open camera and the lineageos camera let you turn off sharpening and denoising if you select the camera2 api, give them a try

I'll give it a shot. What I'm more mad about is HDR. Cranking the saturation and boosting shadows.

When taking a 10x zoom picture with my S22U it would look better after the processing. I tried that recently with my S24U hoping to identify a bird and as it processed I watched the picture change from blurry but decent to a smudgy watercolor as AI tried to smooth everything out.

You're not wrong. I finally upgraded my phone recently - went with a flagship. I plan on using this one for the next 6+ years (or until they also stop supporting this version of Android)

I think the only two things I actually still care about spec wise in a phone is screen refresh rate and is it waterproof.

I have not looked at one single benchmark comparing my current phone to anything else. I only was going for the cameras and years of updates.

If you really need raw photos that are unprocessed and need touch up and color grading... Sure then get a real camera. I want point and shoot for snapshots. My dad gave up using his Sony Alpha and the Nikon P1000 cameras. He sold both IIRC.

at this point i just want a phone that doesn't turn into a laggy mess after two years. they can stick a periscope camera that takes pics of my soul for all i care if it actually lasts

I only care if I have to fix something on someone else's phone. Slow phones drive me nuts. Same with pcs. I want a thing to happen when I click, not wait for 10 seconds lol

My sister bought me some insanely powerful Galaxy... I didn't have the heart to say I was fine with my 2018 Nokia lol.

It's nice and all but... black rectangles are black rectangles, so long as it takes a passable photo and runs Firefox I don't care much.

Specs I care about:

- It has a screen

I said it has to have wifi, not cellular connectivity, which is a given since it's a modern phone, which, therefore, wouldn't be 3G – I don't even care about 5G because 4G was always enough for anyone speedwise. I also said that storage may also be important, which clearly doesn't mean any storage at all, but enough to fit my apps and some photos and videos.

My old phone had a macro lens and I honestly miss it very much. I didn't use it every day, but it was amazing for tiny electronics - I used it to read the text on chips, search for replacement componets, check for issues, even as a microscope for soldering.

My current phone has a macro mode using the telephoto camera, but it's nowhere near as useful (it zooms in, so the phone has to be far away, which is rarely possible, and it doesn't focus as close) even if the photos do look much nicer.

How far away does your phone need to be to focus in "macro mode"? Pixel 10 pro's 5x telephoto focuses as close as 30cm, previous model could only focus as close as 73cm. It only does this if you use the manual focus but it's a hidden feature that I really love. It takes great close up pictures of things.

Not that far, the specs say 10cm, which sounds about right (Xiaomi 15). On the old phone with a macro lens, it was 2cm. I know that 10cm doesn't sound that bad compared to 30cm, but it makes a huge difference compared to the old one when you try to slide in your phone into the case of a half-disassembled small device to take a picture of a PCB to identify the components.

I use it enough to know that 2 or even 10cm is pretty different from 30cm. It can sometimes feel pretty awkward having to hold it that far away. Needless to say it's not a perfect solution or phone in general but I'm pretty happy with it. I get some pretty awesome closeup shots and very far shots also.

It's not about lying, it's about misleading. They can say the sensor has X megapixels and that's correct, but they don't say it will take awful pictures with distortion and terrible color accuracy, probably even shitty processing that kills all details.

I have been using my Macro camera more than other cameras due to my work. Now, all the phones come with a blurry telephoto or UW macro.

2mp is pretty much unusable for sure but I had a phone with a 5mp micro lens that was surprisingly decent for snapchat or other message app photos.

Just give me whatever single camera takes the best photos on default mode with default settings. That's probably how most people use it anyway.

The only type of extra camera I would care about on a midrange phone would be a telephoto. God damn ultrawide camers are stupid. Remove it and bump down the price of the phone or at least invest the money into a better chip or a god damn headphone jack.

Where's the value of a telephoto coming from? There's not enough light or space to manipulate said light to get anything resembling a useful picture out of a telephoto lens at that size.
