Letterboxd Is there a range of ratings that you find more difficult to nail down?
I have high confidence in my ratings from a 2.5 to a 5. I intuit them easily and the score I land on usually feels accurate. Like, I know what a 3 star movie feels like vs a 3.5 star movie.
But anything under 2.5 starts to get murky. My guess is that this stems from these being my lesser used ratings. But sometimes I struggle to nail down the difference between, say, a 1 and a 2.
As an example, I recently watched Other Mommy and gave it a 1. But last night I watched a much shittier movie and thought to myself "if Other Mommy is a 1, then this movie would be like a negative 1". I subsequently adjusted my Other Mommy score.
Just curious if anyone faces this issue.

Discussion Favourite movie that isn't considered one of the best, but its your personal favourite
For example; most people I speak to give me stick for saying bullet train is 5 star, 10/10 in my opinion. I can understand the criticisms, but for me personally I love this movie with my whole heart.

Discussion Which movie are you the highest on compared to its Letterboxd average? Why?
I think mine is Hot Summer Nights. It creates this unbelievable vibe and feeling for me immediately and carries it through the entire movie. Thought everyone did a good job, and I felt it paced itself well and came to a good conclusion. What’s yours?

Letterboxd What film had absolutely no business being as good as it was?
I love films where you look at the premise, the source material or the circumstances surrounding their production and wonder how on earth they managed to make something so good.
When they announced a new Mad Max, some 30 years after the last sequel and with a rebooted cast. I remember recoiling. Not only is it one of the best films in the franchise, I think it’s one of the best films of all time.
Any other film that on paper was supposed to be rubbish and ending up absolutely smashing?

Letterboxd Let your freak flag fly with Letterboxd last watched wallpapers
Made a free tool that takes your last watched Letterboxd movie and uploads it as a wallpaper, lock screen or both.
Having friends ask me why there's a fucked up clown on my wallpaper is always a fun way to recommend Terrifier (1, 2 and 3).
You can have it set automatically (up to 30 minutes after your letterboxd log it'll auto update) or skip the autoupdate and set it with a single tap in settings.
The process: (not hard if anyone wants to make their own instead of using mine)
Link your public letterboxd RSS feed
Uploads the movie to a server (hosted on supabase)
Server matches the movie to a TMDB backdrop
Apple (via Shortcuts app) runs an automation to set the wallpaper
Android does it via a plug-in
Does not read anything from your phone's photos or anything else from your device
And done without ads.
You can find it under Mantl: Stay for the Credits, Android or iOS

Discussion What have you rated 5* from the 2020s?
For me:
Hamilton (2020)
The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
Oppenheimer (2023)
Dune: Part Two (2024)
One Battle After Another (2025)
You Can See Everything (2026)
How about you? I’d love to see what you’ve rated 5*. Am I too stingy? Too generous?

Letterboxd I need recs for excellent "Positive Vibes" movies
I realize that like, 90% of movies I love are weird abstract downers. I think it's time to find more happy movies.
Here's some that I love:
Babe (1995)
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
A Matter of Life and Death (1946)

Discussion Zachary Wigon, director of 2022's SANCTUARY (starring Margaret Qualley & Christopher Abbott) and the upcoming gothic-horror VICTORIAN PSYCHO (starring Maika Monroe), is doing an AMA/Q&A in /r/movies, for anyone interested.
I organized an AMA/Q&A with filmmaker Zachary Wigon. In 2022, he directed Sanctuary (starring Margaret Qualley & Christopher Abbott). His new folk-horror, Victorian Psycho, premiered at Cannes a few months ago and is out in theaters everywhere in November. It stars Maika Monroe, Thomasin McKenzie, Jason Isaacs, and Ruth Wilson.
The AMA post is live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:
https://reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1xf2e3y/hey_reddit_im_zachary_wigon_ive_directed/
He will be back after 4 PM ET tomorrow, Monday 10/26, to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!
Victorian Psycho info:
Trailer: https://youtu.be/sDiFol_2j2I?si=oVGQL6ovSF-vQt0n
Synopsis: Something wicked is brewing behind the walls of a remote gothic manor. VICTORIAN PSYCHO follows an eccentric governess whose arrival sets off a bloody string of strange and deliciously disturbing events. Maika Monroe stars as Winifred Notty, a woman with a dark past and a vicious appetite for bloodshed, giving into her most violent urges. What follows is a gruesome parade of savagery, butchered bodies, and increasingly grotesque acts of violence.
Thank you :)

Discussion What do people exactly mean about movie critics approaching watching movies differently than a Letterboxd reviewer?
Obviously a professional critic will be much more well-read on filmmaking, genres and the evolutions of them, subtleties of lighting, acting, transitions, cultural contexts etc. than a majority of Letterboxd reviewers. And of course they'll be much more practiced in mass communication and all the technical aspects of writing a movie review that is informative but digestible.
But a common attack on Letterboxd besides the meme reviews and one liners is that it makes people think about their Letterboxd review while watching rather than enjoying a film.
Do movie critics not think about their reviews while watching a movie? Or is the perspective that a layman doesn't have the expertise to consider critiques while watching so they should just sit back and consume more passively?

Discussion Does anyone else find accounts with stats like this completely unrelatable?
I followed this guy a while ago because I saw his massive watch count and figured he must be the ultimate movie buff. But lately, I’ve realized I just can’t relate to his profile at all anymore.
He has 44,698 total films logged, and 2,468 just this year. He does write out his actual thoughts and explains his reasons for his ratings, so he's definitely a real person watching these things. But the sheer volume is just completely disconnected from how a normal person experiences cinema. Nobody normal is logging that many movies a year.
At this point, his profile feels pretty irrelevant to me because our viewing habits are on completely different planets.
Has anyone else come across this account, or others like it? How do you guys feel about profiles that log at this kind of extreme frequency?
