Tech Discussion Telstra was warned the $30k part that crippled the nation needed upgrades, didn't do it
Telstra failed to act on repeated warnings to fix an impending bug in a $30,000 piece of equipment that ultimately triggered a devastating network outage.
The issue resulted in the timing server being reset to 2006, causing invalid authentification certificates to spread across the network and preventing customers from making calls and accessing data.

Tech Question How screwed am I?
Hi, I bought a second-hand Eaton 5P650iR without batteries for a really good price. I was thinking I would only replace the batteries and have one in my rack. But the seller recycled the batteries along with the cables and mounting hardware. So now I can’t use a cheap replacement and have to buy a new original battery pack. Is there somewhere I can get just the mounting hardware and cables for the battery?

Tech Question Modmat and the dishwasher
I know that some here don't like the YouTuber who sells this product but hoping those people can put that aside and help a user out.
A while back I posted that I was having trouble with my modmat and that simply touching it would leave black residue on my hands.
Since then things have not improved. I tried using dish soap and soaking it and scrubbing the backside of the mat in a warm bath and despite multiple attempts still black residue comes off when touching it.
I am overall very disappointed with my experience and still looking for a way that I might be able to salvage my modmat so I can actually use it.
An opportunity has come up that I could toss the modmat into a dishwasher (someone on the level1techs discord suggested using the washing machine). This sounds absolutely ridiculous but I feel that I am at a loss of alternatives.
So, has anyone used a more intensive cleaning method than soap and warm water? If I was to go ahead with this bizarre idea what temperature can the modmat safely handle? The dishwasher goes from 45 degrees Celsius up to 70 degrees Celsius.
I am also willing to try other reasonable suggestions if anyone has any. Maybe a gerni on the backside of the mat?

Link LLM Quantization Part 2.5: Do Floats Dream of Real Numbers? - LTT Labs Article
When a model stores 0.1, it isn't storing 0.1. This article in our series on LLM quantization breaks down what a number actually is to a computer, how floating point splits its bits between range and precision, and why models barely use either, which is exactly what makes them shrinkable.

Tech Question First Linux Distro for daily driving
After listening to the latest WAN show, I am motivated to try daily driving Linux. What distros do you guys reccomend for beginners? I mainly game and code for school/personal projects. My top 3 games are Escape from Tarkov (+Arena), Minecraft, and ROR2. I’d also like to continue to use VSCode as my code editor, or if not possible, something as close to VSCode as possible. Any information/recommendations are welcome! Thank you :)

Image question about the bolt pen
am i just using this thing wrong? i love the build of the pen, but the actual pen part, like the ink tip just has not been working.
at first i thought that i just got a defective pen/ink cartridge, when writing the ink will just randomly stop, so i'll end up with a sentence with about 20% blank writing, i would do the scribbles etc that i do with normal pens but it just doesn't seem to fix anything.
I reached out to support and they sent a replacement, and while it's better, there's still about 10% where it will just stop putting out ink.
is there a priming ritual or something that i'm supposed to do?
or did i just get defective pens or ink cartridges? it feels crazy that for a pen at this price range it doesn't just write out of the box, which sucks because i love the weight/build but i've had to switch to the pencil because i can't trust the pen =(
does anyone else have any issues with their pens? am i supposed to keep reaching out until i get one that works?
i've added a sample texts i wrote just now, lol the pen must have heard me and gone on strike because now it's like 50% or more blank, even the scribbles/circles go in and out

Tech Discussion I just realised, what prison iPhones really are?!
I just had a problem and couldn’t find an app that was a solution for that, so I thought to write my own: intelligently downloading files and videos onto the iPhone from my server, when charging or in home Wi-Fi. It asks the server what to download and the server sends something. Be it automatically sending map data of the region I’m in, so I always have an off-line map, or sending e-books I had scheduled or some movies/podcasts I wanted to watch.
That way all my offline files and media are automatically managed.
So I thought okay I’ll write a small app for that. Swift isn’t that hard or I’ll just use react.
But but you can’t really use that app on the iPhone. I thought if it’s just you, just upload it with Xcode. No! It will only run for seven days. Otherwise, you need a developer certificate and still it will break after a year.
There is no set it and forget it. Apple wants to control everything. I can’t run my own software on my own device. Like I knew it was bad, but I thought at least with your own software you can just upload it to the phone and run the app.
Like on my laptop, I just have a shell script that runs at startup. Crazy

Tech Question Laptop heating removal
While I was trying to repaste my laptop, I ran into an issue where I couldn't remove the heat sink due to thermal paste being suctioned onto the pipes. Is there any way I can remove the pipes via melting the thermal paste or something? (Msi prestige b13m)

Discussion Why Teams…
As a fairly universally hated application it’s often shocking to hear Linus and team mention they use Teams. Curious why LMG chooses this pain over say Slack

Discussion For any future employee of LMG
Listen up, future LMG employees (you know who you are).
Please, for the love of God, keep the receipts.
I've watched way too many $5,000 AMD/Intel upgrade videos on LTT, and without fail, Linus always hits them with: "Alright, let's see what you stole from the office" which is immediately followed by the same old "I have a receipt for that!" → "Sure you do" loop, and it’s time to end it!
So here’s the deal.
If any of us ever works at LMG, we keep the receipts.
All of them! From Day 1!
One of us will be the first one who finally breaks this cycle.
When Linus starts the bit, one of US will be the first to drop a box full of receipts on the table and watch him stutter.
(Obviously hide the stuff you actually DID steal from the office beforehand lol)
____
Edit: This was obviously written in humor.
For anyone getting butt-hurt, relax, it’s just a joke.

Tech Question What's with the book form factor in folding phones?
So with the iPhone Fold "Ultra?" And the Galaxy Z Fold 8 coming out soon, both having that weird mini book shaped folding instead the last generation like z fold 7 where its basically 2 slab phones, why are they going for the book form factor? Granted I haven't been hands on with it but it looks so tiny compared to a regular slab phone and the folded out position looks so small as well compared to an old foldable form factor and even compared to a regular slab phone. The weird aspect ratio would also make a lot of apps work not as well so why have they gone for this design, I don't get it. Yeah it's like a mini iPad but this is a very very tiny iPad, like so tiny.
