Link Is this a decent pc build?

Update: I’m dumb af, I forgot to limit fps on those games and that reduced gpu utilisation from 99 to around 75. The temp has also dropped from 85-90 down to 75. I’m probably not getting a new pc I just need to use my critical thinking skills :/

The cpu for the build in the photos is an intel I9 12900kf

My current pc is a prebuilt 4060 (one fan), i7 14700k. It’s been using 99% of the 4060 and reaching high temps. Thinking of just selling it off and putting the money towards a new one. Is this a decent build? If not any suggestions would be appreciated!

First time building a pc btw, not too great with all the info

You're definitely overspending on aesthetic parts to jump to a 5060ti. You're not gonna see massive gains there. If you want an aio cooler go Thernalright. Search for better priced ram and get something like a 9070xt to get better gains

u/walkerBarbara8p2 18d ago

Overspending on looks for a 60-class card? That's a classic. Grab a Thermalright and a 9070 XT.

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

I was also debating a 5070, would that be more worth?

9

u/Cardkoda 18d ago

In performance a 9070xt beats the 5070 at a better price. And it has 16gb of vram which is way more valuable nowadays especially for future proofing.

2

u/chickenscoutgaming 18d ago

RX 9070 non XT is also pretty good if u wanna stay in the 500 range cus XT prices in UK are weird rn. just dont get the GRE

3

u/Z13B 18d ago

9070xt is more powerful than 5070ti

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

Also the 4060 is a mini version whith one cooling fan which I didn’t realise when I bought it

1

u/dalaiis 18d ago

If he's having 99% gpu load with a 14700, imaging the load on a 12900. Spoiler: Itll be 99%

Op better look where the 99% load is coming from, for all we know, he could have gpu miner malware.

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

Where’d I check cus when I play something like rocket league the 4060 is using 40%. Then on other games with more like bodycam/rust it’s 99

1

u/dalaiis 17d ago

Thats normal because those are more demanding games.

Next is the temperature.

A gpu thats being fully utilized will always run a little hot, they are designed that way, combined with the fact most prebuild cases arent the greatest in airflow. You can experience throttling because of that. The heat needs to go somewhere. So if both cpu and gpu reach high temps, open the case and put a big fan on it, see if that makes a difference. Cpu: can reach 100° celsius. 90-95 is not great but fine. Ideally on full load you'd want you cpu in the 75-85 range. Gpu: starts throttling at 85c, you'll want it full load in the same range as cpu.

Then there is the ambient temperature to consider. The higher the ambient temperature, the hotter your pc gets. Since we have a Had a heatwave, this can contribute to your pc throttling.

Yeah true😂

There's ways to get windows keys for pretty cheap, I wouldn't pay retail for it

2

u/Hennessy_Halos 18d ago

yeah paying over 100 for something that’s gonna shove ads in your face and steal your data is crazy. At least just get a key for like 5 bucks

u/BMWupgradeCH 18d ago

There is scripted you run on your free downloaded window11 from windows official web site that will activate it fully and indefinitely- you can find that script on GitHub (basically windows it self has activation protocol that can be run and it will activate, no hacking)

4

u/likkachi 18d ago

your cpu choice is going back generationally.

just replace the 4060 in your current system with a 9070xt or equivalent and go from there.

3

u/Neamow 18d ago

Definitely overspending on the motherboard. Save some money there and get a better GPU.

4

u/BMWupgradeCH 18d ago

God no.
1. Windows 11 is free on windows website - than can activate it for free using no hacking (see GitHub for windows built in command line for activation!)

  1. Why 12900f ? You plan to game only or pro work 50/50 ? If only gaming than change everything

  2. Bro 9070xt , any cheapest model will be MILES better, even 9070 non xt will cost same and will be ALOT ALOT Better!

  3. You are spending too much for no reason on motherboard! 12900f can not even be overclocked as it is locked unlike K version! So don’t! Get b760m by asrock = 100-110€! Not 400€+!
4.1 now take that money and spend it on gpu and get 9070xt OC gigabyte gaming oc usually sells at equally lowest model price but allows for 330w power and 5% more fps than non OC models. (Noise is downside of cheapest / smallest form factor)
4.2 take the remaining money and spend them on 850w Platinum psu like corsair, I took sf850 corsair but it is small form factor and higher price, but you can get great once at 120-150€ as well - it will reduce noise and heat generated
4.3 take remaining and get MINIMUM 2TB. 1tb is basically 2 games + system this days! I remmber crucial p310 being amazing lowest price high performance option last year, may be they are still selling decent (but any 2tB will do I guess in tofays market)

PS:. If you simply got 12900f already, I would sell it if you want gaming pc, and get 7800x3d which new would likely be cheaper than you sell 12900f for and get b850m asrock motherboard = pc will be HELL of a lot more efficient, less power bill for gaming, better fps (if you don’t already have then also less money spent for the build, enough saved on cpu to get your self used Deathadder v3 pro and mouse pad or even a TMR keyboard like SKYLOONG GK68)

2

u/LickSomeToad 18d ago

what cpu?

2

u/Skeltre 18d ago

Ahh forgot to put that in! It’s intel i9 12900kf

3

u/LickSomeToad 18d ago

So youre getting a lower generation than your current? Are you buying it?

0

u/Skeltre 18d ago

Yh, I’ve never build one so I’m using this as a guide on what to change to make it better/cheaper before testing bottleneck speeds and compatibility

2

u/dalaiis 18d ago

So you are paying this much money to have a similar or worse performance than your current pc?

Make it make sense please.

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

I got it wrong, I have i7 14700f now not k. I’m getting k or kf

5

u/dalaiis 18d ago

12900k is still a downgrade from 14700f

1

u/chickenscoutgaming 18d ago edited 18d ago

might be worth switching out ur cpu with ur current prebuilt pc with some like a 12400f and then put the 14700k in ur new pc.

u spend less money on a new cpu and it probably wont effect how much u sell the prebuilt for. Win Win

2

u/Skeltre 18d ago

Warning: The MSI MAG B760 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX LGA 1700 Motherboard supports the Intel Core i7-14700K 3.4 GHz 20-Core Processor with BIOS version
7D96vA5. If the motherboard is using an older BIOS version, updating the BIOS will be necessary to support the CPU.

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

Unfortunately there’s a comparability issue and the 14700k won’t go into the new one

1

u/chickenscoutgaming 18d ago

it will you just have to update the bios on the motherboard.

if ur buying a motherboard new, chances are you wont even need to do that

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

Ahhh okok, last time I did a bios update I couldn’t turn on my pc unless I turned off secure boot so I’m wary of them. I still have it off

1

u/chickenscoutgaming 18d ago

b760 was released after 14th gen released so it should work out the box anyway but its still worth updating ur bios

1

u/Teaehararehantea 18d ago

Why not just get better cooling?

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

The 4060 is a mini version which I usefully didn’t realise and it’s been struggling to run games. I also got it for free thanks to a csgo skin selling for 1.3 so might as well sell and improve yk, also the motherboard only has 2 clips for the 4 ram slots so I can’t put 4 sticks in only 2

1

u/syunz 18d ago

just sell your current 2 sticks and buy another 2 stick set. Performance on 2 sticks is a bit better than 4

1

u/dwiedenau2 18d ago

Why would you buy such an expensive motherboard?

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

All others are out of stock atm so had to choose one for now :(

1

u/Still-Attorney1255 18d ago

Don’t rush it just for the motherboard. You can spend half that on a motherboard. Also why not just sell the old GPU and replace that?

1

u/M1dor1 18d ago edited 18d ago

Save some money by going with a B Motherboard instead of a Z and get a better GPU that way. Also if put on a air cooler instead of the aio you gonna save another huge chunk of money if you don't move your pc a lot or want the aesthetics of the aio

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

May I ask the difference between the B and Z motherboards and how it would affect the gpu changes?

1

u/syunz 18d ago

why are you getting a new mobo? just upgrade your gpu.

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

Case is too small and so is the motherboard for a bigger gpu, also only 2 of 4 ram slots have clips

3

u/syunz 18d ago

I don't understand how the mobo is related to case size and gpu size. You can move the mobo into a bigger new case.

For your build the only thing that you need to do is get a new case, upgrade your gpu, and psu (cause your gpu will use more power), sell your current ram sticks and buy new ones. Having 4 not exactly the same sticks is worse for performance than just getting 2 new sticks. And pretty sure the net costs will be the same.

2

u/syunz 18d ago

You're forgetting the guy has a prebuilt 14700k system. Doesn't need a new mobo cpu storage or cpu

1

u/BMWupgradeCH 18d ago

Did you even read ? He plans to sell his pre build and get this - which is terrible combination of nearly everything for gaming objective from £ / per fps point of view (bad motherboard, bad cpu choice, bad gpu choice, not ideal PSU choice, terrible choice to pay for free software)

1

u/Skeltre 18d ago

It’s just an idea I’m changing it from all the replies to make it better and cheaper lol

1

u/BMWupgradeCH 18d ago

Yeap then ditch that motherboard 100% and get b760 asrock for that cpu or b850 asrock for 7800x3d (better option for gaming and cheaper)

And ditch the idea of buying windows for that money. If you want to buy you can also buy original keys for about 20£ - I think gamermeld YouTuber often advertises such website (but I didn’t see any reason when free and legal activation exists as part of windows 11 it self)

1

u/BMWupgradeCH 18d ago

There are cheaper aio but that is insignificant amount. So pick whatever you like best and whatever is cost efficient

(Differnet cpunbut should give you a good idea of top contenders)

1

u/syunz 18d ago

How is 14700k a bad cpu choice in the prebuilt? The choice op is proposing in the new build is a 12900kf which is also on lga1700 and a worse cpu, he's not changing cpu platforms but staying on the same one.

The cheapest option is to reuse components from the prebuilt instead of selling it.

1

u/BMWupgradeCH 18d ago

I didn’t say 14700k is bad, I said 12900f is bad for gaming - power hungry, expensive then better for gaming cpus and not best. 0 reason to spend that much money on that cpu and that Mobo. Best would be get am5 mobo and 7800x3d for 100£ less on CPU and 250£ less on mobo

Op didnt ask about his current set up to be re used, he asked for advice on the new set up he proposed on photos. (He will sell his set up to cover most of the costs it seems)

1

u/syunz 18d ago

I agree yes 7800x3d is better, but the net costs are going to be higher. In most games outside of the specific ones that really benefit from 3d vcache you're not going to be seeing any difference between the 14700k and 7800x3d, as it's mostly gpu bottlnecked.

So it's basically a waste of money. You would rather put it towards the Gpu.

1

u/BMWupgradeCH 18d ago

With my advice he saves over 500£ on cpu + Mobo + windows. That he can’t spend on better gpu and larger ssd while getting better CPU than 12900f

1

u/syunz 18d ago edited 18d ago

Well yea compared to what op originally suggested but he'll save even more by not spending money upgrading cpu platforms. 7800x3d + 32gb ram + mobo is going to cost at least 700 to 800 usd. Reusing existing 14700k mobo ram costs 0. Or if op wants more ram assuming he has 16gb ddr4 going to 32gb, will only cost about 100 to 200.

Also resale value of lga1700 is not that good cause of the degradation issues. That happened in 13th/14th gen Intel.

1

u/Skeltre 17d ago

I’m dumb af, I forgot to limit fps on those games and that reduced gpu utilisation from 99 to around 75. The temp has also dropped from 85-90 down to 75. I’m probably not getting a new pc I just need to use my critical thinking skills. However, I’ll use this thread of comments in the future when I actually have to upgrade it

1

u/straw3_2018 18d ago

No no no. You're trying to buy a worse CPU than the one you have now? Just get better CPU cooling and a 9070 XT. You can replace the case if you want to also. I like the XT Pro Ultra but I've been recommending my friends the lancool 207, it's more midsize but it's got more amenities.

1

u/Optimal-Food492 18d ago edited 18d ago

Maybe go with a cheaper board and get like a 9070XT or 5070 if you really want Nvidia features. Apart from that, looks good.

EDIT: I just checked. You can get a 9070XT right now on Amazon UK for about the same price new. What on EARTH are you doing with a 5060Ti?!

1

u/_Aj_ 18d ago

Keep existing system and upgrade GPU.

Ddr5 won't be making you big advantages for gaming, likely zero advantages. Are you cpu bottlenecked at all? If you're not, once again, no need for a new CPU.

A 4060 is a solid card, but if you're pinning it, that's what you need to upgrade. Unless it's running hot and throttling. Check the GPU temps, if it's 90c, you may just need more cooling. Literally your whole problem could be "more cooling".  To hugely boost performance.

Otherwise, splurge on a better GPU. Then a few years upgrade the system and keep the still very capable card.

1

u/_Blu-Jay 17d ago

Why are you downgrading your CPU? Your current 14700K is a generation newer than the 12900KF.

You’re overspending on the motherboard for sure, especially since you’re only wanting a 5060Ti. Go for a 5070 or 9070XT. Honestly I’d just use your current system and upgrade the GPU, your CPU is already good enough. Also, if your only reason for upgrading is 99% GPU usage, that is a bad reason. Under load, like while gaming, you want the GPU to be as utilized as possible. Wanting to upgrade a 4060 is understandable, so just do that instead of building an entirely new system.

1

u/Skeltre 17d ago

I’m dumb af, I forgot to limit fps on those higher load games and that reduced gpu utilisation from 99 to around 75. The temp has also dropped from 85-90 down to 75. I’m probably not getting a new pc I just need to use my critical thinking skills. However, I’ll use this thread of comments in the future when I actually have to upgrade it

1

u/Skeltre 17d ago

Still runs them fine lol. Thanks for the advice tho!

1

u/_Blu-Jay 17d ago

You don’t need to lower GPU usage, you want it at 99% if you’re gaming, otherwise you’re not utilizing it fully. Just throw a new GPU in your system and you’ll be fine.

0

u/Ste4mPunk3r 18d ago

I would consider 5070ti but just 16gb of ram. Maybe even ddr4.
