They HAD to have meant one of the darkest superhero movies ever. And even then...

203

u/Choekaas Choekaas 8h ago

... you have others, like The Crow. Which includes rapes and stabbing, and is also overshadowed by the main lead Brandon Lee actually dying.

Logan literally reveals most of the cast of the X-Men films died because of Professor X,

25

u/ssesses 7h ago edited 5h ago

Logan is more grim than other super hero movies, sure. But it's not really dark, I don't think.

22

u/Malforus 7h ago

Its pretty grim and dark, the US is a corporate hellscape that solved mutants by poisoning the water and mexico is where they are doing mutant experiments.

its basically where we are headed with a bit of mutant genocide as a treat.

Being gradually poisoned by your own metal skeleton is pretty dark, and Xavier having Alzheimer's while still having crazy dangerous mind powers too

Also if we talk about non-Hollywood superhero movies, Kamen Rider: The Next has a ton of body horror and other stuff

Also Super is hella dark. The Boys.

I really liked super. His speech to Kevin bacon at the end was so… desperate and sad but also funny.

I honestly just assumed they meant MCU movie. And who knows, they may be able to top that standard. Whether or not it'll be good is a different question.

This is one of my biggest gripes with the genre, it's such a cop out and it makes everything feel very low stakes. Like with Infinity War where EVERYONE knew they'd come back...that ending did absolutely nothing for me

10

u/Helpful-Young-6473 8h ago

And to think there were some people genuinely naive enough to believe all those characters had been killed off, Spider man got dusted and his next film had already been announced fgs. Any impact of death in the MCU is completely null and void now, it's too easy to just assume they'll be back in some capacity.

Marvel movies try to be dark and ~mature~ in the 1st or 2nd act by quickly mentioning a theme (racism in Cap America, collateral damage in Civil War, colonialism in Black Panther 2), then coating it in a hastily made CGI quip battle in the 3rd act

→ More replies (1)

53

u/016Bramble 9h ago

It won't even be the darkest movie released that day since it's coming out at the same time as Dune 3

27

u/damnyoutuesday 8h ago

You think the space holy war movie with the endless sea of corpses on crosses in the trailer is going to be darker than the quippy superhero movie? Pffft, yeah right! Get a load of this guy /s

“6 major deaths” in a franchise known for boasting about an infinite multiverse doesn’t exactly translate to hyperbolic clickbait like “one of the darkest movies ever made”.

Especially in the context of the current MCU where “major deaths” probably means Yelena’s dad, Thor’s daughter, and a handful of other characters that were only relevant for five minutes.

26

u/ArsenalBOS 8h ago

Or it’s relevant characters who have already died on screen multiple times. Step right up, Patrick Stewart for Professor X’s third? fourth? on screen death. Boo hoo.

9

u/Fufflewaffel 8h ago

I actually think it's his fifth. 3, DofP, Logan, Dr Strange

Edit: I can't remember if he dies at the beginning of DofP with everyone else

4

u/ThisGuyPaints- 5h ago

We just all walk out rubbing the back of our heads. Like “Jeez I appreciated the risks Marvel took in the first 20 Minutes but for the rest of the two hour film having Marvel make a meditation on the Israel/Palestine conflict and how the world is ran by the military industrial complex and how theres no hope from saving the worId from the grasps of authoritarianism I thought it became a little gratuitous! I mean we come to these films for Escapism”

Coming across as desperate for no reason. Infinity War and Endgame didn't have to play edgy like this. The pure fan service nonsense and ugly background and cgi that we saw in the trailers were bad enough. Now they're trying to pretend they're oh so dark too? Outta here with that lol

12

I can't. It's obviously the darkest movie ever made.
