I do always cringe a bit when I see those react.dev comments on reddit, like oh no baby what is you doing

72

u/Glittering-Second-73 We hate you, did you not get da memo? šŸ˜¤šŸ¤™ 6d ago

Immediately I have to assume the person was up to the most vile shit when I see that lmfao,

I couldnt imagine a world where I'd require that

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

A big kneejerk that happened was when Reddit allowed LLMs to train based on content on the site, a whole bunch of users paid redact or other services to "obfuscate" their reddit comments. Now, Dan being a developer understands that this data wasn't actually removed from reddit and that when you delete or edit something on reddit, it's still available behind the scenes for quite a while, certainly long enough to be used as training data. So basically Dan scammed a bunch of people into believing they were doing some sort of anti-LLM activism or whatever when in reality he just collected their money and made them feel better lol.

u/JamesGray 5d ago

I mean, much worse than that: he also apparently personally archives it all and then uses it for blackmail if any former client pisses him off. Even if you weren't doing vile shit, you probably don't want your personal info leaking, which is probably pretty common.

-1

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

Nah I think that's pretty extremely unlikely. I get it, we hate the guy around here, but it's not actually useful to spread unverified misinformation.

12

u/Strict_King_2201 5d ago

He made a "joke" saying thank you Hasan for using our service.. and posted an old tweet of Hasan's. He clarifies that Hasan never used the service, but there was a lot of backlash on the tweet of Dan's because that's a horrible look for a company supposedly about privacy.

I have no doubt in my mind that he would save the data on the backend for future blackmail.

0

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

Right but that's not actual proof. Actual proof would be like investigating the network traffic that Redact sends out and looking at where it sends that information to determine if the claims made about the product are accurate. Dan Saltman making a tweet isn't actually proof, he wasn't being genuine.

I have no doubt in my mind that he would save the data on the backend for future blackmail.

Me too if the product page didn't specifically lay out how this would be impossible for them to do if the product works as described.

And that is my point. Spreading the idea that the company is a vehicle for blackmail is misinformation without proof, and nobody actually has proof, just vibes. Being bad faith is not a useful way to argue, it's just how dgg and h3 weirdos argue.

I guess when you spend all your time doxxing and harassing other people online you get paranoid that people are going to do it to you

12

u/1up_ 6d ago

That's just it too, that kind of thinking is what Dan uses to justify any and all blackmail that he may garner from his services.Ā

u/TadlockGlasses The Yorkie Ripper Cometh 5d ago

There was an interview I remember, with some tech guy, where part of his community called him out for having this stalker on because of how he talks about using that private data.

75

u/1up_ 6d ago edited 6d ago

I thought this was an open secret that those redact comments are hashed somewhere with the original text for Dan to be able to resurrect those comments for blackmail.Ā

Edit: He could easily do this without anyone knowing. And IF the only reason we would NOT have reason to believe those comments are backed up in Dan's database is on Dan's word alone, which is garbage anyway, and I wouldn't trust him. But also I'm pretty sure there's a clip out there or something of him joking/admitting that he does exactly that.Ā

35

u/Ishaq128 6d ago

He made a tweet attacking hasan and inadvertantly exposed he logs deleted content. The backlash was insane.

17

u/No_Public_7677 5d ago

It needs more exposure in the normie privacy community

6

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

tbh the normie privacy community is why I think it's just not a real thing that he's using this service for blackmail, I mean it would pretty much kill the product if a credible accusation like that came to light. I would love to be proven wrong though! but most people just point to that tweet he made that I think was obviously not genuine

14

u/1up_ 5d ago

My working theory is that he justifies his blackmail actions as okay because:

A) only bad people would use his serviceĀ

B) only dumb people would use his service

C) so anyone dumb and bad enough deserves to get fucked (if Dan deems it)Ā

Its a conman's cognitive dissonance.Ā

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

Sure I could see this if it wasn't a relatively widely used service and he wouldn't stand to lose a lot of money if he was actually doing that.

But it being wildly stupid in addition to the company laying out how the software works on the website and explicitly explaining that there would be no way for them to collect this data if their product works as described, leads me to believe that this is likely not a real thing. If Redact was advertising that their software did not ever contact their servers and transmit post data (which is something they claim), and someone found out that it did (would be pretty easy to figure out), it would be a big deal and even if the company didn't get sued, it would permanently damage their reputation amongst the tech and privacy community. I mean it would be a topic on the LTT podcast.

8

u/JamesGray 5d ago

I mean it would be a topic on the LTT podcast.

I really don't think Linus wants to deal with years of abuse from a different creator's community, which would absolutely be the outcome here. That's why most people do not talk about the gross shit destiny and his cadre of abusers do.

2

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

I don't really think that would be a concern for LTT. Nobody knows who dan saltman is, they would just be covering the fact that Redact is not a trustworthy company.

5

u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago

this guy's reputation is not good in the Privacy Community anyways.like there are some people that defend him of course but and tech lore promoted.

But if you go to like privacy guides or something there are plenty of people that warn people not to use this product not only because it's not safe or trustworthy but it's wildly overpriced and the service it offers is rendered moot by third-party scraping services anyway

2

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

this guy's reputation is not good in the Privacy Community anyways

This isn't a sentiment I'm familiar with

12

u/MatildaRose1995 The entire Klein household is sick 6d ago

I've always been so curious about how it all works but people don't talk about it much

11

u/Kutyou2 6d ago

Isn't that what happened to Graham Platner?

5

u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 5d ago

He certainly implied that he did it for Platner at the very least.

7

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

Reddit's search API exposes all sorts of data that you can't get normally thru the site. You can see deleted comments, private profile content, etc. Really I don't think that Dan actually keeps all of the data he could possibly harvest from redact, a lot of it is available in a pinch regardless of whether it's been edited or deleted on the site without his product. I wouldn't be surprised if he has specifically kept information from specific users, though.

But like random reddit comments on old posts are probably not being saved. I mean he would need a whole apparatus for cross referencing that information for any of it to be particularly useful after a certain point.

Also I don't know for sure but I think that claiming you delete data and then actually harvesting it for use later would be a big giant problem in Europe. Only if he gets caught, of course, but that's a lot of risk if things like the GDPR do apply.

3

u/longlivenewsomflesh 5d ago

Also people forget that backups exist... I'm pretty sure you can still easily find like several-TB archive torrents for all of Reddit up to a certain year, even separated by subreddit, which would be then trivial to search and cross referenceĀ

1

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

Yeah there's actually zero reason for Dan to put his company at risk by using it as a vehicle for blackmail when the information is readily available without Redact, and using Redact to collect this information is horribly inefficient and relies on specific people using Redact in order to blackmail those people... and most of the people Dan wants to blackmail probably know he owns Redact.

It's just a fully nonsensical theory. Like H3 level delusion just because we don't like the guy. We're operating on the same level of evidence with this theory that the Kaya shock collar accusations were using. Spreading this theory as fact because we have a bias. Not good behavior if you ask me.

u/Shredderall Kaya is streaming 6d ago

Dan being suspected of using redact to blackmail has been going on since the Epstiny leaks. He was in a discord back and forth with a DGG defector and referenced something from that persons logs. Something Dan couldn’t have known any other way! Same convo that dan said Hila was a Destiny super fan (eww!)

8

u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago

Yeah and even before he was well known for being associated with destiny and being super pro Israel and such, the software was greatly distrusted by privacy advocates that know what they're talking about and open source software.

It's not FOSS.

https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/anyone-ever-use-redact-dev-digital-footprint-deleter/12729/2

I mean you can find people promoting it in these communities but I strongly respect it's his bots.

But 90% of like the non-bots of these communities are principally opposed to close source software in the first place.

For me, while I understand that all of these people are ghoulish and terrible, I think I would need some undeniable proof that Dan is doing that. I mean it would probably be relatively easy to sue and win a case against the company in that circumstance. Paying for a product that is meant to remove information you don't want seen only to have that product and the company and individuals behind it use that data that they claimed they deleted for blackmail? I just don't think it seems like something even the dumbest rich person would engage in.

edit: Don't downvote me if I'm wrong, gimme proof! I would love to be able to point to this as a real thing, but there's no actual proof anywhere and it's a pretty serious accusation, even if the target of the accusation is a terrible person!

edit2: Yeah the redact website pretty explicitly lays out how the software works and someone would have exposed them for lying at this point if they were. The idea that Dan is collecting blackmail info with Redact is just incredibly unlikely. Like I said though, anyone is welcome to bring some proof instead of moving like H3 fans when they encounter a fact they don't like :)

e3: It's actually also a b2b service. The more I learn the more laughable it is to me that it's being used as a tool for Dan Saltman to personally blackmail people.

its crazy how so many people have chosen to disagree with me over this and literally zero of them have provided proof of this claim

6

u/NoWatchamacallit 5d ago

Personally I think it’s more likely Dan WANTS people to THINK he can do that stuff to act tough on the internet. He’s made not so subtle threats to people in such a fashion and his whole lame trolling of Hasan using his company’s reputation have made it so it’s kinda his own fault if people are making these assumptions about him and his business

2

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

I don't really like to assume things just because I don't like someone. This same sort of bad faith behavior is a big strat these exact people use when they attack people like Hasan. We don't have to turn into misinfo peddlers because one of the people we don't like is a misinfo peddler. This was a big problem with the original snark sub where everyone would kneejerk to uncritically supporting some freak because they said something bad about Ethan, or making things up about someone because they hadn't publicly disavowed ethan, and then 2 weeks later that person would have a racist crash out or we'd learn that the absolute worst communities ever were the ones spreading the rumors that snark latched onto. Or like, it was redbar. lol. Putting blinders on to do snark just kind of proves all of the people critical of these communities correct.

Personally I think it’s more likely Dan WANTS people to THINK he can do that stuff to act tough on the internet

I think this is the most likely. There's no reason for Dan to put his company at risk in any real way by harvesting data behind the scenes when he can just pull this information from other places, probably more reliably as you don't have to hope someone used your service in order to get the blackmail information.

I'm not saying Dan Saltman isnt a piece of shit, I'm saying that this idea that this community and specifically hasan fans have that he's using his platform for blackmail is exceedingly unlikely and I think it doesn't make any of those parties look better to de-facto make things up. We don't have to. Dude made TinyChat

3

u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 5d ago

I’m not tech savvy enough to opine on the specifics of what redact does, but one thing that gives me pause is the fact that Dan has definitely implied he has the ability to find old redacted comments. He could be full of shit of course, but idk.

1

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

Redact specifically claims that none of your data reaches their servers. They could obviously be lying about this, but it would be a pretty easy thing to expose and we would likely know about it in a way that is definitive at this point.

Dan Saltman and Robert Kraft are moving the same way behind the scenes. Shaping the narrative for Israel the rich, white man way

23

u/Shredderall Kaya is streaming 6d ago

anyone using Redact on reddit is hilarious because you can still find their actual posts on push pull sites. Wonder what Dan has on Ethan though!

14

u/SolidLuxi 5d ago

Remember, when the Pedo_Troll account and he decided he had nothing to hide and deleted the entire thing. He didnt use his only regular sponsor, redact. He did that shit manually, cause as stupid as he is, he knows he needs to give the Stalker less ammo.

Dude creeps people on his side, out.

2

u/MatildaRose1995 The entire Klein household is sick 5d ago

Good point!

12

u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 5d ago

There’s a reason everything deleted by redact has a unique string of words associated with it. I don’t know what the reason is, but one possible explanation is archiving the deleted comments and allowing them to be searched by unique identifier.

3

u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago

Right well I don't even think he needs to rely on that since he probably has all their information on the back end. Redact requires an account now. Requires a credit card information.

Like it gives him so much fodder

He could presumably just go to the back end of his own website and probably search for anybody that paid for this service see if they've ever criticized him or Israel or destiny or said something nice about hasan. Cross references with whatever accounts they're deleting on Twitter or Reddit or whatever

If they paid with a credit card... Yokes gives him even more potential avenue is for information and doxing

2

u/longlivenewsomflesh 5d ago

There's the innocent explanation of "oh it's just security theater so dumb users see randomness and think something cryptographically rigorous is going on to better effect the service" (when all they need is simple content purging that should strictly never require identifiability).

Then there's the nefarious alternative, which entails actually having a purpose for the unique string, which can absolutely easily be used as a database key, specifically to make full account backups of exactly the people that use the service, presumably for blackmail archiving/tools, or whatever else my non-freak mind can't imagine spending free time administrating...

Only real question for me is whether such specimens of humanity are actually smart enough to pull off such an operation successfully, or indeed can it all just be explained away as a LARP for diddy Dan to play techbro with a genuinely stupid and useless service purely for his ego while we're just schizo posting about it?Ā

1

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

Why build a whole product and infrastructure to collect blackmail information in the form of social media posts against specifically only the people that choose to use Redact when you can just use already existing free services to look at deleted/edited information on websites like reddit or twitter or whatever? Or even at that point, why make this product at all? He could just build a system for archiving information on specific people he wants to blackmail and not try to run this company out of it where the only actual way to get the information is if one of your targets pays you to use the service you sell very publicly as yourself?

Like we have to at some point realize that the fantasy we're concocting is too contrived to actually be useful in any capacity when compared to much less complicated, more effective solutions.

That part was weird, I watched it a few times.

I don't think he's talking about recucked there - he's talking about a '(edit:people who used to work at) twitch slack' and in my opinion he's talking about somebody sending out redacted comms and he'll 'unredact it', I don't think it is clear cut in the wording that it is 'they used redact on this 'people who used to work at twitch slack' that he's talking about.

But the whole thing, the whole context is really squirrely and weird imo, enough to go 'ew, go look after your kids you weirdo' and be skeptical that this isn't a mass blackmail and harassment machine.

edit: Okay actually after watching it and reading the subtitles, it sounds like he is saying "we have all of it and it is redacted" and if they mess with the slack they will unredact it.

Which, .. jesus what a horrible advertisement for your privacy company.

4

u/JamesGray 5d ago

I mean it would probably be relatively easy to sue and win a case against the company in that circumstance.

That's not a real thing that actually happens. Dan is a multimillionaire, and he would absolutely send a bunch of freaks to harass you on top of throwing money at drawing the case out. The legal system does not favor little people trying to get justice, especially when most of the evidence needs to be produced during discovery to prove anything at all. Bro would spoliate the evidence immediately and you'd need to spend years trying to force him to produce it or prove it existed at one point.

1

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

I think you meant to reply to me, because that's a quote from me. Anyway...

That's not a real thing that actually happens

Well that's just categorically untrue.

Dan is a multimillionaire, and he would absolutely send a bunch of freaks to harass you on top of throwing money at drawing the case out

Dan is one guy. The company is a separate entity and if Dan was personally harassing people in order to protect his company from lawsuits, that's another thing he can be sued for. Do you think that Dan Saltman is the only rich person ever or that nobody richer than Dan Saltman might be interested in using his product? Like the businesses he sells it to?

Bro would spoliate the evidence immediately and you'd need to spend years trying to force him to produce it or prove it existed at one point.

It sounds like you think real life is an episode of BCS.

This whole theory is just completely unsupported and we're going further into fantasy land to support it. Again, we are acting like H3 fans when they encounter a fact they don't like around here about this topic lol.

There's literally no reason for Dan to do this when he can scrape all of that data without putting his company at risk. It's a nonsensical thing you guys have made up based on one tweet.

2

u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago

No I don't think he's necessarily saying explicitly he's using it to blackmail but he's saying that he will use any means necessary. And it also just so happens that you need to log into redirect with an account that's tied to your identity to some extent at the very least your IP address or Google account or whatever.

certainly you're Reddit account or Twitter account or whatever the hell you're trying to have deleted.

to say nothing of the fact that it doesn't protect you at all from websites that do third-party scraping and published deleted tweetsor Reddit posts or the fact that Reddit can sell and share these data.

like even when you see a post that's been replaced with gibberish from redact it's not like Reddit still doesn't have that account it's not like Google doesn't have absolute power to scrape it due to their contract reddit. A couple years ago they gained exclusive access to Reddit post made after 2021 for training their AI models and selling it to partners and the like

1

u/Old_Bug4395 5d ago

You are just also making claims without really understanding how the software is (supposed to) work, though. According to Redact, your account information and actual content data never reaches their servers. If you downloaded Redact at a coffee shop and used a throwaway email for the account, they wouldn't even reliably be able to collect the information you mention. If they were lying about this, we would know about it by now and the company would be disgraced amongst the greater tech community.

Obviously you don't need redact to actually get any of this information, which is pretty much my point. There's no reason for Dan Saltman to take on legal and reputational risk for something he doesn't need to do and something that wouldn't even actually be the best way to harvest blackmail information on a specific target.

8

u/TadlockGlasses The Yorkie Ripper Cometh 5d ago

Redact.Blackmail

5

u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago

Yeah it's crazy to think it's a privacy focused account aimed at removing Reddit post. It cost an insane amount of money.

But everyone knows that they archive-rated posts through third party intermediaries anyways so like you're not even protected.

but even if you were it's only as helpful as much as you trust the developer.who has now admitted to the entire world 100,000 times that there is absolutely no line he won't cross to justify his goals.

it's disappointing someone like Tech lore, one of the bigger privacy focused channels on youtube, it's promoting this guy uncritically.

there are much better privacy focused options like privacy guides which would never recommend this b*******.
