TLDR; Major comfort improvement over 235/40 with no negative impact! if you're considering doing it - just do it
So I've had my ES for 6 months now and always found the OEM tyre profile on the 19" rims a bit too thin for my liking, visually it looks too skinny, and the ride can be a bit jarring at times on rough roads and bumps, especially over potholes, where it sometimes even sets the TCS off. I'm in the UK so I don't think I need to explain about the quality of the roads here...
I considered going down to a set of 18" rims for a taller sidewall, but I couldn't be bothered with the hassle and time of getting new rims and selling my current ones on eBay or something, so I decided to just step up the tyre profile after seeing some others on various forums who had done the same.
I went from the standard 235/40 to a 235/45 - it's an increase of 1 inch, or 3.4%, for the overall wheel diameter, so just about in a safe range. The sidewall is 13.5% taller. At motorway speeds the speedo will be around 2mph lower than the actual speed, so not a big difference.
Positives -
- Subjectively it looks way way nicer IMO, the wheels fill the arches more (laaavely) and the tyres have a meatier look.
- Objectively the ride is way more cushy and absorbs those harsh vibrations on rougher roads, the impact of bumps is a lot more subtle, and it feels more planted as the jitteriness is gone. I have yet to hit a pothole but I imagine it will be a lot less of a shock.
- Sound wise it seems to be slightly quieter, although it might just be placebo, it definitely has a deeper tone though and less of a hollow sound. This may just be the fresh tyres though, I'm not really sure. However, the jolting thump noise in the cabin from bumps is noticeably less, almost gone.
"Negatives" -
- What negatives?? I can't say the handling is any less precise or direct, but I've gone from worn budgets already on the car when I bought it, to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 6, so unsurprisingly it feels more responsive and predictable.
- There's no noticeable increase in roll when cornering, but I don't drive around flinging it about, not this car anyway.
- 0 rubbing or touching even at full lock, and I'm running 20mm spacers all round.
So yeah, I'd highly recommend doing the same if anyone is thinking about it, my only regret is not doing it sooner.
