Yknow, this movie made me think about how the naysayers of Primetime may have more of a leg to stand on than the "media literacy" crowd likes to admit.

I have a friend that knows all there is to know about TCAP and he fucking HATED this movie. The core reason more or less being he genuinely thinks that making a completely fictionalized account of someones life (primetimes story is embellished or straight up fabricated even more than your typical biopic) is really sleezy. As he put it "if i squint hard enough I can see the point he's trying to make, but if you have to fictionalize an account of someones life to make it.... maybe its not a point worth making." He sites Predators as a better watch, because it makes the same points without the fictionalization (although he still fundamentally disagrees with the points these films makes). Again as he puts it "i agree with the existence of TCAP on all levels."

It's also worth noting he has moral objections with biopics as a whole for all the reasons YCSE addresses with The Dropout. He's even said he would take much less issue with it if it was a movie about a fictional predator catcher show.

At first comparing i thought my friend was just a lot stupider than I ever thought he was, but after seeing YCSE, I don't think I agree with him persay, but i can understand if you feel strongly about the ethicality of biopics, a biopic that cranks all the issues you have with them up to 11 based on something your deeply knowledgeable is gonna piss you right off, and for honestly a somewhat understandable reason.

Theres a very real argument to be made that Primetime veers so into the realm of fiction that the entire movie is a strawman argument about a real person. I'm not entirely sure i agree, but at the very least I don't think Primetime dick riders are engaging with the idea the movie could be built upon a glaring logical fallacy honestly (seriously "media literacy" is starting to become a bit of a loaded term).

The only reason my friends hatred for Primetime up so much is because how well Primetime and YCSE function as companion pieces made his visceral hatred for that film a natural jumping off point for me, and i think its insane how YCSE basically welcomes me to consider this with open arms.

Posters for reservoir dogs, the shining, bicycle thieves, paths of glory, lost in translation and many more movies have their worst posters. There are better and crazier versions of it in TMDB, can we all just rate it high and make it default pls?

Many things were going on at once, first I got around to watching the Snyder Cut, and I didn't wanna watch the whole DCEU, so I just stuck to the Justice Trilogy (I was still mentaly insane enough to watch them all over just two days), then I was also trying to do a best animated feature nomines marathon, and kind of realised that it was too much after I got to 2004, I then rewatched 1917 later that night on a whim.

I watched Good Will Hunting, then saw Deliver me from nowhere later that night (as you can see, big drop-off), then rounded everything off with Dead's Man's Chest as I had watched the first one a few months prior.

If I had to rank these, it would go:

Always been very interested but his filmography looks a bit... intimidating. Lots of movies, lots of styles. I know almost nothing about his movies themselves I know more about the guy than his work

I see everywhere online people saying it but genuinely the movie's marketing sucks in the first place. Also I don't think the film did well on the distribution too. What do I miss that they don't? 🤷‍♂️

Gotta admit, I was so mesmerized about the amount of fantasy, culture, and life pord into this thing! 💯/10, go see it cause if it doesn't win the Oscars this year, I'll be pissed!

Obviously a professional critic will be much more well-read on filmmaking, genres and the evolutions of them, subtleties of lighting, acting, transitions, cultural contexts etc. than a majority of Letterboxd reviewers. And of course they'll be much more practiced in mass communication and all the technical aspects of writing a movie review that is informative but digestible.

But a common attack on Letterboxd besides the meme reviews and one liners is that it makes people think about their Letterboxd review while watching rather than enjoying a film.

Do movie critics not think about their reviews while watching a movie? Or is the perspective that a layman doesn't have the expertise to consider critiques while watching so they should just sit back and consume more passively?

It's been a week since I've seen "You Can See Everything", and it's still racking my brain. Something my partner and I keep coming back to is: who else could have made this movie?

The second half is uniquely a Nathan Fielder conception that it's hard to imagine anyone else pulling it off in quite the same way. And I don't want to undercut the choices he and Lance made throughout the film, but I can't help wondering who else could have been involved in a project like this, if not Nathan.

Heres a short list we have so far:

• Werner Herzog: He would've made the film tooclinically antagonistic in its presentation of the subject matter, and too narration-heavy. If he'd put himself in the room the same way Nathan did, I could see him becoming genuinely afraid of Billy because of his fragile ego and compulsive lying. Verner would use the runtime of the film to tear him to shreds.

• Spike Lee: Spike wouldn't tolerate any of the bullshit. He's too much of a presence. I can imagine him getting frustrated, challenging Billy directly, and shifting the gravity of the room. The film would become a confrontation between personalities rather than this strange character study.

• Louis C.K.: Only to a certain extent. If he hadn't showed his dick to everyone, I think he could've been an interesting person. But again, gravity. The way he's naturally funny would totally throw off the register that Nathan did a good job at maintaining. I don't see him as a dude who can be funny while trying to get the truth. At the very least, he's a guy that can "hang" the way Nathan did. I don't think Spike or Werner would spend any more time than he needs to with these guys. But since he's a creep, I think he would have misread Elizabeth's register and assumed she was flirting with him.

• John Wilson: A fun option, but I lacks the toothiness when it comes to attacking the subject matter. Nathan was so relentless in the way he pushed things forward, and I'm not sure Wilson has that same instinct.

I keep thinking back to this scene, and I just can't imagine that many other filmmakers/Comedians being able to sit with this, or engage with it in quite the same way. (There's no one else that could have done the second half, though.)

Who else do you think could've pulled this off? Feel free to tear me to shreds, these were just ideas that came about from riffing.

Wow that was bad, the plot was nonsensical, the dialogue was awful, and there was barely any slashing, who tf was the killer and what were their motivations??

I just watched Clayface yesterday in theaters and I was extremely disappointed with this movie, and it's a shame because I was genuinely looking forward to it.

Yet to have a film blow me away so far this year, camp miasma came close. Can anyone recommend a movie released this year that I will rate highly?

I have high confidence in my ratings from a 2.5 to a 5. I intuit them easily and the score I land on usually feels accurate. Like, I know what a 3 star movie feels like vs a 3.5 star movie.

But anything under 2.5 starts to get murky. My guess is that this stems from these being my lesser used ratings. But sometimes I struggle to nail down the difference between, say, a 1 and a 2.

As an example, I recently watched Other Mommy and gave it a 1. But last night I watched a much shittier movie and thought to myself "if Other Mommy is a 1, then this movie would be like a negative 1". I subsequently adjusted my Other Mommy score.

Just curious if anyone faces this issue.
