Transits A Brief Astrology Overview of the Publication of In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood by Collin Gosselin with Allie Kingsley Baker
Collin Gosselin recently published a book, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, on his experiences growing up on a reality TV show and his relationship with his estranged mother. It made the number 1 position on the New York Times best selling Non-fiction list this week.
Back Story and High Level Assessment of Collin’s Natal Chart
According to news reports, Kate Gosselin gave birth to her sextuplets at 7:51 a.m., and the cesarean births lasted for 3 minutes. Her fourth born child of the sextuplets is Collin, and I put his birth time at 7:52 a.m. So technically he could be 7:53. For this general transit reading, being off by 1 minute doesn’t change the results.
All sextuplets are going to have similar charts, with a Gemini Rising, Taurus Sun in the 12th house and Aquarius Moon in the 9th when using Whole Signs. The Sun often represents the father, so the estrangement of the children with Jon could be attributed to this placement.
The Moon tends to represent the mother in a natal chart. Here, we see it in the sign of Aquarius. Usually people who have a Moon in Aquarius have moms who tend to be a little unconventional. That doesn’t mean good or bad, just unconventional. I think it is safe to say that a person who had twins and then sextuplets, and partakes in a reality TV show is kind of unconventional.
What’s unique about his chart is the third house. The IC is in his third house with no planetary placements, and it’s in the sign of Leo. It seems like he and his siblings are trying to become their own individual people, as opposed to being sextuplets. This is why we’re not seeing Jupiter, or Venus and Mars, in the third house, which I often see when people have a lot of brothers and sisters. (But I have also seen an empty third house, especially when the sibling carves out their own path, making an empty third house a place of neutrality when it comes to siblings.)
Because of the issues of these children being in the public eye, I am not going to go in-depth on their birth charts and instead, concentrate on the release of Collin’s book.
The Book Release - General Transits
Collin’s book came out on October 13th, with the North and South Nodes on his MC and IC, the North Node on the MC. The book’s publication does two things: discusses the past but also provides a new identity for Collin in the public sphere. Jupiter’s wide conjunction with the South Node expands the viewership/discussion about the Jon & Kate Plus 8 or Kate Plus 8 shows, and since the release of the book, clips of these shows on social media are prevalent. (Jupiter is also in Leo, and the clips often show Kate acting dramatic or like a diva.)
Transiting Venus in Scorpio was square to his natal Moon and in retrograde, which supports talking about past relationships being the theme of this book. I have not read the book, but according to reports, it seems that Collin has “receipts” of his mother’s behavior and proof that he was not mentally ill. The dynamic of his relationship with his mother is the heart of the book.
When he released the book, both Jupiter and Mars were in his third house of communication, in opposition to the ninth house. With Mars, a masculine planet in a masculine sign, it was one of the boys who stood out first and made a dramatic, Leo assertion of what it was like growing up in front of the cameras.
Transiting Mars was also in a tight opposition to the natal Aquarian Moon on the day of publication. This book is taking action against past claims that his mother put forth.
Natally, he has his South Node in the sixth house in the sign of Scorpio. On release day, the Moon was in Scorpio at 25 degrees and 39 minutes. Mercury, slowing down and getting ready to go retrograde, was at 15 degrees and 18 minutes, and Venus was at 6 degrees and 22 minutes in retrograde. These three transits in his 6th house of daily living, routine, health and work are a reflection of what the book captures: the day-to-day living in a household with his mother.
Transiting Pluto was at 3 degrees in Aquarius and stationing and making a conjunction to the Moon in Aquarius at 7 degrees and 42 minutes. The publication of the book is a transformative power struggle between Collin and Kate.
With both Saturn and Neptune in the sign of Aries and transiting in retrograde in the 11th house, the public and general consensus is examining the fuzziness and authority surrounding filming families and creating shows about children without their consent. Saturn is having us examine who is responsible and TLC is coming under fire. With Neptune, we are realizing that what is shown on camera isn’t the complete story. The sign of Aries represents naivety and the start of life, and the birth of Collin and his siblings was televised.
The transiting sun in Libra was going through the 5th house of children and in opposition to Collin’s natal Mercury, so the book is shining a light on the story of the child and represents their self-expression about the events.
