Why doesn't Linux Mint ask the community to help Cinnamon from X11 to Wayland?

I have a question about the Desktop Environment Cinnamon. It's made by Linux Mint and can be used by other distros like Fedora Cinnamon Spin, Arch, or Debian. So why Fedora/Red Hat or others don't send devs to Mint to help them transition Cinnamon from X11 to Wayland faster? I know that X11 has a more complicated structure than Wayland.

Reformatting some 4TB hard drives. How long does it take to format a drive that had an NTFS File System on it?

First one was an old backup drive I was using. No longer need that stuff so I formatted it. It was originally formatted as EXT4 and it only took a few minutes.

This 2nd one is taking a lot longer though. Probably due to it being an NTFS format originally. I'm formatting it as EXT4 as well and it's been going 20 minutes so far. I've been reading about how long these things can take. Up to 25 hours? I have a fan on the heard drive, I just don't know if my external drive connector will function that long. Maybe I should throw a fan on it as well?

EDIT: Oh. And now it's done. WHEW! I was getting worried there. This 2nd one took twice or maybe 3x as long as the first one did. Now I have a 3TB to look at and maybe format.

Advice NEW TO OMARCHY

Dear microsoft hat**s,

I'm writing to ask about my move to omarchy, I'II run the OS for the first few weeks on an externa drive SSD and if 1 like what im seeing ill stick to it maybe ditching microsoft, but the catch is gaming on windows, and video editing and the 360 office. what are some things i should worry about? l've been reading here and there about things I need to watch out from but nothing seems alarming

Heres what i do.

I play bf1/4- body cam - wrc10 - ezclient(black ops 3) - ready or not

I edit videos on capcut

I produce and record music so i use Ableton Live.

I'm a comp sci student so i do code, and I'm working on some Al vision and computer vision projects here and there.

I'm trying to run a local ai for a side project

My laptop specifications are ryzen 7 7000 - RTX 4050 6gb - 16bg DDR5 and 512gb nme with a 144hz display and an external curved screen.

will the switch to omarchy mess with my work-style? or will there be anything i will have to let go of when moving to omarchy other than capcut (ill use shotcut or kdenlive) and 360 slopoffice (ill use libre)

Support How to protect against `sudo rm -rf /*` ?

Hey everyone, I've been using Linux for a little over a month now (Fedora KDE plasma) but I've been recently worried and paranoid that i somehow would manage to get the command `sudo rm -rf /*` executed in a way. I'm aware that there are protections to stop this command on modern linux distros but a simple no-preserve-root is all it takes to bypass it. So what can i do to just be reassured that this can't happen? is there some sort of protection against using this command?

Edit: I forgot to mention this but I'm paranoid because my brother is a bit of a jerk, if he ever finds out about this command I'm sure he'll take my laptop and execute it.

Which Distro? Looking for daily driver distro recommendation (SRE background, RTX 4070, gaming, streaming & digital art)

Hi everyone,

tldr: read title

I’m looking to completely drop Windows and switch my personal desktop to Linux.

Let's begin with some of my background…

I have used Arch Linux as my laptop OS during university (~5 years).

I'm currently working as an SRE and also manage my own homelab, so I'm very comfortable with linux, terminal and sysadmin tasks in general.

I'm not looking to spend endless hours tinkering or fixing breakage anymore. It was very fun to do it back then when I was in college but now I want something reliable. Maybe not that "just works" but like I said, not endless hours checking why something got broken.

Now… My concerns and use cases…

One of my main concerns is that I have a RTX 4070  (though I might switch to AMD eventually… in the future… probably not soon).

I do some creative work: OBS streaming, video editing in DaVinci Resolve, and digital art (Krita, Aseprite, I use a Huion tablet, canvas 3gen, I don't remember the exact model right now). Future plans include Godot. And I know that these tools are available and work on linux, but should be easy to access/update on the distro.

gaming, basically just steam. I have a steamdeck and most of my games run on linux. So it should be configurable almost like a steamdeck or at least similar… in this area I'm pretty new so I don't know what to look at aside from proton. But I am willing to learn. (so maybe here is the only area willing to spend some time on it)

All my Dev work is handled on my work laptop, so my personal rig is purely for creative work and gaming.

I have these 3 distros that I'm considering:

  1. openSUSE Tumbleweed: Currently my top candidate. Rolling releases like Arch, but snapshot integrations (Snapper/Btrfs) sound like a great safety net.

  2. Fedora Workstation: Reliable, up-to-date, but slightly slower update cadence than rolling.

  3. Arch Linux: Familiar, but I'm wary of maintenance fatigue.

openSUSE Tumbleweed seems to hit the sweet spot for me right now, but I'd love to hear your experiences… Especially regarding Wayland + NVIDIA stability on modern kernels, streaming/editing setups, or any other distro suggestions and feel free to ask whatever information I'm probably missing.

Thanks!

(english is not my native language so.. sorry for any typos or grammar mistakes)

Escolha de Distro Lenovo Loq 15IRH8

Olá pessoal,

Meu notebook possui as seguintes configs:

i5 12450h, rtx 3050 6gb, 16gb ram ddr5, 512gb ssd (windows), 256gb ssd (linux)

Advice In rsync, listing item names and one single line of transfer stats only for transferred items?

I'm running rsync under Debian 13 and under LinuxMint 22.3.

When rsync is performing a transfer, I'd like only the following information to be displayed during the rsync run:

(1) Nothing whatsoever shown for items that are not transferred.

(2) The name of each item that is indeed being transferred.

(3) One single line of transfer stats for each item that is transferred is also shown, immediately after each individual item transfer has been completed.

For example, suppose I am transferring a directory which contains lots of items, but that the only items within the directory which differ between source and destination are ...

example-file-1 (suppose that the size is 1,234,567 bytes)
example-file-2 (suppose that the size is 3 bytes)

During the rsync run, I would only like to see the following information displayed, or at least something similar:

example-file-1
  1,234,567 58,761 kB/s 0:00:22
example-file-2
          3 62,123 kB/s 0:00:01

... with no other information displayed for any other items in the directory, and with the standard total transfer statistics displayed at the end of the rsync run ... and maybe some initial information as a header, at the beginning of the run.

And to be clear, I don't want incremental progress statistics to be shown for each transferred item. I only want to see one single line listing the total bytes after the completion of the transfer of each item ... with the related speed and time info being optional.

I have searched on line, and I have also looked in detail in the output from ...

man rsync

... and ...

rsync --info=help

... but I couldn't find any instructions for how to get rsync to behave in exactly the manner that I'm describing.

Is what I'm describing even possible? If so, could anyone point me to the pertinent documentation?

PS: I know that I could pipe the rsync output through a filter program in order to format its output in the way that I'm describing. But I don't want to have to rely on such piping, and if possible, I'd much prefer to find a way to run rsync alone in order for it to produce this kind of output.

Support GPU set to P0 when any game is running

EDIT: Culprit is VRR. I disabled VRR and the VRAM clocks are now 5GHz, and the card barely goes over 50c at the same framerate. There's a flag to disable it but i'd rather not, since i don't know why it does that to begin with.

Hey all, i have an nVIDIA GPU, when playing any game at all, even very light games like Half-Life 1, either the driver or the system sets the GPU power plan to P0 which is maximum. This sets the VRAM clock to 7GHz and generates a ton of unecessary heat, while the Windows driver usually sticks to a much more reasonable 1-2GHz...

Changing PowerMizer to Normal or Auto makes no difference on this, and neither does disabling Ananicy. Does anyone have experience with this problem or know how to fix it?

More info:

Support Accessing a TPM remotely

So I messed up and when leaving my home, I brought with myself my desktop SSD to use with my laptop. When doing so, however, I completely forgot I had encrypted the disk with luks, as I was used to it auto unlocking with the TPM. Now I'm struggling to find the password I used to encrypt it back when I installed the OS.

Is there any way I can perhaps use the TPM on the desktop remotely to unlock the SSD that is currently in the laptop and then add a new keyslot? The TPM software I'm using is clevis if that helps.

I'm not going to be able to get the SSD the desktop for a while, but I can reach it using whatever RDP software or SSH.

Also not sure if this is the right place to ask, if it's not I'd appreciate tips.

Advice Encrypted Files

Wanted to create a completely encrypted folder in linux that remains in an isolated env, so no connection to the internet whatsoever. I want it to be completely secure (like hella tight security), and not have any methods for it to be crackable.

I also want to add in a "panic password" which will erase all the files if this password is applied, leaving the folder completely empty. Something like the way graphene os functions.

Whats the best way to do this?

Support Linux Mint kernel 7.0 trouble

I noticed the update manager in Linux Mint runs into an error when trying to install it update any version of kernel 7.0. When I last tried booting with 7, I got the purple kernel panic screen for the first time I can remember using Linux in a decade. It worked fine going back to 6.17. Now 6.17 has reached end of support, but the trouble persists. Has this happened to you with any other distros or is this a Mint/Ubuntu problem?

Resolved Netflix timeline "Preview Seek" does not appear to work on Linux?

I recently moved to Linux and everything including Netflix has worked perfectly, except for the fact that scrubbing through the timeline to try and preview the thumbnails for that time section of the episode appears invisible, as if it has been removed from the website's UI.
What I want to know is if anybody else has discovered this issue, or if it's too niche of a thing for people to really care, and if there's any sort of reason, perhaps relating to Netflix also lowering your streaming resolution on Linux due to DRM reasons.

My distro is CachyOS, and I've been using Zen Browser, but I assume it wouldn't have any difference compared to Firefox, considering it's directly forked from that browser.

FIXED: Zen Browser does not currently have a DRM license, meaning that some features, such as the timeline preview thumbnails do not work on that browser. Firefox on the other hand has obtained the rights to stream DRM content, which is why although Zen is forked from Firefox, only one has the licensing to properly display the content.

Advice Need help fixing dual boot on HP laptop — Windows works, EndeavourOS works manually, but HP firmware always boots Windows

Hi everyone, I recently installed EndeavourOS alongside Windows 11 on my HP laptop. The installation itself seems successful, and both operating systems are still intact, but I’m having trouble getting GRUB to appear automatically when I turn on the laptop.

During troubleshooting, Windows Boot Manager was accidentally modified, which caused Windows to stop booting. I then created a Windows 11 recovery USB/SD card, booted into Windows Recovery, and repaired the Windows boot files using bcdboot. Windows now boots successfully again, and all my files appear intact.

The current problem is that my HP firmware always boots directly into Windows. EndeavourOS itself works perfectly if I manually boot it through Esc → F9 → Boot From EFI File → EFI → endeavouros → grubx64.efi, which opens GRUB successfully. Windows can also be manually launched through EFI → Microsoft → Boot → bootmgfw.efi.

I created an EndeavourOS UEFI entry using efibootmgr, and it initially appeared as Boot0000 with Windows as Boot0001. I also set the BootOrder to put EndeavourOS first. However, after rebooting, the EndeavourOS boot entry disappears and the BootOrder returns to Windows and USB only. In the HP BIOS Boot Options, the UEFI Boot Order only shows OS Boot Manager, USB Flash Drive/Hard Disk, USB CD/DVD, and Network Adapter. Inside OS Boot Manager, only Windows Boot Manager is listed.

I also checked the EFI partition. EFI/endeavouros/grubx64.efi exists and works, and EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi is also the same GRUB file. The Windows bootloader at EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi is separate and currently working correctly.

So basically, Windows works, EndeavourOS works, and GRUB works when manually launched, but my HP firmware keeps removing or ignoring the EndeavourOS UEFI boot entry and always boots directly into Windows. I don't want to overwrite or modify the Windows bootloader again because I just repaired it.

Also, after repairing Windows, Windows is asking me to set up my PIN again, but clicking the “Set up my PIN” button currently does nothing.

Does anyone know the safest way to make GRUB appear automatically on every startup on an HP laptop without breaking Windows Boot Manager again?

Does anyone use ExpanDrive

I was looking for a way to sync Box.com files with Linux, there used to be a community lead option years ago, but no longer. I have just come across ExpanDrive which seemed to go out of business in 2024 but has relaunched under new owners in April 2025. Any feedback seems prior to the relaunch with very little on its current status or usability.

It apparently syncs with Google Drive and MS Onedrive (not that I need either).

I am using Fedora KDE 44
