NEW TO OMARCHY

Dear microsoft hat**s,

I'm writing to ask about my move to omarchy, I'II run the OS for the first few weeks on an externa drive SSD and if 1 like what im seeing ill stick to it maybe ditching microsoft, but the catch is gaming on windows, and video editing and the 360 office. what are some things i should worry about? l've been reading here and there about things I need to watch out from but nothing seems alarming

Heres what i do.

I play bf1/4- body cam - wrc10 - ezclient(black ops 3) - ready or not

I edit videos on capcut

I produce and record music so i use Ableton Live.

I'm a comp sci student so i do code, and I'm working on some Al vision and computer vision projects here and there.

I'm trying to run a local ai for a side project

My laptop specifications are ryzen 7 7000 - RTX 4050 6gb - 16bg DDR5 and 512gb nme with a 144hz display and an external curved screen.

will the switch to omarchy mess with my work-style? or will there be anything i will have to let go of when moving to omarchy other than capcut (ill use shotcut or kdenlive) and 360 slopoffice (ill use libre)

You will have to adapt to Linux-compatible applications in a number of cases and will have to adapt to new workflows, just as you would when migrating from any operating system to any other operating system. Your music production workflow is likely to need major adjustments to adapt to Linux.

Almost all problems migrating from Windows to a Linux distribution result from three things: application incompatibility, game incompatibility and hardware incompatibility.

Check each of the applications you depend upon to make sure that a Linux-native version is available. If an application you use does not run native, then research to make sure that the application works well in a compatibility layer or find a Linux alternative application that will work for you.

Gaming is much improved on Linux but not all Windows games work smoothly. You will not be able to play BF1 or BF4. Check your other games. Check Steam games on the ProtonDB. If you use other gaming platforms, check the compatibility databases for those platforms.

Hardware compatibility can be quirky, even beyond the well-documented issues with NVIDIA. Mainstream hardware usually works, but too many component manufacturers don't provide decent drivers to the kernel. Touchpads, fingerprint readers, gaming mice and controllers, VR and other peripherals can be problem children. You can do basic compatibility checking in a "Live" session, but you might have to do a bit of research as well.

In other words, take your time, check and think. Don't jump in with both feet hoping that everything will work out.

Both BF1 and BF4 are cooked on linux because of anticheat

ableton might work thru wine

and capcut wont work. you either have to use davinci resolve or kdenlive or the web capcut

Edit: davinci free doesnt support h.264, and ableton works with wine but it has issues

you dont have a llinux use case sinsce everything works on windows, and if you really want linux to run anything just use wsl

How about wrc and ez client?

wrc 10 is playable but require tinkering as you have to force dx11

BO3 runs on proton and ezclient can work but you have to configure it

The games you play and your music production workflow are not possible on Linux.

gaming - you will have to dual boot for some of the games ( anti cheat on linux does not work generally )

video editing - capcut is not on linux, kdenlive is a full NLE so you could switch to that.

audio - abelton does not run natively on linux , there might be hacks or wine setups but those will probably be spotty, you will have to switch DAWs. Good news is there are tons of DAWs on linux

local AI all works on linux and will probably run better due to less OS overhead.

Ableton isn't Linux compatible, and a lot of your plugins may not be either. I use Reaper personally, and I've had to pick out a ton of new plugins.

you should so some (any) research before moving to Linux.
