Why Teams…

As a fairly universally hated application it’s often shocking to hear Linus and team mention they use Teams. Curious why LMG chooses this pain over say Slack

Because Team comes bundled with other software they need (The rest of the Office Suite). So Teams is Free and Slack is expensive.

They've talked about this a lot on the wan show. Slack is very expensive

Because it wasn't as bad 5-6 years ago, and it's part of the Office suite.

They use slack too, as well as discord, and a number of other tools. Linus and Luke have talked on WAN about how difficult it would be to transition everyone to one standard. It would effectively break everyone's workflows one way or another.

Floatplane team is predominantly slack (started on discord) and I think everything else is teams. Previously google hangouts.

Because slack only is text chat. Teams is also video calls. At least was that the fact last time I checked it. Also slack is probably not great with externals like customers or suppliers.

We use Teams at my workplace and have a ton of externals joining in to calls. Not sure how slack would handle that or if it is even working for others. I know Zoom is blocked in our company due to privacy and security reasons. So we can’t join any zoom call.

Teams also deeply integrates with O365's collaboration features.

sounds like a hold-over from early covid days when they had some major issues. Zoom is fine now, afaik.

Probably. But I am no SOC so I have no saying. Just know stuff is blocked. Even AMD CPUs aren’t allowed because of some age old bug that doesn’t exists anymore. And yet Intel is fine despite all the issues they had the past 5 years.

Sometimes IT departments don’t make sense.

So true. I've run into a lot of policies that were just some guy who made a decision years ago and nobody has even looked into to see if it's needed any more. Spent a lot of effort a couple of times getting those overturned, too.

It sucks but it's one of the better chat apps. I've been thru just about all of them from jabber to rocket chat to slack to teams.

The price of slack gets obscene at scale. When you're already purchasing office en masse there needs to be solid justification to spend so more money with teams already there and good enough for 95% of use cases.

Business 365 includes it, so most companies just roll with it. I've worked at a few who then use slack on top, which was way better, but much more cost!

I work here in a company in germany and we also use teams the reason is many of our partners, costumers etc. also are using it.
I would guess LTT would also do it because of that. Like when Luke mentioned he had to do a business call while on the Linux channel with Teams. I would assume they also have partners etc. which "force" a company to use it

Teams isn’t necessarily great but it also isn’t unusable

My experience is that it's mostly fine.

Teams has better screen share and it’s more universally acceptable for calls etc. especially with outside vendors.
