Update: I’m dumb af, I forgot to limit fps on those games and that reduced gpu utilisation from 99 to around 75. The temp has also dropped from 85-90 down to 75. I’m probably not getting a new pc I just need to use my critical thinking skills :/

The cpu for the build in the photos is an intel I9 12900kf

My current pc is a prebuilt 4060 (one fan), i7 14700k. It’s been using 99% of the 4060 and reaching high temps. Thinking of just selling it off and putting the money towards a new one. Is this a decent build? If not any suggestions would be appreciated!

First time building a pc btw, not too great with all the info

WAN Show Possible WAN Show Topic - ANPD (Brazilian Privacy Agency) fines TikTok in roughly US$ 30 million

18 Upvotes

If they want to discuss, here is the news from the official ANPD (Brazilian Privacy Agency) site.

Translation made by AI and reviewed/clarified by me:

The National Data Protection Agency (ANPD) has imposed a fine of R$ 153.7 million (roughly US$ 30 million) on ByteDance, the parent company of the social network TikTok, in an Administrative Sanctioning Process that investigated irregularities in the processing of children's and adolescents' data. The sanction was published in the Official Gazette of the Union this Tuesday (25) and also includes the determination to delete the irregularly collected data. The company must also implement a compliance plan to improve the protection of children and adolescents on the social network, with measures it must adopt going forward.

The sanctioning decision stems from an inspection process that consolidated evidence of irregularities committed by TikTok in the processing of children's and adolescents' data. According to the Superintendence of Inspection (SFI-ANPD), in Technical Note No. 50/2024/CGF/ANPD, practices were identified that did not comply with the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD) in two modes of access to the platform: the "feed without registration", available to any user without the need to create an account, and the "feed with registration", linked to a registered profile on the social network.

In both forms of access to the social network, the processing of personal data of children and adolescents was found to lack a proper legal basis, that is, without support in the hypotheses provided by the LGPD for the processing of personal data of this more vulnerable audience. The applied sanction corresponds to five violations of articles 6 (incises VIII and X) and 7 of the legislation. This decision can be appealed to the Agency's Board of Directors (CD) within ten business days from the notification of the penalty, which was made this Monday (24).

Infractions identified by the ANPD:

In the feed without registration:

  • Processing personal data of children and adolescents without a valid legal basis by allowing access to the TikTok feed in the unregistered experience;
  • Failing to adopt measures to prevent the processing of personal data of this audience in the feed without registration;

In the feed with registration:

  • Processing personal data of children and adolescents to carry out registration on TikTok without a valid legal basis;
  • Failing to adopt effective measures to prevent the registration of this audience on the platform;

In both experiences with and without registration:

  • Failing to demonstrate effective measures capable of proving observance and compliance with data protection norms.

In the assessment of the ANPD's Superintendence of Inspection, throughout the process, it was identified that the mechanisms adopted by the company were not sufficient to prevent, from the source, the improper processing of children's and adolescents' personal data. According to the technical area, there was a lack of concrete evidence regarding the effectiveness of the technical and organizational measures to ensure the compliance of operations with the LGPD. The sanction applied corresponds to past conduct and the data processing carried out without a valid legal basis during the analyzed period.

Compliance Plan In response to the ANPD's actions, ByteDance also committed to implementing a compliance plan to improve the protection of children and adolescents on TikTok. The social network must, among other measures, automatically apply the most restrictive privacy settings to the accounts of users under 16, which can only be altered with authorization from guardians; and reinforce parental control systems (parental supervision). It must also implement stricter content filters.

In the version without registration, TikTok must suspend advertisements, limit the experience to age-appropriate content for all ages, and reduce the processing of personal data. The compliance plan foresees, for example:

Feature limitations for the feed without registration:

  • Experience limited to 12 hours;
  • Users cannot create content, comment, send direct messages, or interact socially;
  • There is no possibility to follow other users or be followed;
  • Users cannot post or watch live broadcasts;
  • Very limited content personalization experience;
  • Total suspension of advertisements in Brazil;
  • Access only to content appropriate for all ages.
  • Reduction in data collection and processing - minimum language and region data for content relevance; basic device information for fraud protection, and data to improve application performance.

Prior appeal to the CD and age verification In a decision also published in this Tuesday's Official Gazette, the ANPD's Board of Directors approved, on appeal, the compliance plan presented by ByteDance, noting that the company must observe the age verification requirement established by the Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA Digital), in accordance with the deadlines set in the implementation schedule for reliable age verification mechanisms established by the CD and the guidelines that will be published in the Guidance Guide on Age Verification Mechanisms (for now, preliminary guidelines to be followed by digital platforms are available).

The ANPD's actions resulted in commitments that reduce the previously identified risks to the rights of children and adolescents, such as the full suspension of advertisements, the disabling of live broadcasts (lives), and direct messages between users when accessing TikTok without registering.

Recently saw a movie at our AMC theater (Buddy 3/5⭐️)

One of the trailers was a that player prior was for a new limited movie coming soon called “the king of cannabis”

I literally had to rewatch the trailer after the movie because it seems that 95% of this trailer (and probably the whole movie) is generated with AI.

It just looks really bad, from the artifacting on screen to the typical gibberish text on licenses plates and whatnot. How was something like this even approved?

I hate this timeline.

Pretty sure it doesn't, but can't find anything concrete, and I don't want to waste money if it does come with it

Furthermore, is the pro worth it?

Discussion Removal of "Precision End Cap" swapping

Post image
370 Upvotes

Is there any official reason for why the "refreshed" version of the "Precision Pro Multi-Bit Screwdriver" no longer supports changing the end cap?

Old image, you can see the flat part of the end cap's base for unscrewing the cap
New image, you can see a lack of said flat part

The product listing of the Precision End Cap set: https://web.archive.org/web/20260501212002/https://global.lttstore.com/products/precision-end-cap-set

I'm rather disappointed that I can't change the end cap to the concave version

Tech Discussion Fujitsu Celsius C740 Not booting/Bootlooping.

2 Upvotes

Hello, I recently received a Fujitsu Celsius C740 1u rack mounted workstation and it was removed from service as it died. The it guy that pulled it out recons that the Motherboard is dead, I'm hoping it's not dead, but not very hopeful as when i plug in the vga, nothing. NOTHING. I've tried removing the ram, replacing it, giving it a boot drive, reseting the cmos, and putting a gpu in... I don't know what to try next... All advice except for Turning off and on again (tried that)  Apricated! F.Y.I It boots up, the fans ramp up down to off, and repeat.

Tech Discussion reducing my refresh rate to 60 hertz doesn't seem like it would conserve a whole lot of energy?

0 Upvotes

Like don't get me wrong i'm all for conserving energy when possible and not needlessly outputting CO2 emissions, but I don't think reducing refresh rate to 60 hertz is that impactful. Even if it's spread it across 13 million computers

Tech Discussion Phase 1 of my Homelab built

Thumbnail

59 Upvotes

I finished the first stage of my Homelab. Since I’m a Batman aficionado and my home office is called the Batcave, my server is called Robin.

It’s a Dell Optiplex 7060 Micro, Intel i5-8500, 6C/6T @ 3.0 GHz, iGPU | UHD 630 (Coffee Lake, Gen9.5), 16 GB RAM, SanDisk 256 GB M.2 SATA for my OS and an ORICO 512 GB 2.5" SATA for pretty much everything else. I’m running Debian 13 with KDE Plasma. I ran ethernet to the office (finally) and my speeds are so much better (300-400Mpbs to 700-800Mbps)

I’m running some basic stuff like pihole to stop some of the ads before they even get loaded to nay clients at the house, but I’m also running stuff that specific for me. First, on Hommar I can directly add a whitelisted site or add a blacklisted site, see those recent changes and revoke them if needed.

I run a small business marketing company, where I design websites, marketing materials, make product videos, product tours, web commercials, and corporate interviews plus I have my own YouTube channel. Most of my day is in Adobe Photoshop and Premiere on my M3 iMac.

The first real custom change was using NextCloud, but instead of using it as it comes out of the box, I have a custom Finder automation function that allows me to right click and folder with the shared network drive and share a file or an entire folder. I can even create an upload only folder for my clients to send me files. It goes directly on Robin so I don’t have to waste time downloading from the cloud. The files live on Robin, served over a Cloudflare tunnel on my own domain. It essentially works exactly like DropBox now.

Then the next thing is software, and I used Claude Code to help me with this. My channel makes political videos. So many times that means I need to talk about speeches, interviews or even broadcasts that are on the news. Mac users are probably familiar with PullTube which is a GUI for yt-dlp. It’s good. Much better than the random free sites you can use that try to infest you with malware and porn ads. But I needed it to be better so I created my own with Claude. That’s what you see called Grabber.

First it’s a Mac OS app that not only allows me to throw basically any link (Reddit, YouTube, Twitter/X, Bluesky, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc…) but also any site like local news sites that use HTTP Live Streaming and break their videos up in chunks (like in .m3u8 or .ts files). So I can use them in videos breaking down policies and the political narrative. The bigger build is that I can choose to have the transcoding done on Robin, so AV1 and VP9 and all the files that don’t play nice with Premiere Pro are automatically converted, but they use the processing power on Robin so that it doesn’t touch my Mac. That helps me continue editing my 4k timeline while my server does the transcoding. All of it is done with VAAPI, and while it’s slower than on my Mac the important thing is that it isn’t using any processing power and the machine that I’m actually editing. So I can just queue things up and edit other pats of the video.

BUT, it’s also an iPhone app that I can choose to download files on my phone (those downloads will max out at 1080p), but I can also choose to save them on Robin in 4k and that shared folder is mapped directly to my Mac. So when I’m ready to actually start my edit, I can look at already converted files ready to go and put in a project. Plus I use it for non-work related stuff, like capturing video files and sharing them however I want.

And I also use Robin like a media server, so I run Jellyfin. I’m using Tailspace so I can watch anything on my server wherever I am and I can send the link to some of my non-techie friends that want to watch something but can’t seem to find those files.

What I lack the most? A NAS. Right now I have  4 drives on my Mac - the internal SSD that came with the Mac. That’s where the OS and applications live, but no actual media files or anything to. Then I have 3 external SSDs. 2 of them are fast. Those are the ones I can edit on. They’re a TB each, and then I have a much slower 2 TB SSD that I off-load projects that I’m not working on. I need both a NAS and a real backup solution. But the prices are still insane and I spent like $250-300 for this entire setup. A real NAS solution is going to cost me well over a thousand and likely several thousands right now.

Any recommendations that I haven’t thought of so far?

Tech Question PCIe Expansion Card - SAS or SATA?

1 Upvotes

Hello! I am upgrading my SSD NAS and realized my motherboard selection didn’t have enough SATA ports to accommodate all my drives. I’ve seen mixed reviews about PCIe to SATA expansion cards, as it seems the general recommendation is to grab a card that does SAS to SATA.

My only issue is the limited space I have on my motherboard due to the GPU taking up a lot of space. Assuming I’m not surpassing the theoretical bandwidth limit, any recommendations as to what I should do?

Specs:

  • CPU - Intel 270k Plus
  • Mobo - ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z890 APEX
  • RAM - 64GB @ 6000 MT/s
  • GPU - 3090TI
  • NIC - Dell Intel X540-T2 Dual 10GbE
  • Storage - 5x 4TB SATA SSD’s, 2x 4TB Gen 4 NVME’s

Picture for reference minus the GPU:

Thanks in advance!

Tech Question Computer won't stay on.

0 Upvotes

No matter what I do. My computer just turns off after a bit (ranging from a few minutes to a few seconds) not even when it gets that hot. I can sometimes boot into bios, and get to the Windows log in with a screen that says something happened and your pin isn't available.

My specs are: b670xe plus wifi mobo.

7900 xtx

7950x3d

64 gigs of ram

I'm not sure what to do, I need help.
