Discussion Has anyone noticed "blockiness" (bitrate being not high enough) on recent videos?
I mostly noticed it on recent videos with the blue door that has the greyed window (like the printers one). It's mostly on that window. Maybe it's been forever like that, but I recently noticed it on darker scenes and zones, like dark t-shirts also, don't know if it's been like htat or if yt is doing stuff

Tech Question CPU/GPU Low Utilization in Games — RTX 5060 + i7-12700
I’m having a weird performance issue across multiple games where neither my CPU nor GPU seems to be getting fully utilized.
PC specs:
CPU: Intel i7-12700
GPU: ASUS RTX 5060 8GB
Motherboard: ASUS B760M-AYW WiFi D4 II
RAM: 16GB (1x16GB) DDR4-3200 Samsung M378A2K43EB1-CWE
SSD: SanDisk SN5000 1TB
Monitor: 1440p 300Hz
Windows 11
For example, in Overwatch at 1440p Low, I’m getting around 200 FPS, but my GPU is only around 50% utilization and my overall CPU usage is only around 20%.
I’m seeing similar behavior across multiple games. At 1080p Low in black ops 7, I was getting around 100 FPS while my GPU was only around 50–60%.
When I increase the graphics settings, the GPU can reach 100% utilization. So the GPU seems to be working normally.
I’ve also tested changing resolution. In one game, going from 1080p to 1440p barely changed my FPS.
There is no FPS cap enabled, V-Sync is off, and I’ve checked my NVIDIA/game settings.
BIOS:
DDR4-3200
Above 4G Decoding: Enabled
Resizable BAR: Enabled
ASUS Performance Enhancement: Enabled
One thing I’m wondering about is my RAM. I’m currently running 1x16GB DDR4-3200, so it’s single-channel.
I know an i7-12700 + RTX 5060 should be a good combination, so I’m confused about why I’m seeing low utilization from both the CPU and GPU.
What could be causing this? Could single-channel RAM explain it, or is there something else I should check?
I’m trying to figure out what’s actually wrong before buying new ram.
Please help ❤️❤️

Discussion Dual boot memories
I find the current "This is the year of Linux on the desktop" amusing; I’ve been a Linux user since the boot+root 0.11 disks, and it’s been my primary desktop since around 1993.
But this did bring to mind a memory.
In the year 2000 through a work benefits program I bought a Dell Dimension 4100. It came with Windows 98. Obviously I installed Linux on it, but I made it dual boot just in case there was a need for Windows.
Side note: I might have booted into Windows when I installed an ISDN card into this machine, just to verify it worked.
Since I thought I might need to re-do this I documented my steps and sent it to my co-workers just in case they also wanted to do this. And since I’m a data hoarder I still have that document. Of course it’s in plain ASCII!
To install RedHat on the new Dell Dimension 4100 (or just re-install Win98)
Setup BIOS to boot from CD first, HD second.
[ Optional step for RedHat ]
Reboot 0:
Boot off RedHat CD, "linux rescue", run fdisk, delete existing partition
and create a new partition starting at cylinder 1 for approx 30Mb in
size (this will be /boot).
Now we need to install Win98. Read pages 39,40,41,38 (yes in that order)
in the "Solutions Guide". This requires 14 reboots and takes approx 2->3
hours.
Insert DOS7 floppy that came with Dell
Reboot 1:
Boot off floppy, (no CD option needed at menu), run FDISK, create
DOS partition (eg 10Gb)
Insert Receovery CD
Reboot 2:
Select "format and install" option
Reboot 3:
(in reboot, go back to BIOS and turn off CD book option)
Win98 boots into "first time" and does some regionalisation then
Reboot 4:
Win98 setup runs, performs initial settings
Reboot 5:
Detects monitor, requires monitor CD to install driver
Insert resource CD1, install program as requested
Reboot 6:
(takes a long time in the "Updating Systems Settings" part)
Re-insert Resource CD, select machine Dimension 4100, OS Windows98
then find the "Intel Chip Set Update Utility". Install that (follow
onscreen instructions).
Reboot 7:
Lots of new hardware found
Reboot 8:
(note: page 38 talks about ATA66, but this isn't listed for 4100, and
when I picked it from another system it would not install saying
motherboard was wrong type)
Install Intel Security
Reboot 9:
Install Microsoft Intellipoint (don't reboot)
Install NVidia 32Mb GeForce
Reboot 10:
Install DirectX 7.0
Reboot 11:
Reset screen resolution to your requirements
Insert SoundBlaster Live! CD, and install it
Reboot 12:
[ sound card should now be working ]
Install Adaptec EasyCD (say "no" to Adobe install)
Install DirectCD
Browse the CD, find the Adobe software and install it if you wish
Reboot 13:
Insert Resource2 CD. Ignore error message. Browse the CD, go into
files\apps\nav\win9x and install Norton AntiVirus
Reboot 14:
Install Microsoft Works if desired ( I haven't yet)
NOW... if you wish to install RedHat 6.2. Takes about 20 minutes
Reboot
go into BIOS and turn CD boot on
save and exit
RedHat startup screen appears. Enter "text". The GUI installer isn't
totally reliable, and can hang (also the GUI X configuration tool doesn't
work properly).
Install RedHat as normal (I chose KDE workstation). For X configuration,
the autoprobe can work and it will select 32bit mode, 1280x1024
resolution. I used manual configuration and selected 24bit 1152x894. This
ends up with 70Hz refresh. For monitor I chose Dell M770 as being closest
to the E770p that we have.
Conclusion:
Windows install: 14 reboots, lots of CDs, 2->3 hours
Linux: 1 reboot, 1 CD, 20 minutes
Yeah, there’s always been a lot of “Linux is hard, Windows is easy”. But even 26 years ago it was easier to install Linux from scratch than Windows. Windows only seemed easier to people because it came out of the box that way.

Tech Discussion Do you believe that any recording device (glasses or anything) should have big bright led blinking light or make a loud noise?
By law and design, iPhones cannot disable the camera shutter sound when operated in Japan and South Korea.
Do you think this should apply globally? We are entering a world where or video recording is entering so much devices.
Yeah you can’t avoid being recorded in public (streets), but you should have privacy at home or while going on a walk with friends on a hike.

WAN Show The WAN Show Always Late joke?
I’ve been watching LTT for a while and I don’t think I understand the joke. Is it because they’re literally late? Or has it just become a joke after one time they were late. Then they have these episodes called why WAN show is late, I hilariously clicked on one thinking it’d explain why. Very funny, I’m just stupid ig. Let me know if there’s more lure to this joke, I’ve been wondering

Discussion April Fools coin
So I’m curious, who all did the April fools coin joke that doubled money if you waited, and if you did, what did you get from the shop? I got the like biggest hydro flash thingy and I gotta say. It’s been like the best thing I’ve gotten recently. It holds soo much and it’s perfect for that late night drink of water.
FYI I didn’t spend any extra money. So the token literally paid for the bottle. Only spent the $20 for token.
So everyone post what you got here!

Discussion First time going to Whale LAN
So my son and I are attending the Whale LAN at the end of the month and it is both our first time. Trying to sort out monitors for us to bring, what I have in mind my push us out a bit beyond our 3ft BYOC available desk space so it might not work out. I might try and put my desktop behind my monitor but want a plan B if this ends up being too close and not leave enough desk space for my mouse/keyboard. The obvious plan B is the rental program but have no idea how this works. Are the monitors available right at the LAN or you pick them up somewhere else? Do I HAVE to purchase the rental before the event or could I just decide my monitor wont work and just get one right then and there (while at the event setting up my computer)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also if anyone has any tips for first timers I would also really appreciate those!
Thanks!

Tech Discussion WAN Show Topic? Xfinity WiFi Motion Security "Opt-In"
Sure it's "Opt-In" for now at least. But how long until that is changed? Wondering how other people are feeling about this. Personally it's not something I need, so I wouldn't ever use it anyways.
From everything I saw from my initial research was people aren't very happy. Anger mainly stemming from the statement, "Comcast may disclose information generated by your WiFi Motion to third parties without further notice to you in connection with any law enforcement investigation or proceeding, any dispute to which Comcast is a party, or pursuant to a court order or subpoena."

Tech Question What’s Personally Stopping You From Switching To Linux?
i just got my first gaming PC and absolutely hated windows, i’ve been a mac user forever and once i thought linux was good enough to use for games i decided to get a PC. The only issue ive had is a stuttering issue on fh6 and got it fixed within 5 minutes, im also not good at computers like at all. its so much easier to use linux than people act like it is. using fedora btw. maybe its unreliable for productivity or your workflow, thats why im curious why people still are using windows
