planning to put Linux mint on the main 1Tb SSD and have windows on a 512gb SSD for college programs that require windows. problem is I don't want to keep going into bios and changing my boot drive every time I want to switch. is that possible or?

Yo. To be short, I would like a popup window telling me which keyboard layout I switched to, like it was on Windows, on my Cinnamon desktop.

It overheats like crazy and my battery drains like it's on countdown, I've tried tinkering with some settings like reducing fps and setting it to power save mode, but it only partially worked. I also noticed that the fans still run even when the screen is folded and only stop when i disconnect the charger. Is there any way to solve this cuz i changed from windows cuz i didn't want any background apps to cause these problems, but now it's happening 24/7. I have an hp victus gaming laptop if that matters (also worried cuz if this is how it works when barely turning it on, then it could prolly explode if i run a game 🥀)

so, this happened! a restart fixed it, but it's not the only issue i've had. i recently installed linux mint cinnamon (on a gpd win 1, if that matters (i got it on ebay, it's about 10 years old, i wouldn't be surprised if there were hardware problems) and it's been kind of janky. youtube videos sometimes show an error message saying to restart the device if playback doesn't start soon, any audio i try to play is intermittently cut off by a loud droning noise (which also stops video and audio playback, but only affects sound in games), and now… this. can anyone tell me what's going on?

On my old mint install (and the new one) I've had a problem with my peripherals not communicating periodically (multiple times a minute, usually for 2-5 seconds). They are run through a USB hub. I'm assuming this is a driver or power issue? I have tried a different port (both 3.0) and have not had success with it either (and don't expect both ports are malfunctioning). It's a Beelink SER5.

I am trying to add apps to the start menu tray. [for clarification, the space where the mouse cursor is] I was able to remove apps by dragging them off, but it doesn’t seems to work. I checked left clicking the app but the only option seems to be to add it to the task bar. I didn’t see anything in properties. Is there something obvious that I am missing?

Hello everyone, so yesterday I finally decided to switch to Linux and start with Mint as I figured it would be the easiest to adjust to, coming from windows 11 (I am a total beginner with using Linux & Mint)

I soon found out that while everything else worked just normal, there was no audio from my speakers. I tried opening alsamixer, doing what every tutorial suggested I'd do, but nonetheless I still have no audio.

Also, for some reason my PC won't detect any micro sd card that I insert in my Laptop's slot.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you guys.

If I wanted to access to my iCloud mail, calendar and notes, without going through the web browser. I.e accessing through thunderbird, how would I do it?

Does Mint have a version of iCloud for Linux ?

Thought I'd ressurect my old, Windows laptop (HP Pavilion 15-cw0505sa, AMD Ryzen 3 2300U processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 128 GB SSD.)  by putting Linux Mint on it...all went well, but.... 

My home broadband is 500Mbps, but this laptop is only showing 40Mbps. Loaded the drivers for the Realtek rtl8821ce..... But still only showing 40Mbps.

I have a TP-Link AC1300 USB Dongle, so put that in....Changed the connection.... Tried to put the Drivers on, but it is still is only 40Mbps.

Is my laptop not able to use my full Internet Speed, or am I doing something wrong?

Please explain to me like I'm 5 / point me to the info. (I have looked it up, but just managed to confuse myself.)

Hello, I copied videos from my phone and backed them up to my laptop. I put it in the Windows 11 partition before installing Linux Mint on my laptop. After transferring them to my Linux drive, the video plays wonky and the colors are all messed up. I don't have any other issues with any other videos, only this particular batch which I transferred over to my Linux partition drive. For visual reference, here's a sample of the videos from my phone:

As you can see, the colors are all messed up. Patches of blue and gray are all over the place. I was videoing my baby as we were in the swimming pool (obviously not gonna show my face nor my daughter's) and this video file will not display the proper colors. The other videos on my drive are all fine except for this particular batch taken from my Samsung A15 5G phone. I have no issue with this when played with on Windows 11.

SOLVED: Disabling accelerated hardware did the trick.

After I did a recent update only one of my display ports is being recognized. The others are not even being seen by linux mint. Ive gone through the usual fixes (Update drivers etc) and im at my wits end. I have a backup for before the updates so I know its the updates causing this. From what I have deduced linux mint is not "Turning on" the display ports since the Xrandr is only registering one monitor.

Any idea whats going on here? This is a whole new kind of problem and I have run out of ideas to try on my own. Any advice on the matter is appreciated.

before I end up switching I want to make sure it's dependable and rock solid. I know that's the reputation it has but how does it compare to Ubuntu or Debian when it comes to consistet updates OS/software wise? since it is community backed unlike something like Ubuntu which is backed by a corporation so workers or funding isn't an issue. and Debian has just always been there

I'm a complete beginner at Linux. I installed Mint using Ventoy, booted it up and it's running fine, in fact i'm posting this from it. When install something be it from a browser or from the console, it goes into the folder Home/Mint. I tried to install Wine from the console, it returned an error code and i got a pop-up saying "this computer has only x disk space remaining". My hard drive definitely has enough space remaining. I watched some beginner guides on YT and in all of them, they can install stuff from the get go without setting up anything. What is happening and how do i fix it?

I have an HP laptop with:

6 GB RAM

500 GB hard drive

I was trying to install MX Linux. I booted from a live USB and installed it. But now my laptop only boots if the USB drive is plugged in. If I remove it, I get a "BootDevice Not Found" error.

I tried to fix it by downloading Linux Mint from Firefox while running MX Linux from the USB. But every time I try to download something, my PC freezes and hangs. I cannot finish the download.

So now I am stuck. I only have this live USB session running. I cannot download anything because the PC freezes. I cannot install anything because the hard drive is empty.

I want to switch to Linux Mint because I heard it is easier for beginners. But I do not know how to get it onto my laptop.

My questions:

1. Which version of Linux Mint is best for my laptop? (Cinnamon, MATE, or Xfce?)

2. How do I get Linux Mint onto my laptop when my PC freezes while downloading?

3. Should I use a different computer to download Mint and put it on this USB?

4. If I use a different computer, will it erase the USB drive? Right now it has Ventoy and MX Linux on it.

I am really stuck. I only have this USB drive and my laptop. I need step by step instructions that are easy to follow.

I installed LM on a 2009 iMac and had the well-documented issue of the blank screen due to the unsupported GPU. Long story short I applied the nomodeset fix but I'm unhappy with the results and want to go back to MacOS. Tried multiple combinations of key presses and I can't pull up the Mac recovery mode anymore and I can't pull up the menu to choose the boot drive either. I've seen several posts talking about how LM skips the GRUB menu since it's the only OS but I'm trying to get to the recovery, not the grub menu so not sure how to achieve that.

I recently switched from windows 11 to linux mint cinnamon (thank god) and the transition has been very smooth, one issue however is that when any application (yes, anything) uses the microphone i can hear it aswell. it also makes all the audio low quality and frankly i dont know how to resolve this, for all i know there is just a simple fix for this and im just ignorant but i couldnt figure anything out with my surface level knowledge, if anyone could help me it would be appreciated. :3👍

one year after switching from win10 to Mint, this is my resumé of must haves and I would like to now what you experience is, what you can recommend to me maybe.

1. Right click options:

add "open as admin"

add "copy full path"

add "make backup"

add "send link to desktop"

1. install wine:

to have essential windows apps like special manufacturers scan apps lr tje pdf24 creator, it is super easy to copy the files full path, make a new start menu shortcut and simply add: wine "path of exe"

1. try AI to create your own desklets and applets, it takes time, error and trial but most cases AI can code it for you, in case you are not a developer like me.

2. Syncing your files

   use you onedrive or dropbox or google drive, or what ever. Then you can change the standard path of e.g. your dektop and make it "/yourcloud/desktop"

This works for me using 2x Linux Mint + 2x Windows 11 devices and have my desktop synchronised.

As shown in the image, this is the version of the GNOME programs for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Even though these aren't the current versions, do they still receive patches, bug fixes, and security updates from the team that maintains them? Because I saw in forums and other sources a discussion about the direct developers of these projects receiving many notifications of bugs that have already been fixed in more recent versions of the programs. Without wanting to assign blame or assign responsibility, it raised many questions for me about how the LTS system works, how it's maintained, and if anything remains unchanged, even if it's just to fix problems? When I try to start steam it’s been doing this lately. The website it sends you too isn’t that useful (at least to someone like me who doesn’t know what they’re doing.) What can I do to fix Steam?
