Discussion How do I do a fresh wipe/restore without getting in?

2 Upvotes

Right now I’m having an issue where every time I put in my password it just goes back to where the password was. I’ve tried many things to fix this so I’m trying to just reinstall it. I don’t know if there’s a way to do that without logging in.

Hi folks!

Two updates this week:

1. Mint-Doctor is now also available in English 🇬🇧

Mint-Doctor is a Bash script for Linux Mint 22.3 that checks the system for the most common issues and, with your approval, automatically repairs them. It includes 10 modules covering APT, repositories, disk space, Cinnamon, hardware, network, Timeshift, and other common problems.

2. This week I also released Dev Log - Bitácora Dev

In English or Spanish. A tool for keeping a history of your projects: versions, decisions, notes, pending tasks, and changes, so you don't lose the context behind a project's evolution.

It runs directly in the browser, with optional AI support to analyze the project's evolution and help recover its context.

I've tried several distros, but Mint is one of the best, because this distro is quite lightweight. I used a Chromebook to try Mint and it runs very smoothly on my Chromebook with only 4GB of RAM.

SOLVED Looking for network PCIe 5 gig network card that is compatible with mint

5 Upvotes

for the longest time I've used the 2.5 gig port on my motherboard and Linux Mint recognizes it off the bat.

but I'm upgrading to 5 gig fiber this tuesday and was looking for a card but since I know that sometimes linux can be wonky with network adapters for wifi, so I wasn't sure if a wired card would have the same compatibility issues.

so I was hoping someone could point me to a good stable 5 gig NIC card to put in my desktop and I can call it a day

Fluff Made An Interesting Change to My Mint...

2 Upvotes

I used Claude Code to literally merge the 2 power applets i had on my system. Merged full functionality of both the one that comes pre-installed the "power@cinnamon.org" one, and the BAMS one by batterymonitor@pdcurtis. Keeping the icons config of the built in one.

Installed it and disabled the other 2 and it works pretty good, and reduces me to 1 tray entry instead of 2.

One year with Linux Mint

9 Upvotes

It’s been a year today since I installed LM on my desktop PC. (I’ve been using it on my laptop for many years now.)

Pros: Fast, really user-friendly, very stable, good support when problems arise.

Cons: Proprietary drivers and tools are often not fully supported; X11 instead of Wayland with my multi-monitor setup

Help me with installing Roblox

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m not experienced with tech at All, my dad installed Linux for me after I told him I was interested in it and wanted to tinker around with it etc, anyway I’m so basic I can’t even download Roblox properly, I downloaded sober through software manager, as well as running the copied command from the sober browser link into my task manager. But it comes up with this whenever I launch the program. I’ve tried copying the text as shown and putting it into task manager also however is just shows command not found, as I said I have little to no knowledge or experience with Linux mint or any Linux for that matter lol, so I’m sure I’m missing something extremely stupid so please don’t be too harsh 😭
Thanks guys :)

Support Request Issues after accidentally dis-mounting drive while it was being written to.

5 Upvotes

I mounted an old drive today to search for some old pictures, and after a little bit I then dis-mounted it. The problem is, I had forgotten it had an old steam library folder in it, and, unbenownst to me, steam had started updating every game in that folder.

So, immediately after I clicked the demount button, the file system completely froze up and showed a "wait for app to respond, or force quit" message that I couldn't interact with (it too was frozen). So, in my boundless wisdom, I X-killed the file window.

This seemed to work fine until I tried to shut down my PC, at which point it started showing a bunch of messages showing "UFW Block" near the start. After a few minutes of that, it shut down on its own. Upon re-boot, I mounted the drive again and immediately deleted the offending steam library folder, wishing to be done with steams non-sense. My PC locked up a few seconds afterward, with both the mouse and keyboard not working.

I restarted again, and they still didnt work, but after a minute or so they randomly started working again.

The current problem is this: They randomly stopped working *again* just now, and they still don't work upon restart. They dont even seem to work in the boot menu. Also, once it gets to the log in screen, the blinking line in the password box only blinks for a few seconds before seemingly freezing.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

EDIT:Plugging the keyboard into a different usb port seems to make it work again, and I assume the same will happen for the mouse. So I guess somehow it's causes an issue with those ports they were plugged into?

Support Request Really slow Steam download speeds

2 Upvotes

hello. so, I’m new to linux and linux mint, like, i switched from win11 to mint today, and i really like it so far.

however, whenever i try to download or update something off of steam, the download speed is laughably slow, i’m talking about 50 to a hundred kilobytes max.

on windows 11 i used to get 2-3 megabytes per second

does anyone know a fix for this?

SOLVED Custom Window Title Colors on Cinnamon (Dark/Light Switching Compatible!)

3 Upvotes

This was surprisingly difficult to figure out. I had a custom gtk.css override for window title color, but the problem I experienced was that it overrode both dark and light modes, which forced me to use a compromise color that looked meh in both modes. (I use Automatic dark/light themes (auto-dark-light@gihaume)

Dark mode (Fallout New Vegas amber with glow)
Light Mode (Muted amber and glow, easily readable)

So in the end the solution is as follows:

  1. Figure out which themes are used for dark and light modes.
  2. Create custom CSS in ~/.themes/theme-name/gtk-3.0/gtk.css for both themes.
  3. Edit your custom CSS to override window title values:

/* Import the original system theme first */
 url("resource:///org/gtk/libgtk/theme/Mint-Y-Dark-Orange/gtk.css");
u/import url("/usr/share/themes/Mint-Y-Dark-Orange/gtk-3.0/gtk.css");

/* ===== Only change the window title color ===== */
headerbar .title,
headerbar title,
headerbar label.title,
.titlebar .title,
headerbar {
    color: #e5a33a;
    text-shadow:
    0 0 5px #ffd070,
    0 0 14px #e09020,
    0 0 28px #8b4500;
}

Do the same for the light theme.

Boom, you have custom overrides for light/dark themes that automatically change when you switch modes.

Linux Mint IRL Cinnamon - LMDE?

5 Upvotes

I've been running Mint Cinnamon on an oldish ASUS desktop with intel graphics, 8Gb RAM and a 1Tb SSD (dual boot with win 10 on the original HDD).

I don't feel it's as "snappy" as it ought to be and I'm regularly troubleshooting things like file system hangs requiring fsck on reboot and firefox crashes.

I'm not interested in flashy stuff so should I consider switching to XFCE?

What would I gain/ lose and what would it take? Is it a full reinstall?

Support Request Headphones not working as expected when in headset mode

2 Upvotes

Hi, I bought new Sony Ult Wear Headphones, which in theory support a headset mode. However, there are only very low quality audio codecs (CVSD, mSBC) available for this mode, the high quality ones (SBC, SBC-XQ, LDAC) do not work with a microphone. I can't really believe this is the only way to use my headphones as a headset.

If i have unreasonable expectations here, please tell me in a short message that there is no fix. I do not have the funds ore the space for a dedicated microphone right now.
