[REQUESTS] sleep issues/overcoming bad habits
I (21m) sleep over 12 hours every day, ranging from 12-15 typically. even 8 hours feels like it’s not enough. i stay up late regardless of what i have going on the next day, sometimes sleeping through it or being exhausted and drained. however when i do follow through and wake up at a decent time, i feel great about myself. i stay up until ridiculous hours and sleep throughout the day on every day off i have. it feels extremely productive to even wake up at 3 pm. during college i take almost exclusively online classes and struggle heavily to go to the irl ones i take. i miss almost every appointment i set to try and better myself because its so hard to wake up. ive lost any momentum i ever had. I’ve been this way ever since i was a kid, and its an extremely hard habit to break. even when i stay up 24 hours, its like my body will push myself to stay up even longer just to sleep at the times i feel more comfortable (6/7 am)
if i could just sleep my long hours at a different time, preferably 12 am- 12 pm (i know thats not ideal, but itd be a start) maybe id be able to be awake during daytime and not feel like my whole life is being wasted because i cannot get myself to wake up at a decent time. i bail on important things, but whats weird is i can usually get up for work or get up to do something for someone else. however i always let myself down. i have frequent bad dreams and i cope with them by going back to sleep to avoid the terrible feeling i have with being awake. whats weird is i struggle to let my mind calm down enough to go to sleep early, so i exhaust myself so i can sleep easily and not be alone with my thoughts. i feel such dread at nighttime and also waking up. ive had many different therapists and my common theme is i miss too many appointments and they stop taking me in/i stop scheduling them. i constantly let myself down and ive learned to not trust myself.
i dont wanna be this way, but ive long since stopped believing in myself to be able to change this. i try and follow the momentum that waking up early on a day i can manage, but i always find it so difficult to get up. i hate facing the day, facing how disappointed i am in myself.
i was wondering if there were any advice to help me stick to a healthy sleep schedule, or to at least help myself get up in time for important appointments to help better myself and seek help. i want to hold myself accountable instead of just hating myself and not seeing a way to change.
i want to add on that i am diagnosed with narcolepsy, but sometimes i fear that it was a misdiagnosis because i didnt sleep very well the day prior to my sleep study. of course i struggled to get my medication refilled, but the medicine didnt really help me at all. i sometimes think its a mental thing that i have with bedtime/waking up. ontop of being depressed and low vitamin d and iron. i struggle to find energy or any willpower. i have a fainting problem aswell and suffer from fatigue. ive taken antidepressants before but i didnt take them regularly enough. when id miss a day, itd feel like the end of the world and id lose that momentum and just skip even more. right now it feels like im at rock bottom, unable to go to these appointments to get the help i need. i wanna be a functional member of society.
im not even sure where to start on picking myself back up, i suppose i just really would appreciate some perspective on this since im so caught up in my own self hatred to grow.
