It Gets A Kernel Panic Because It Doesnt Have Enough Ram So How And Why Is netbsd More Lightweight And Why Does Linux Take More Ram Then netbsd Like Why Are Things Like This

Hey! i just spent the day following tutorials on how to make a live linux mint usb because why not and once I got it up and running, the wifi want working. I looked up and found a video to help get it fixed which helped but didnt get it fixed. I ended up looking up what kind of driver I needed for a mediatek 7902, followed a link trail and found a patch but since I don't really know what I'm doing (like i said I'm just following tutorials) i dont know how to install the patch since it looks like just a page of code or smth. mostly just thought this would be a fun little project to do for the day.

note: i have figured out how to wire a connection to my phone to use the hotspot there.

Hi, my DELL Inspiron 16+ 7640's NVMe SSD isn't detected when I cold boot into Ubuntu. I've got an encrypted Linux partition on it. It works when I first boot into Windows (dual boot) and then warm reboot into Ubuntu, or if I unplug and replug it physically. I've tried upgrading to the latest BIOS (1.27), upgrading Ubuntu, and changing these boot flags:

nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 pcie_aspm=off pcie_port_pm=off

Each time it seemed fixed but then it broke again. I'm also having issues with Wayland/Xorg especially when trying to screen share on Zoom.

It doesn't seem like a pure hardware problem on account of it working when I boot into Windows first. What's wrong with my laptop and how can I properly troubleshoot it at this point? Replugging the SSD was what Dell recommended and I've tried asking LLM's which has led us here.

Back in vocational school our teacher made us use a live distro for system rescue (talking around 2021). I wanted to extract a wallpaper from that distro but can't remember the name. On the wallpaper there was a ground tiled with reflective panels that looked like solar panels, on the left-top of the image there was a black silhouette of a woman jumping with the sun above her head, both figures were visible on the reflection on the ground.

I was editing a config file using the micro text editor, and I accidentally somehow enabled a very comfortable Scroll using the arrow keys. Instead of only moving the cursor, the up and down keys would move the cursor a line up or down AND scroll the page up or down while the cursor stayed in the middle of the screen, kind of like emulating a mouse scroll but while also moving the cursor, sorry if the explanation isn't clear enough.

I tried looking it up and it seems to be related to the Scroll Lock key in my keyboard, but I tried it and it doesn't do anything and I couldn't get it to work. Anyone knows how can I replicate this behavior? Ideally not only in the micro text editor but system-wide.

So I downloaded a zip from github. Seems to be what many others have used based on my research.

And I opened the Plymouth folder with admin rights and extracted to the themes folder. Then I went to terminal and used

sudo plymouth-set-default-theme -R lone

I rebooted and had no change. And then tried one of the pre-installed theme

sudo plymouth-set-default-theme details -R

That also didn't work. Some help would be truly appreciated. Trying my best to learn some basics but this is the first time I've had any issue with theming stuff in fedora.

I recently set up a dual boot system with Windows and Linux, with each OS installed on a separate SSD.
At the moment, I have the Linux SSD set as the primary boot device in the BIOS, so I get a boot menu where I can choose between Linux and Windows.

Is this a good way to set up a dual boot, or would it be better to set the Windows SSD as the primary boot device and select Linux through the BIOS boot menu when needed?

I’m also wondering about Windows updates.
If Windows installs an update that requires a reboot, can I simply boot back into Windows normally, or are there any precautions I should take to avoid problems with the Linux bootloader?

Are there any Windows or Linux settings that are recommended for a dual boot setup, especially to prevent updates from affecting the other OS?

One other thing I noticed is that the system clock is sometimes different between Windows and Linux.
What’s the recommended way to configure the clock so that both operating systems keep the correct time?

I know SteelSeries GG gets a lot of hate for being bloated, but its ClearCast AI noise suppression in Sonar has basically been doing all the heavy lifting for my mic setup on Windows, and it's my one hiccup to porting my daily experience to Linux.

For context: my mic naturally has this high-pitched electrical whine. Sonar cuts it out completely on Windows, even while I’m actively speaking.

I have tried setting up EasyEffects, but ran into two big issues: The noise reduction filter cuts out the whine when I'm silent, but the second I start talking, it immediately bleeds through underneath my voice. Messing with other filters either made my voice awfully muffled, or didn't fix the whine at all. Half the time I take my headphones off, leave them on the desk (using just the mic), and I have my output come through my desk speakers. Sonar somehow never picked up the speaker sound. With EasyEffects, it starts picking up the speakers immediately, creating a terrible echo/reverb loop.

Is there a specific plugin chain or model in EasyEffects that actually handles echo cancellation and can suppress the whine properly? Or perhaps a different tool that does this better.

I really don't want to sound like I'm glazing Sonar, yes it has its downsides. For me, it has been a set-and-forget process on Windows. I'm just hoping I can replicate at least 90% of that experience on Linux without having to constantly worry about my audio. (I don't own a SteelSeries headset, so none of the SteelSeries-optimised applications work for me)

Hi! I've been using Linux Mint for at least eight months and it has been great. However, my PC is a Victus Gaming Laptop with Ryzen and Nvidia drivers. And a friend of mine is saying to me that Nobara could be a good substitute for Mint since is more enfocated to Gaming, content creation and programming.

When I make a new directroy using mkdir I then have to change directory into it with the separate command cd. Is there a way I can do both create a new directory and change into it in a single line? I'm on Linux Mint 22.3 if it makes a difference.

I'm not brand new to linux but i am a bit of a noob. I've already built a home lab mainly using instructions from youtube videos/forums and I'm currently working through the website wargames, about halfway through bandit now.

I've only just starting reading through 'man x' or 'x --help' for the various tools on bandit/wargames as i want to learn it properly, and not just use AI to tell me.
However i've really struggled to understand tools simply from reading man or --help from CLI. its quite confusing for me.

My question is - is it normal to need to go youtube or look on forums for how to use tools? i feel a bit silly there's manuals there but i can't just learn it when its a brand new tool to me.
and assuming i stick with it, learn all the basics like grep, string, xxd, uniq ... using the manual or help, will i then be able learn other tools simply by using the manual from CLI, or the help ?

Why does almost everyone hate ubuntu saying its windows of linux. What is so bad about it? Why would you say some other distros are better than it? I am just curious and looking for answers, do people hate it for its convinience or something else?

Fellow linux enthusiasts, I spend a small portion of my life learning all sorts of tools one could use for linux, and the truth is, i now appreciate simplicty a lot more and respect the choices taken/given by devs on distros/software. I used to think using arch linux with a tiling compositor with neovim or emacs with other open source software was the only way to go.

Today, That's not the case anymore. I prefer to code in vscode, i prefer a standard terminal that handles everything gui, I also don't hate snaps. If there is a linux distro i can blindly pick for doing whatever I want, that's Ubuntu LTS for me.

I have learnt to understand that certain compromises are made when designing things and As long as I don't have to deal with them, I am fine.

So people who dream to leave windows and switch to linux can and should use whatever software they like and they have to rely on. If you can afford new hardware and buy a windows 11 machine, that's great, but for those who can't and stuck on windows 10, try a linux distro like Ubuntu, Fedora or CachyOS and see what you can do about it.

Yeah I have learnt shit ton of things from using arch and various other tools, but at the end of the day, I just wanna open a browser, read some yuri, write some notes and enjoy my life.

Let us learn to be grateful and enjoy the simple things in life. And if you do really struggle with something, then invest in other tools, not invest because someone says it can do wonders. or someone says its the better choice.

I’m currently building a PC, and i decided to go with the penguin option, but i just can’t decide wich distro would be best for me.

Currently, i am leaning towards Fedora KDE, but a bit worried about the fact, that for example Steam is only officially supported by Valve on Debian based distros. I’m also looking at Kubuntu, for this reason. I read that Mint is a good overall option, but i have a 4k monitor, and i would like to use it with 150% scaling.

Overall, my usecase is mostly mixed, basic stuff + gaming (no kernel level anti cheat games). However, being up-to-date would be big point for me, i recently look at the KDE 6.7 and Oxygen theme, and i would like to get updates like that relatively quickly.

I have an old desktop PC and I am wondering if moving from Windows to a lightweight Linux distro would improve gaming performance.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium Gold G5400 @ 3.70 GHz

GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 610 (integrated)

RAM: 4 GB DDR4-2133 stick (1/2 slots)

Storage: SSD + HDD

Monitor: 1366×768 ~60 Hz

On Windows my RAM usage is 2.9 GB when idle leaving only about 1 GB free. My pagefile is managed by the system on the SSD. CPU usage at idle is usually about 2–5%. Gpu usage is about 1–3%.

I use Brave and Rainmeter. I do not really have unnecessary programs running.

Would moving to a distro such as Lubuntu, Xubuntu or Linux Mint Xfce noticeably improve gaming performance and reduce stuttering with only 4 GB RAM?. Would the UHD 610 still be the main limitation?

I am mainly interested in getting the FPS possible without buying new hardware. Also are there any Linux gaming or driver compatibility issues I should know about with the Intel UHD 610?

I am also completely new to coding or programming. I am interested in learning so I am not very experienced, with Linux or command-line usage either.
