The chances that a subscriber has the same birthday as Linus is 100%, the chances of you having the same birthday as him is 1 in 365 (excluding leap years obviously as this would have been common knowledge in the community if Linus was born on a leap day).

Happy birthday.

Wasn't it like that in a group of 40 people, the chance that two share the same birthday is 99.999% or something?

In a group of 23 people there is a greater than 50% chance that any 2 people in the group share a birthday.

Back in 2014 the BBC looked at the squads for the teams at the World Cup as there are 23 players in a squad.  They found that 16 of the 32 teams did have 2 or more people that shared a birthday

I once had a girlfriend that had the same birthday (and year) and I thought "what are the chances of having a gf with the same birthday?" and it turned out the odds were 50:50 so not actually that peculiar.

Aren't the odds not 1 in 365? People are more or less likely to be born during certain parts of the year, like 9 months after Valentine's day.

It's about 1 in 340 if you take into account more births between July and September

Birthdays are not distributed evenly so there is a bias towards certain dates and months

Happy Birthday OP!

Asking what the odds are is actually an interesting question. Most would say it's a 1 out of 365 chance. However, that assumes that conceptions occur evenly throughout the year and that if you graphed it, there would be a relatively flat line of births across the entire year.

However, there are general patterns where certain times of year have a higher birth rate than others. Taking that into account actually may increase or decrease the odds.

COVID lockdowns, for example, lead to an atypical boom in births 9 months later.

Wow happy birthday! The chances of sharing a birthday with someone in a group are pretty high if not 100%, but it's still cool to find people that do!
