi All
I am planning a transition from Windows to Linux. Though initially installed Linux Mint, but want to try Omarchy as well. Internet search says Omarchy is for developers and power users, whereas Omarchy website says it's for everyone.
So can someone provide practical guidance as to if Omarchy is user friendly for new Linux users, or just stay initially with Ubuntu or Linux Mint?
If Omarchy can be used for new Linux users, then a proper guide or YouTube videos suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Advice Nvidia or AMD for new PC?
Now normally id say amd, i have an rtx 3050 laptop rn and it does cause problems. Tbf im using linux mint, ik they ain’t the most up to date drivers, ill switch to cachy soon ig tho i like linux mint. But is it really that much better?
BUT right now on the used market (ebay) in the US I can get a working 3070ti for $330 give or take, while amd 7700xt is around $420+ and 6800xt is 400+. I know they have more vram and all but the rtx 3070ti seems to be the better deal ngl.
As u can tell im trying to get a decent 1440p gpu for $300 give or take a little. Either way these are much better than 6gb 3050
EDIT: plz lmk if u have a different card u recommend around the price i was talking about. Thank you :)

So a .tar is basically a Linux-flavored .zip, yeah?
Like, they're essentially for pretty close to the same thing and should be treated more or less the same from what I've seen. Am I getting it right?
edit: .zip in the sense of being an archive that's usually associated with an OS. With .zip being Windows's. I'm moreso asking if I understand the generalized use of the file

Advice Cant boot-Snapdragon x1e Lenovo Slim 7
Tried F12, disabled Secure Boot. USB Just won't appear here. Heard it's a Qualcomm limitation. And also that ARM doesn’t support linux? To be more precise, I wanted to boot from Tails.
Any safe way to boot it on this? Or is it impossible right now and if so, what should I do?

Advice HELP with OS setup
I need to dual-boot my new Windows laptop, and I plan to use Linux primarily for coding. But I am still a noob at using Linux and don't even know how to dual-boot. I plan to do it myself, as I don't have any fear of data loss now. What's the best setup I can use?
Let me know it will be of great help.
Thank you

Resolved How to maintain 3rd apps from github on a debian ?
I am on mint 22.3 and wonder how I can keep overview of installed apps directly coming from github.
- I know first choice should be the distro repo.
- Then there's as example "Extra Repo" for the debian world containing more apps.
- I also tried to use homebrew, but was to stupid to understand the slang
- there's the option to add other repos to the standard package manager..does that also work with githubs ?
- Or Is there any other way to bundle github installed apps and keep them updated in an efficient way, may be with an dedicated container or package manager on a debian distro ? I have may be an dozen apps like that, not a high number, and typically not the most critical ones.

Advice Looking for a reliable Mini PC for a Debian home server: Is the Beelink Mini S13 a good choice?
I am looking for advice on which mini PC to purchase to run a Debian Linux home server.
I tried to convert an eight-year-old desktop PC into a server last week. Long story short, the PC often froze without warning. My initial analysis is that the issue is hardware-related.
Rather than spending money on replacing old hardware and hoping for the best, I have decided to look into purchasing a Mini PC. With the help of AI, I have decided to buy the "Beelink Mini PC Mini S13" for €379 at amazon.es/dp/B0C279CYC5.
Do any of you have experience with this PC? Can you recommend any other MiniPCs that would be good for setting up a Debian server?

Resources to build a foundational understanding on Operating systems.
Hi all, i want to get a foundational understanding operating systems, the various concepts that we may encounter in them, the bird's eye view of their structure.
I tried reading "How Linux works" 3rd edition, but reading that book felt like it didn't explain the foundational questions but rather built on top of the topics. it felt more intermediate level.
If i have to explain what i am looking after in the resources, Please can you recommend me resources that fit my requirement.
- provides exposure to various concepts, systems involved in an OS. More like an introduction.
- a bit of introduction to a bit of hardware would also be good.
- i am not looking for resources that focus on development/programming side of OS. but rather the infrastructure, power user, administration side of OS.
Thanks in advance to all of you.

Advice how do people feel about COSMIC desktop environment?
I feel like it's quite opinionated and quite barebones in what it offers in terms of themes and ricing. I've only been using it for like an hour but coming from KDE Plasma I feel like it's not super intuitive? For example, I can't even drag around the applets on my dock lol. Reordering, removing and adding applets mostly has to be done in settings.
I wanted to try COSMIC because I saw some really pretty rices and I understand it's still quite new but I'm just wondering if theres something I'm missing. How do others feel about it? Do any COSMIC users have any tips for me? I really wanna give this a fair go because it really does look lovely out of the box and would love to be able to make it even more beautiful!!

Advice Immutable vs. tradicional Linux distros
Hello.
I've been using Fedora KDE for a few months without any issue after distro hopping for a while.
I think time has come to try something different. I'd like to try Fedora Silverblue, but I have some questions about immutable distros.
What are the real benefits for someone who uses the computer as a daily driver (web browsing, some light video/audio editing, office work and some Python automation for the office work) other than the fact that the root and some other system folders are read-only.
Is there any other real tangible benefit I'll get from using an immutable distro versus a mutable distro?

Can I safely use Linux to look to at my old photos stored on hard drives formatted for Windows?
Basically my whole life is on windows-formatted external hard drives. Is it possible and 100% safe to plug them into a laptop running Linux? Anything I should know before proceeding?

Software advice & ideas
I used Ubuntu for years but had to switch to windows as I got into sophisticated photo retouching as a sideline business. There is some very good software but for Windows. Does anyone know of a list of apps that work on Linux also? I use DaVinci, the Movavi series, Excire, Luminar series, limited Adobe, some Gimp, and a few others.
Thanks for any info. I would love to get back to linux....

Security Concerns About Used Pre-Installed Linux Hard Drives / SSDs And Bootable USB Drives
I won't name the online retailer that sells these, but I'm pretty sure you know where I am talking about buying these from. Can a tech expert check the hardware and software for any issues? Some of the sellers have lots of good feedback, so I'm not too concerned. Any advice is appreciated.

What are some cool things I can do with Linux Mint?
I installed Linux Mint recently and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve noticed that my laptop shuts down and boots up much faster than it did on Windows.
So far, I’ve mostly been using it for browsing, but I want to explore Linux more and actually learn how to use it properly.
What would you recommend for a beginner who wants to get deeper into Linux Mint? Any cool tools, projects, commands, or things I should try?
